Nyika Media Club is the professional body of journalists working both in the mainstream and corporate media in the northern region of Malawi. It does not serve political interests and all its responsibilities are profession-driven. Members of Nyika Media Club work to improve the information flow particularly on issues that relentlessly rock society - Climate Change, HIV and Aids, politics, electio
ns, etc. The objectives of the Club, among others, are:
• Provide a forum for journalists to interact in a social atmosphere with people from all sectors of society;
• Offer a platform to members of society to discuss, through a wider audience such as debates, various issues affecting them and the country;
• Encourage dialogue and debate on current affairs relating to social, economic and political issues;
• Assist the public on issues of advocacy. The National Initiative for Civic Education Public Trust (NICE Trust) is an independent institution solely owned by Malawians that provides civic and voter education to Malawians that is relevant, effective, efficient and sustainable in a professional and non-partisan manner and it has a country-wide structure. NICE Trust’s overall objective is to contribute towards the promotion of democracy and good governance through civic and voter education in order to achieve poverty reduction in Malawi. The purpose of NICE Trust is to enhance the ability of Malawian citizens (including the disadvantaged groups) to participate in public life, including democratic decision-making processes, to empower them to exercise their democratic rights and responsibilities at the national, district and community levels. NICE Trust believes that the media play a crucial role in informing the electorate at various stages of the electoral process. The change that our country embraced in 1993 from one-party rule to multiparty democracy, was to a greater extent facilitated by the media. Considering the power of media in the change process, NICE Trust feels an electoral process without the meaningful involvement of the media is incomplete, hence partnering with Nyika Media Club in civic education.
