HUNGER STRIKES MZUZU PRISON

Mzuzu prison has run out of food, authorities have confirmed.

They say the correctional facility is facing one of the worst food crises due to overcrowding.

The situation has been amplified by a rise in the number of remandees, notably 300 illegal immigrants who have been at the correctional facility for close to 7 months, awaiting deportation.

Northern Region Prison Public Relations Officer Austin Masangwale said the officers are on the ground searching for maize which has ran out.

The situation worsened on Monday, as inmates were fed cassava with beans.

The facility was holding 1,100 inmates against its holding capacity of 800 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, prison authorities say there is a high rate of crime in the country which is forcing inmate population to increase, triggering food shortages in the correctional facilities.

They say food supplies are low in most prisons because of the ever increasing number of inmates.

According to an annual police report, a slight drop of three percent occurred last year when 39,335 criminal cases were recorded compared to 40,627 that were registered in 2021.

Last year, the Malawi Prisons Service (MPS) acknowledged a shortage of food in the country’s reformatories, which they blamed on inconsistent deliveries by contracted suppliers.

Meanwhile, MPS spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba has indicated that the situation is steadily improving, as the authorities continue to find long-term solutions to address the issue.

South African police on Monday 20 March 2023 monitored protests by the country's leftist Economic Freedom Fighters party, which is demanding the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The party urged all South Africans to participate in a national shutdown but there was limited response in most of the country's major cities.

EFF leader Julius Malema addressed a crowd of nearly 1,000 people in South Africa's capital, Pretoria, where he claimed the government tried to sabotage the planned national shutdown by preventing buses from transporting people to various marches.

Malema led a march by demonstrators through the streets of Pretoria, while other marches took place in other cities in South Africa.

There was a heavy police presence in Pretoria where police were deployed to monitor any potential violence and intimidation against people who are not participating in the protest.

At least 87 people were arrested for public violence and related offences by Monday, police said.

"At least 24,300 tires have been confiscated by law enforcement agencies. These were tires that were strategically placed for acts of criminality," said police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe.

Every year, on 3rd March, Malawians observe Martyrs Day. Whereas the day invokes sorrowful memories, it is the day we show respect for the magnanimous men and women who braved bullets, suffered imprisonment and all forms of humiliation during the fight for the freedoms and rights we enjoy today. It is the day we remember and honour our freedom fighters and the values and ideologies they envisaged to make Malawi a better country for all.

MYSTERIOUS PLACES IN MALAWI

Hidden within the Chikala hills in Machinga, these mysterious sand formations are a true Malawian treasure. Their magnificent display will leave your jaws open. Ecologists say that the pillars are a result of rain and sandstorm erosion, however, locals are certain that the pillars are the making of supernatural powers; it is believed that they were the dwelling place of their ancestral spirits. The place was regarded as profane such that sacrifices were being offered at the entrance. Natives tell tales of people that went missing within the pillars of Malape; legend has it that a voice of an unidentified person could be heard from within. To date, the existence of these giant sand pillars and the stories behind them remains unknown.
