Pharmacy Year 4 students at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences are gearing up for their upcoming symposium by launching a fundraising drive. With just months remaining until the event in October, the students have set an ambitious goal to cover symposiums expenses.
During a fundraising event held on March 16, 2024, at Mahatma Gandhi Campus, Modester Nembwe who is the chairperson of the symposium task force and Monalisa Khoropa a member of zigege sells subcommittee shared their plans to raise 3 million Malawian kwacha and outlined various strategies to achieve this target.
"Last Wednesday, on March 13th, we organized a successful car wash. Today, as you can see, we're selling zigege, and the sell will continue until tomorrow, Sunday March 17th. Additionally, we'll be conducting PB checks, hosting a movie night, and sending letters to community pharmacies and stakeholders to garner support”. Explained Monalisa.

The symposium, scheduled for October 2024 at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, aims to bring together pharmacy professionals from various sectors, including students, departmental lecturers, representatives from pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, officials from the Pharmacy Medicines and Poisons Regulatory Authority central medical stores trust and prominent wholesale and retail pharmacies in Malawi.
"We appeal to our fellow students, alumni, lecturers, stakeholders, and well-wishers to support our resource mobilization efforts so that we can achieve our target ”. Concluded Modester.

Intelligent But No Money
Poem (4/30)
by Precious BulamboQ

In a world of dreams and aspirations,
I bear the weight of good grades and elation.
University's door, a gateway to my chance,
But alas, in my circumstances, I have no finances.

A neighbor's car brought me to this place,
Excitement in my heart, a hopeful embrace.
New life on the horizon, a future untold,
Yet, a daunting truth, no money to hold.

As a student, I've entered this institution,
But the question looms, my contribution?
Will I see it through, or falter mid-journey?
For fees will come knocking, a fiscal attorney.

I hail from hard work, my spirit is strong,
Parents are proud, a sense of belonging.
New friends surround, a support divine,
Yet, I'm tethered, for money isn't mine.

Charity whispers its benevolent call,
Forms to sign, a plea for aid in the hall.
But in this vast world, who will I find?
To vouch for the truth, my lack underlined.

A pauper with dreams, a scholar unseen,
High expectations, a struggle serene.
Brainpower abundant, potential to thrive,
Yet, survival's key, the coin I must strive for.

GIRL CHILD
Poem (3/30)
By Precious Bulambo

In the halls of power, decisions are made,
Policies crafted, foundations laid.
Amidst those walls so grand and high,
A plea echoes for the girl child's sky.

Her innocence, a fragile grace,
In your hands, her future you embrace.
A good home, belongings fair,
Dreams nurtured with utmost care.

When education beckons, open the door,
Remember her worth, don't ignore her.
Not weak, nor a mere machine,
She aspires to a future serene.

On the streets, where destinies unfold,
The girl child's role is a story untold.
Nurture her potential, let it bloom,
In her, a nation finds its room.

From humble roots, she may emerge,
With beauty, brains, and dreams to surge.
Don't entice with false affection,
Let her strength be her protection.

In the tapestry of life, let her weave,
Empower her to learn, and achieve.
For in her hands, a nation's fate,
A girl child's potential, don't underrate.

WHY NEEDY STUDENTS?
Poem # (2/30)
By precious Bulambo

In hunger's grip, their voices roar,
Microphones amplify their plea,
Yet echoes fade, unheard and far,
A song is unsung for a distant king.

Empty tables, yearning for food,
Desires pondered by the privileged few,
Wishing to return to the comforts they knew,
But a tale unfolds, seeking rain from God.

Mouths agape, like horse pipes wide,
Results ignored, they choose to show,
Hidden treasures, like Wonderland's glow,
In the struggle, their resilience lies.

Throats parched, food elusive as rain,
Desert thirst grips them in disdain,
Set up minds facing relentless strain,
A pressure, familiar, like a fly-swallowed pain.

I ponder, with a wondering sigh,
In a world where needs multiply,
Why persist the stories untold,
Of countless needy students, young and old.

IN HER DESPERATE
Poem(1/30)
By Precious Bulambo

In joy, she danced through life's gentle sway
Parents' love adorned her day by day
The world's pressures, distant and dim
Till she met him, her joyous hymn

Back home on holiday's sweet embrace
Parents' gaze turned cold, a harsh space.
Met a man of virtue, love's sweet brew
Gave herself away, a choice she knew

Unwanted, the gift of life took flight
Pregnant whispers in the quiet night
A tale unfolds, a journey to find
A path through shadows, a heart to bind

In the silence her story resonates
A dance with choices and twists of fate
Through hardships faced and love's Cruel jest
She seems a haven, a place to rest

BPHARM CLASS OF 2022 CHAMPIONS DRUG SAFETY
BY Precious Chagwa Mangira

It has been the tradition that every outgoing pharmacy class of Kamuzu University of health sciences has its title that it champions as it leaves the college and joins the industry. Pharmacy class of 2022 never has let the tradition fail, this class which as the history has told is the best class the department has ever had is joining the world with the theme” strengthening pharmacovigilance in Malawi”. The function which took place at amaryllis hotel allowed health professionals from various health fields to ponder on how importance it is to ensure that adverse drug reactions are reported and managed through panel discussions and speeches just to mention a few. In his remarks Grace Mwembene, the chairperson of the organizing committee of the event said “it is your responsibility, my responsibility, our responsibility to ensure that drug safety is achieved and maintained through reporting of adverse drug reactions and screening for possible drug interactions when prescribing and dispensing medications”. The guest of honor, Mr. Mphatso Kawaye, who is the director general of pharmacy medicines regulatory authority, the mother board of the pharmacy profession ended the colorful, worth attending event with vote of thanks to the class for organizing the event, he said that as the board he expects the class to be top not only in class performance but also in their conduct. He further on said “don’t be too lazy, be participating in rebuilding the profession, our health system is as strong as our strength in our pharmacovigilance system”.

WE WERE DOCTORS
By Gift Mikondo

In a quest of saving lives
We left no page unturned
In those winter nights,
Our bodies were slaughtered
for the souls we never knew
At time the future felt so empty
as our feet trembled along the corridor
Nevertheless,
Littman remained the ultimate dream!
Step by step we climbed
the six headed hill
We cried, we bled for that noble coat.
For every cry of loss,
guilt painted our faces on the ward walls
There was no price worth
the bloodstain
Except the peace that caressed our hearts
We were soldiers,
born to war with death.
