Women at the one week Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM) fistula camp have hailed the organisation for organizing the camp.

Martha Shariff, mother of four from Manase Blantyre said she has been suffering from Fistula from 2005 making her ashamed to go mingle with fellow women.

“There are some women who feel shy to seek medical attention and end upon losing their marriages," said Shariff.

Shariff has therefore called upon other women with similar condition to come forward and get assisted adding that some are suffering in silence and losing their marriage because of the treatable condition.

In his remarks, IHAM Executive Director, Hajj Dyton has said that so far there has been a good turnout of women but was quick to encourage those that are yet to turn out for the repairs to use this opportunity and get assisted.

“We have a team of local and international medical Doctors at the camp.We have so far assisted 13 women from Tuesday and we are hopeful that more women will turn up as the camp is still ongoing," Dayton said.

Daniel Chilomo who is the Spokesperson for John Chilembwe District Hospital, said that the camp has helped the hospital reduce the number of patients on their waiting list as well as learn expertise from the foreign doctors.

“I want to advise the treated women to publicize their assistance, so as to help remove fear in their fellow women with the condition so that they can have firsthand information of the procedure and get treated,” Chilomo stated.

At least 17 students have been killed while 13 more suffered serious burn injuries after a fire in a boarding school dormitory in central Kenya, police say.

The death toll could rise, police warned on Friday, following the disaster at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri county, as the survivors are being treated in hospitals.

The primary school caters to some 800 pupils, aged between five and 12.

The cause of the fire on Thursday night was being investigated, police spokeswoman Resila Onyango said, adding that “necessary action” would be taken.

“The bodies recovered at the scene were burnt beyond recognition,” Onyango told the AFP news agency.

President William Ruto called the news “devastating” and said action would be taken against those responsible.

“I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this horrific incident. Those responsible will be held to account,” he wrote on the social media platform X.

School fires are common in Kenyan boarding schools, where many students stay because parents believe it gives them more time to study and precludes long commutes.

In 2016, nine students were killed by a fire at a girls’ high school in the Kibera neighbourhood of Nairobi.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, has said that Israel is purchasing advertisements on Google to discredit the agency and prevent users from donating.

In a post on X on Saturday, Lazzarini stated that Israel’s actions are part of a broader campaign to undermine and defame UNRWA.

“As part of its campaign to undermine & discredit UNRWA, the Government of Israel has been buying ads on Google to block users from giving donations to the Agency and undertake a defamation campaign”, Lazzarini said in a post on the social media platform X.

He emphasized that these actions not only damage the reputation of UNRWA but, more critically, endanger the lives of the agency’s staff. Lazzarini called for an immediate halt to these deliberate efforts to spread misinformation and urged for an investigation into the matter. He pointed out that misinformation continues to be weaponized in the ongoing offensive on Gaza.
