I got to interact with a flap necked chameleon at Kalimba Reptile Park and it was fascinating to see how calm and curious they are up close.

Fun fact chameleons can move their eyes independently which means they can look in two directions at once like built in binoculars. Their color changing is not just for camouflage but also for communication mood and temperature control. Another cool fact their long sticky tongue can be longer than their entire body and snaps up insects in seconds.

Chameleons are important because they help control insect populations and are great indicators of a healthy environment. When chameleons are present it usually means the ecosystem is doing well. Experiences like this remind us that reptiles are not just cool to look at but play a big role in nature.

Learning can be fun especially when it involves meeting nature face to face

You can’t visit Lusaka Zambia and not visit Kalimba Reptile Farm

Kalimba fun was in full swing yesterday and see, this time it’s all about chameleons. I got to interact with a flap necked chameleon at Kalimba Reptile Park and it was fascinating to see how calm and curious they are up close.

Would you do this for US$1 million?

My experience at Kalimba Reptile Park was not just exciting and scary at the same time, it was also eye opening. Snakes are among the most misunderstood animals in the world, yet they play a critical role in keeping our ecosystems balanced.

Snakes help control rodent populations, which protects crops and reduces the spread of diseases like leptospirosis and hantavirus that are carried by rats and mice. Without snakes, rodent numbers would explode, affecting farmers, food security, and even human health.

They are also an important part of the food chain. Snakes serve as prey for birds of prey, mongooses, and other animals, meaning their disappearance would disrupt entire ecosystems. Every species has a role, and snakes are a key link in that chain.

One interesting fact I learned is that most snakes are not aggressive. They bite only when threatened or provoked. Many species are non venomous, and even venomous snakes usually try to escape rather than attack. Education and awareness reduce fear and help prevent unnecessary snake killings.

Places like Kalimba Reptile Park are vital because they focus on conservation, rescue, and education. They help people understand snakes rather than fear them, and they promote coexistence between humans and wildlife. When we learn about snakes, we learn how to respect nature instead of destroying it.

Snakes may look scary, but they are essential, fascinating, and deserving of protection. Sometimes, getting close to what we fear is the best way to understand why it matters.

Scary and exciting at the same time. Something I’ve always wanted to do and I finally did it yesterday at Kalimba Reptile Farm in Lusaka where I got to interact with a python. An unforgettable experience 🐍
