SPARC SYSTEMS : From Ground Zero to Skyscraper Glory
In 2018, I was just your average journalism student at Pentecost Life University (PLU) living in Area 13. Yes, Area 13 place better known for catering to the stomach needs of all the average and big professionals working the Lilongwe city centre, if it was an area in a movie we would subtitled it “where Lilongwe meets at 12” lol.
I and my other friends rented an abandoned building at the Lilongwe Capital City Motel, which became our hostels for the next few years.
Every evening after a long day of lectures and pretending to study, I’d go on these therapeutic walks around Area 13. What can I say? A stroll in an empty developing area , quiet streets and watching the sunset was my Malawian version of a stress-relieving therapy. But what really caught my attention during these evening meanderings was a construction site of a future giant in the making, now known as the Sparc Systems complex. Back then, it was just a dusty plot of land, and I remember thinking, “afuna amangeso chani apa aaah tima 3 floors tatitopetsa build something bigger”
I have seen contractors mapping out this place. The amount of bricks , sand, cements and machinery being delivered at this place suggested this was going to be something big. Slowly, but surely, that building started creeping upwards. Every evening, a new beam, a new layer of concrete. I almost felt like a proud parent watching it grow. From 2018 to 2020, as I toiled away at my journalism degree, I witnessed the Sparc Systems building rise like a phoenix from a construction pit.
I graduated and left PLU in 2020, but life kept bringing me back to the City Centre. By 2022/23, the building was practically winking at me, standing tall and proud like, “Hey, remember me?” Every time I passed by, I felt this quiet, weird sense of connection. I’d witnessed this building’s journey, its humble beginnings, the long hours it had spent under the sun and rain, just like a determined student pulling all-nighters (which, trust me, I knew all about). To see it finally completed, being launched, and glistening against the Lilongwe skyline is like watching a friend achieve greatness. It is inspiring , very inspiring.
You may be asking what’s so special and inspiring about this building, let’s rewind a little bit. Back in 2018, Spark Systems was renting out an office space just like the rest of the mere mortals, trying to survive in Lilongwe. They rented out the same Golden peacock rooms my school rented out , “Bwana spark himself would park his fleet of BMW’s in front, boy that BMW6 was something”
So to see them go from tenants to owners of the debatably largest and Modern Malawian owned office complex in Lilongwe is like seeing that overachieving cousin who goes from sharing a bedroom with you in a cramped house to owning a mansion in Zambia and charging $5000 (10 mitta) for a performance. Talk about a glowing and levelling up🙌🏼🙌🏼😂
This whole thing taught me one crucial lesson: good things, like skyscrapers (and journalism degrees, Lol) take time. The world may not notice you when you’re laying foundations, but keep going. Diligence pays off, whether you’re a student slogging through assignments or a company building Malawi’s first true high-rise. The journey might be slow, brick by brick, but one day, you’ll stand tall and people will notice.
In one of my hard-drives I have pictures of this building almost at every stage in the 2 years I passed by it. Will share in the comment section if I find the HHD . My last physical sight of this building was late last year when I had one more last evening walk from area 47 to the Sparc Systems building, and when I saw it in its completed state I gave it a little nod, as if to say, “I see you. I knew you when you were nothing but a hole in the ground.” It was a reminder that growth, whether it’s in buildings or in life, comes step by step. And sometimes, you just have to keep walking by, watching patiently, and trusting that the rise is coming.
A big Congratulations to Sparc Systems Ltd on this monumental achievement! You’ve shown us all that with time and diligence, the impossible becomes possible. Here’s to the rise!🥂🥂🍾🥂🍾🥂🍸🍸🍹🍹
