United Democratic Front Party (UDF) leader Lilian Patel on April 2 2023, has donated assorted items to 77 families whose houses were damaged by the Cyclone Fleedy in Zomba District.

Speaking during the donation at Chikanda Evacuation Center Patel said as UDF party they decided to help Malawi government in its efforts of providing food and other stuff to the victims of cyclone Freddy as one way of curbing the problem the victims are facing.

"This donation is to assist the victims in terms of the needs for their daily lives and we believe that this will help them for the few coming days " Patel said.

Receiving the donation councilor of the Likangala ward Munira Chitseko said the donation has come at the right time as the victims were lacking such items as they have received.

Munira once asked the UDF leader that when she goes back to the Parliament she might ask the Government to subsidize Iron sheets, Cement and Cement blocks for many poor Malawians to afford to buy and build their solid houses.

One of the beneficiaries Zione Kamanga thanked UDF leadership for the coming to help them with food and other items and has. Appealed to other parties and organizations to do as what UDF has done.

The Donated items included Maize floor, 1kg sugar, 2 bottles of Grycerin, Soap and Salt were worth 2 million kwacha.

Colleagues,
Be informed that Mfera Health Center under Chikwawa caught fire today around 13:45 soon after electricity came back on. The fire started from OPD dispensary section and caught fire to the whole building. The dispensary,
TB Lab (microscopy), HMIS, OPD, and general stores have all been affected. J2 backup, server and some supplies like chlorine have all been burnt.

Maternity equipment was evacuated in time. So far OPD, Cholera CTU and maternity services have been disrupted.

Police were with us on site and ESCOM managed to disconnect all electrical links to other building.

No injuries recorded.

We have temporarily suspended services as we plan for the actual assessments and re-strategise how to resume services from the remaining blocks and equipment.

Updates on cyclone Fleedy.

According to Gomezan Nyasulu Zomba District disaster officer said by 14th March 2023, only 333 families have been affected by the cyclone Fleedy in Zomba central constituency.

Nyusalu added that out of those 333 families only 24 have been taken to Likanga and Chambo evacuation centers respectively.

Nyasulu further thanked Zomba Youth Group for donating bedsheets, blankets and assorted food staff to the victims at the evacuation centers.

*Lilongwe Police engages Nkhoma community on its police unit*
Lilongwe Police Station and its Lay Visitors Panel and its lower formation Nathenje Police Post have asked the community in Traditional Authority Mazengera to provide a toilet at Nkhoma Police Unit and to have the unit painted as a temporary measure while waiting to have a new police unit within the area.

Lilongwe Police Station officer Mrs Eunice Mwamkili Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) made the appeal yesterday Wednesday March 8 2023 during an interface held at Nkhoma CCAP Synod Headquarters which drew together traditional and political leaders, the police and the Synod secretariat.

Mwamkili was accompanied by her Nathenje counterpart Mr Beston Mmangisa ACP, Lay Visitors Panel chairperson Mr Chancy Lutere and the panel member Reverend Alfred Mphote.

The Lilongwe Police Station officer disclosed that the station will soon deploy more officers to Nkhoma to beef up manpower.

On their part, the Synod's General Secretary (GS) Reverend Vasco Kachipapa and Senior Group Village Head Kanyumbu appealed with the police to send them competent and sober minded officers, saying drunk officers are not welcome there.

The GS went on saying that the Synod, the Member of Parliament and the traditional leaders will soon set up a taskforce to look into modalities on how they can build a new police formation.

On their part, Lutere and Mphote said the meeting was a follow-up and a catalyst to ensure the wellbeing of suspects as provided for both in the Republican Constitution and the Police Act.

The meeting was moderated by Nathenje Police Post's Community Policing Coordinator Sub Inspector Wilson Saiwala.

*Three die, 11 sustain injuries in Dowa road accident*

Three people have died while eleven others have sustained various degrees of injuries following a road accident which happened in Dowa on Monday afternoon.

The accident which happened at Lumbadzi Bridge along Salima-Lilongwe road involved a motor vehicle registration number LL1066 Nissan Vannet , driven by Steve Matandika whose full particulars not yet established.

It is reported that on the particular afternoon, the driver Steve Matandika was driving from the direction of Salima going towards Lilongwe with 14 passengers on board.

Upon reaching rumble surfaces near Lumbadzi Bridge, the driver lost control of the vehicle and deviated into the river where it rested in the waters.

Due to the impact, all the 14 passengers sustained various injuries while three female passengers were confirmed dead at Chankhungu Health Centre in Dowa District due to severe head injuries.

Two deceased persons are Magret Msenga, 46, of Kalulu Village in Traditional Authority Chimutu and Egifa Mnjolo, 35, of Mwenda Village in Traditional Authority Malili, all from Lilongwe while the third deceased person is yet to be identified.

Among the victims, five passengers with serious injuries have been referred to Dowa District Hospital while six other passengers with minor injuries have been treated at Chankhungu Health Centre as out-patients.

The driver is currently at large and the motor vehicle has been extensively damaged.

Police in Chitipa have arrested 20 Ethiopians for allegedly entering into the country illegally and a Malawian for aiding them.

The Malawian has been identified as Patrick Mshani, aged 36 of Ishalikira village from the area of Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa district.

The twenty were arrested at Lwaka hills in Kafola village in the district.

Following information from well-wishers, police officers went to lwaka hills and searched the immigrants from the hills and managed to arrest 20 and one Malawian from where they were hiding.

The suspects will appear in court soon to answer case of illegal entry while the Malawian will answer case of aiding illegal immigrants.

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate's Court has convicted and sentenced a 27-year-old man to 4 years imprisonment with hard labour for theft by servant.

The court through state prosecutor Inspector Christopher Daluni heard that the convict Treffer Nkhoma committed the offence during the month of November 2022 at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa where he stole money amounting to K6,200,000.00 belonging to Global Distributors Limited.

Prosecutor Inspector Daluni further told the court that the convict stole the money and used it for betting in different premier bet places where he had been loosing.

Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of theft by servant contrary to Section 286 of the Penal Code.

And in his submission, state prosecutor Inspector Daluni prayed for a stiff sentence to the offender, saying the money lost is huge hence a deterrent sentence to send as a caution to other would-be offenders.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Robert Botha concurred with the state's submission and sentenced him to 4 years imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict, Treffer Nkhoma comes from Chinguwo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.

Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody 30 year-old Medium Nyirongo for allegedly killing a 4-year-old biological Daughter.

In a statement Citizen Radio Station have seen state that Nyirongo sent his two children to his mother in Mzimba after separation with his wife and the children were sent back to their father on January 23, 2023.

Nyirongo after receiving them during the night of the same day, he took them to a bush near Kalumba stream where he murdered Jane by suffocating her, and left the 2 year-old son in the bush.

The boy was found on January 27 by Rosemary Jasi who was going to her garden and the remains of Jane was found on February 11, 2023.

Nyirongo will appear in court soon to answer the charge of murder.

A 60-year-old man has drowned in Nyenyedi River on February 11, 2023 at Mbawera Village.

The man is indentified as Benito Kapasule of Kaporo Village, Traditional Authority Mbawera, Thyolo District.

At about 0600 hours, Kapasule (now deceased) in company of his wife went for gardening where they crossed Nyenyedi River.

After finishing work in the garden, the two started off but that particular time it was raining. As they attempted to cross the river, both were swept off by running water.
The wife managed to climb on a stone while her husband didn't.

She waited until the water calmed and alerted passerbys about the incident. Well-wishers started searching for the husband who was later found dead in the river.

The matter was reported to Zoa Police Unit where the scene was visited in company of medical personnel from Mapanga Health Center.

Postmortem conducted by medical personnel from Mapanga established that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.

Police in the district are strongly advising members of community to avoid crossing overflowing rivers, fishing and washing along river banks during rainy season to avoid similar deaths.

People of Machinga Likwenu Constituency are expected to benefit from a K9 million loan facility which Member of Parliament for the area, Bright Msaka, has launched.

Msaka, who is also a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president for the eastern region said the loan facility which is under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) will be interest-free with an aim of economically empowering cooperatives and individuals to venture into manufacturing businesses.

Chairperson for Sitola Youth Network, Benito Pasani, has hailed the move saying it will bring economic stability in the area.
The legislator said hinted "all political and non-political affiliates will have their share, adding another K9 million kwacha will be released in June this year.

The Ministry of Agriculture says the Malawi Digital Plant Health Service (MaDiPHS) project will assist in the early detection and possible solutions for pests and diseases in the country.

Speaking during a high level sensitization meeting for policy makers in Salima, director of agricultural research in the ministry, Dr.Grace Kaudzu said the project is aimed at increasing productivity of farm produce in the country.

Meanwhile, MaDiPHS Lead Dr. Karl Thunes said the project is worth five million dollar and is expected to be implemented in 5 years.

The MaDiPHS project consists of a system where one will be able to detect the pests and diseases by sending videos, pictures and messages using both smart and regular phones.

*Police urge CPF members to avoid indulging in criminal activities*

The Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for Central East Region Glinton Mitayi has urged community policing members to avoid in indulging in criminal activities when performing their daily duties.

The call was made on Wednesday at Traditional Authority Chiwere Headquarters in Dowa when Mitayi had an interaction with the community policing members and the business community.

Mitayi said it is very worrisome to learn that some community policing members are involved in criminal activities when performing their daily duties.

Deputy Commissioner Mitayi further explained that it is not healthy enough for community policing members to be involved in criminal activities and this should be stopped forthwith.

On her part, Officer In-charge for Dowa Police Station Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Jane Mandala hailed community policing members and business community under Traditional Authority Chiwere for working hand in hand with police for the district to be crime free.

She, however, urged community policing members and business community to avoid taking laws into their own hands in dealing with suspected criminals which results in mob justice and avoid damaging police infrastructures which renders injustice.

Chairperson for community policing forum members under Traditional Authority Chiwere Peter Kayedzekeka said community policing members are geared to work hand in hand with police in the fight against crime hence the need for collaboration effort between police and the community.

Senior State Prosecutor Levison Mangani has told the Court that the notice summoning Martha Chizuma to appear before court was served on her but she complained about short notice so the State resorted to changing the date to today Friday.

Mangani says it is surprising that the accused person; Chizuma is not present in court. "The accused person's lawyers are here so they will tell us why their client is not here".

But Powell Nkhutabasa, one of the lawyers representing Chizuma has told the Court that the State is aware why Chizuma is not in Court today as the reason was communicated to them.

According to Nkhutabasa, Chizuma is in Blantyre working on a corruption case involving Karim Batatawala.

He has asked the Court to move her appearance to next week Thursday or Friday.

Nkhutabasa has also requested that the State should serve the defense with disclosures of the case.

The State has said the disclosures will be served by Tuesday next week.

The matter has since been adjourned to 8th February 2023.

In Nkhotakota, a 24- year - old man, Sekerani Brighton, has today been convicted and sentenced to serve a year jail term, for attempting to sell his uncle to work as a slave.

Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate, Felix Phaiya, heard that last month, Brighton, offered to sell his uncle, Lemson Malichi, at MK150 000.00.

State Prosecutor, Sub Inspector Thokozani Juziwell, said in court that the convict, approached a man who was surprised with the kind of business and reported the matter to Mkaika Police Unit.

Brighton pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to sell a human being asking the court to be lenient as he is a breadwinner in his family.
