TUMAINI FESTIVAL RISKS CANCELLATION

By Harold Kapindu

One of the country's biggest arts and cultural festivals, Tumaini, risks cancellation due to lack of funding.

In an interview, Tumaini Festival founder, Menes La Plume, said Tumaini is a free festival which depends on funding.

"Tumaini is a free festival, and we rely on donations from well-wishers to make it happen. With no funding this year, we are at risk of canceling the event. Therefore, we request that all well-wishers in the corporate and NGO sectors join us and help make this year's festival possible," he said.

He also revealed that the online crowd funding campaign has not been successful.

"For the first time since the inception of the Tumaini Festival in 2014, we are not successful with our annual Crowdfunding Campaign. We did our best, but the campaign did not reach its target.

"We know that this year has been more difficult financially for everyone; we can't be grateful enough to the 49 friends who contributed to support the festival; we really appreciate your love!

"Unfortunately, the campaign did not reach its target; therefore, we will not be able to receive the money that has been contributed, as the Kickstarter system is all or nothing" Menes La Plume added.

STAKEHOLDERS CALLED TO PRIORITIZE ADULT EDUCATION

By Esmy Mwahimba

The Deputy Director for Community Development responsible for Adult Literacy and Education Services in the Ministry of Gender, Charles Mkunga, has called upon various key stakeholders to prioritize Adult Learning and Education- ALE programs in the country.

According to Mkunga, people who do not know how to read and write are left behind with the development of this country, saying modernity and literacy need to be prioritized (ALE) in order to improve performance.

Speaking in an interview, Mkunga said Government through ALE has been experiencing inadequate supply of resources hence the need for partners and civil society organization's intervention to help government in ensuring that adult literacy services are provided to individuals beyond doubt.

He said the demand for people to attain adult learning education is high but currently Malawi has 9 thousand adult literacy classes in the country that include 180 participants every year. However, the population census of 2018 reveals that close to 2.1 million of people in Malawi are adult literate.

Commenting on the matter, Board Chair of Civil Society Education- Coalition - CSEC, Limbani Sapato, said there is need for political will especially adequate funding in order to implement the strategy of adult learning education in the country.

He said that politicians from the top need to prioritize adult learning education and provide not less than 3% of education budget so that so that the priority in the strategy can be implemented.

MALAWI READY TO CATCH UP', AS PRESIDENT CHAKWERA DEMANDS INCLUSIVITY AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday, September 22, 2022 took to the podium to address the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the United States, with a call to the UN body not “leave anyone behind” as espoused in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Today, over three and a half years after that commitment was made, smaller nations and younger democracies around the world already feel like this was an empty promise. Today, not only do smaller nations and younger democracies like Malawi still feel left behind, but feel much farther behind than before,” said President Chakwera.

He noted that for instance, Climate Change is a global problem that will never be solved unless all nations solve it together, yet months after Malawi and its SDG gains were set backwards by two tropical storms in quick succession, “we have been left behind”.

“We all know that pandemics are a global problem that will never be solved unless all nations solve it together, yet in the rollout of vaccines and application of travel restriction, we have been left behind.

“We all know that regional insecurity is a global problem that will never be solved unless all nations solve it together, yet in the participation of UN Security Council decisions that affect us, we have been left behind.

“We all know that food shortage is a global problem that will never be solved until all nations solve it together, yet in the allocation of international facilities for agro-based and debt-distressed economies, we have been left behind,” said President Chakwera.

The President said to correct the situation, it is imperative to concentrate the UN’s support on the most vulnerable who are lagging behind so that they can catch up.

“Malawi stands ready to do its part in using any new support we get to make up for lost ground and catch up,” President Chakwera declared, explaining that on addressing the current global food crisis, Malawi is ready to catch up, having just joined the Feed the Future initiative, giving us access to new financing in the next few years to use Malawi’s vast arable land and large volumes of fresh water to develop mega farms that will feed the world and lift millions of our farmers out of subsistence living.

“On climate change mitigation and adaptation, Malawi is ready to catch up. So with COP27 around the corner in Sharm-El-Sheikh, we call for action on the pledges already made, so that Malawi and other Least Developed Countries can build resilience to climate-change induced events like floods, drought, pests, and cyclones, all projected to become more frequent and more severe,” he said.

President Chakwera informed members that although Malawi and other Least Developed Countries contribute the least to climate change, we are committed to the global climate agenda. Malawi’s own ambition is to cut carbon emissions by half before the year 2040, and so we call for support towards our efforts to transition to clean and green energy.

“On dealing with the evolving challenge of COVID-19, Malawi is again ready to catch up,” he said, noting that crucial to this effort is access to vaccines, and your support to our efforts to catch up in this area will strengthen our vaccine delivery systems in general.

He added that the critical need for Malawi is strengthening health systems more broadly to build resilience against future pandemics, which calls for investments in health infrastructure and research.

*DEBT DISTRESS*

President Chakwera told the gathering that most vulnerable LDCs are suffering due to the unsustainable debt levels and distress they bear. He called for an immediate solution to the problem, which he equated to slavery.

“As leaders of generations past worked together to end old forms of slavery, so we too must work together to end this new form.

“Recently, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund called on the world’s major lenders to show leadership by relieving vulnerable countries of the debts that are shackling them, because even loans that were given and received in good faith have become unsustainable in the recent and current climate of relentless and unforeseen external shocks. I therefore join her in reiterating that call,” said the President, commending the People’s Republic of China “for leading by example by fulfilling the pledge it made at last year’s Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to forgive interest free loans owed by 17 African countries”.

*EQUALITY FOR ALL MEMBERS*

President Chakwera then called for equality for all UUN member states, small or large.
“US President [Joe] Biden’s recent call for this UN Family to defend the rights of smaller nations as equals of larger ones must not only be applauded. It must be uploaded.

“As African member states, we do not wish to gather here next year with no progress made on the African Union’s Ezulwini consensus, which demands two permanent seats with veto power and five nonpermanent seats for Africa. So following the strong signal of support from the US Government, we expect to see this matter on its way to the United Nations Security Council to be tabled, heard, and settled,” said the Malawi Head of State.

In conclusion, President Chakwera expressed his country’s deepest condolences to the British Royal Family and the government and people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, “who was laid to rest on the eve of this Assembly’s High-Level Debate week”.

MINISTRY TO ENGAGE MISA, MEDIA COUNCIL ON CLOSURE OF STATIONS

By Chimwemwe Topola

Director of Information, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, has said MACRA is mandated by the Iaw to revoke media licenses but the Ministry has not yet been communicated to on the closure of media houses.

According to Mtumodzi, MACRA is not in the wrong as it is a must for the media houses to pay license fees.

Mtumodzi further told the committee that every media house is aware that it is supposed to pay the license fees but the revocation of licenses will further promote unemployment rate in the country.

He therefore said that the Ministry will engage the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi as well as Media Council of Malawi to map the way forward on the matter.

Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information and Communication met with the Ministry of Information to be informedon their stand as regards to the closure of some media houses due to non-compliant licensees who failed to adhere to applicable licence conditions and relevant laws.

The meeting took place today at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe.

SULOM REINTRODUCES MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

By Elliot Tandan

Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has now ended a dry spell of the Man of the Match award in the country's elite league. This comes after signing an agreement with Farmers Organization Limited, as a new sponsor.

Farmers Organization Limited will pump in K4.5 Million. The sponsorship will run up to the end of the 2022 TNM Super League season, and player of the match will be pocketing K30,000, a miniature, and other products of the company.

In an interview with Ndithu, Farmers Organization Limited National Sales and Marketing Manager, Ronald Chilumpha, said their drive to come and partner with SULOM is to help in the development of sport and showing appreciation to Malawian farmers through their teams' players. The organization has been operating in the country for over 40 years.

On his part, SULOM President, Tiya Somba Banda, hailed the organization for the sponsorship, saying that this will help to bring stiff competition in the league, among the players.

Banda assured the organization that they will work with them to promote their respective products bearing in mind that 90% of farmers love football.

WE NEED MORE LOCAL SONGS IN CLUBS, SAYS BLACK JAK

By Harold Kapindu

Versatile entertainer, Black Jak, says In-house Media is set to launch "Malawi Night" club tour aimed at promoting the culture of playing local content in clubs and gatherings.

The first "Malawi Night" dubbed summer edition will take place on 24 September at Chez Ntemba in Blantyre.

In-house Media founder and Director, Black Jak, real name Fatsani Kalonda, said foreign music has taken over Malawi music industry hence the need to bring back local content.

"It's sad that people prefer foreign to local music. We want to encourage DJs to start playing Malawian music and embracing Malawian culture. We also want to create a space where people can appreciate local food and drinks," said the seemingly disappointed Black Jak.

He revealed that four popular DJs will be touring clubs in the country where local music will be played for four hours.

"It's not easy to just turn things around. We will therefore start with four hours and see what and where we can improve," he added.

He also said the tour will give a platform to Best New Artists.

Various local drinks and foods will be available on sale.

IS DOC THE FIRST MUSICIAN ON NEWSPAPER FRONT PAGE?

By Harold Kapindu

Last week, Sunday Times reported that in early 2017, musician Patience Namadingo also known as Doc launched a 40-day campaign to raise money for the children’s cancer ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech).

According to the investigative report, banks, individuals and various quarters supported the cause, making pledges and delivering actual donations.

By end of May that year, Namadingo apparently announced he had raised K15 million.

And he told The Daily Times of June 2, 2017 that he would be handing over the money to Qech that week.

Today, 5 years later, no one knows where that money was delivered, the paper alleged.

Reacting to the story, Namadingo posted on Facebook, "The fight against cancer is important, the Doc is passionate about it." The Doc speaks live at 18hrs today".

He then went live on Facebook at the said time to explain his side of the story.

The Namadingo story appeared on the paper's front page promoting reaction from another high profile musician, Tay Grin, who stated that no Musician has made it to the front page.

He suggested that it seems people only qualify to be on front page when they are politicians.

"Today a record has been broken we all know who was on the front page. But does it mean when artists do good the print puts them somewhere inside. When they think we have done bad they can now offer us the front page? Things should change. When artists do good. Give em the front row too," Tay Grin posted on social media.

However, it appears either Tay Grin didn't do his research or simply wanted to discredit print media.

"Nde Mwati Artist Woyamba Kukhala Pa Front Page Ya Newspaper Ku Malawi Kuno Ndi Ndani?? Hello FACT Checker," Black Jak responded.

Billy Kaunda's story with the headline "Kaunda tops Entertainers" and Black Jak's story with the headline "MEC opens voter registration today" have been on newspaper front pages before.

We understand that you are comfortable with your social media audience unlike in the past when musicians used to use print media for publicity.

However, print media will always be there and one day you will need it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II FASHION LEGACY

By Harold Kapindu

Malawi and the rest of the world on Monday, 19 September bid farewell to the longest reigning monarch in British history, and Australia's, New Zealand as well as Canada’s head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday, 8 September 2022.

Among other things, Queen Elizabeth II, whose real name was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, was a fashion icon whose influence in the fashion industry cannot be overemphasized.

Although her style had changed from teen to old age, she had been consistent in her wardrobe.

In her early years as a princess, Time Magazine recently reported that the young Elizabeth favored clean and polished silhouettes with a nipped-in waist, a style that reflected the time, especially for war-torn and post-war England.

At 96 years old, she was still stylish and had great taste of fashion.

Firstly, the late mornarch loved umbrellas that were made to match her outfits. The Queen apparently owned approximately 100 umbrellas in every color of the rainbow which were custom made by her dresser, Angela Kelly and Fulton, to coordinate with her outfits.

Unlike most rich and famous public figures, Queen Elizabeth II worn the same brand of shoes for decades until her death. She wore Anello & Davide shoe brand and had an entire team of people who made each pair to her measurements.

Queen Elizabeth II also dressed in bright colors to stand out. She would seek attention just like any Malawian woman in society.

She also always carried a special handbag. She favored the aptly named “Royale” ($3,205), the “Turandot” ($3,215) and the “Traviata” ($2,830) from luxury handbag brand Launer, which has carried a royal warrant since 1968, according to Page Six Style.

The late Queen Elizabeth II was rarely seen in trousers unlike other younger royals namely Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. It has been reported that she was photographed wearing trousers in public fewer than 10 times in the last 70.

Finally, she loved a good headscarf. According to Page Six Style, a silk scarf was Queen Elizabeth’s version of a casual hat, and she frequently wore one at more laid-back occasions like the Royal Windsor Horse Show, or while riding horses and driving her beloved Land Rover while off-duty.

From dresses, hats, handbags, shoes, headscarfs, choice of bright colors to not being a fan of trousers, Queen Elizabeth II truly defined her legacy in fashion.

Her visit in 1979 influenced and changed fashion in Malawi.

AN INSIDE PIECE OF THE INFLUENCE OF PETER TOSH ON LUCKY DUBE

Like many writers, some of the great musicians all have stories to tell over what or who influenced them to reach the highest peak of their music career. It will be recalled that one day, Burning Spear met Bob Marley on his way to a farm and he (Burning Spear) spoke to him about his musical ambitions. Bob Marley then directed Burning Spear to go to "Studio One".

That was the beginning of Burning Spear's music career. With a good heart, he gave credit to Bob Marley in his song "As It Is" taken from the album "Calling Rastafari". He sings, "l started singing in the late sixties, told about Studio One by Bob Marley".

Out of the original three founding members of The Wailers, Lucky Dube adored Peter Tosh. There must have been some reasons. Lucky was a victim of Apartheid. During the Apartheid era, two white men with bull dogs were bragging about how strong and wild the dogs were. Unfortunately, Lucky appeared there, at the worst possible time and the owners let go of the dogs on him. Lucky Dube narrated this fate in one of his interviews.

While some world leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, were supporting Apartheid, concerned Peter Tosh was probably the first musician to play the tune "Apartheid", expressing his anger against the injustice and suffering of South Africans, before other musicians followed suit. This is a significant example why Lucky Dube liked Peter Tosh, the most. Reggae music is not only to be listened to, but also to be studied.

LUCKY DUBE HONOURED PETER TOSH

Now let's find out the love Lucky Dube had for Peter Tosh. In one of Peter's songs, "Glass House," Peter sang, "Harm no man , Let no man harm you, Do unto others, As they would do to you, And to every Baldhead Respect the rastaman 'cause he's the only man left in creation. The latter, "Respect the rastaman 'cause he's the only man left in creation", is where l want to lay my emphasis on.

In 1989, Lucky released the remarkable album titled "Prisoner". In the track "Reggae Strong", Lucky honoured and paid tribute to Peter unnoticed by singing, "Killing the prophets of reggae, Destroying the prophets of reggae, But somebody said, To all the Baldheads, Respect the rastaman 'cause he's the only one left in Jah creation." (He referred to Peter Tosh here).

During one of his interviews, Lucky confirmed his likeness to Peter and said; "Peter Tosh was a great singer, so l feel honoured if people say l sing like him". He similarly honoured Bob Marley too, while singing the song "Victims", released in 1993, saying "Bob Marley said, How long shall they kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look but little did he know that eventually the enemy will stand aside and look while we slash and kill our own brothers".

"Reggae in the bathroom, Reggae in the bedroom, Reggae everywhere, Reggae in jail, Reggae in Church, Everybody likes it".
