MASSES URGED TO KNOW ABOUT EPILEPSY

The National Epilepsy Association of Malawi with efforts to raise awareness about epilepsy, organized a Walker in Blantyre aiming at informing people more about epilepsy.

Speaking during the Walker, Lucia Mnyamwa, who is a coordinator for South Lunzu Group for people with epilepsy acknowledged the improvement in availability of drugs which according to her, has improved over the years. However, shortage of food poses a great threat to the development.

"The drugs demands a lot of food for them to function properly. This is an issue as a lot of people with the condition have difficulties in finding food. It's a gap that the government and other well wishers should help us close " she said.

Chifundo M***a, a clinician at South Lunzu Clinic urged government to ensure that there is adequate and consistency distribution of drugs in the hospitals.

"The challenge we face sometimes is that we receive few drugs which prompts us give patients drugs twice a month instead of giving them drugs to last them three months."

People with epilepsy often face a variety of problems ranging from bullying and discrimination in the society.

One of the participants, Esther Kalemera who is also a person with epilepsy confided in Nyanja Online that for her, discrimination starts at home.

"My relatives treats me like I don't exist which forced me to start digging out sand from near by rivers to make sure that I provide for myself basic needs which are not provided for by my relatives."

Speaking in separate interview with Nyanja Online, health commentator Maziko Matemba said that breaking the silence around epilepsy is a big step in making epilepsy known.

"Its very unfortunate that we are still talking about Epilepsy as one of the silent diseases that lack awareness in the country. The media and the government should work on amplifying epilepsy voice by also debunking myths associated with the condition."

World Epilepsy Day is celebrated on 14th February and this year it was under the theme of '50 million steps for epilepsy'.

Some couple of months ago when Prudent Armzy released Fly. A popular hit that has disturbed airwaves in popular local TV stations, the nation was of the view that it was the last good song their eyes and ears wear fed with.

Little did they envisage that Armzy was busy concocting another track chronicling his life themed 1992, the year he was brought on mother earth.

Prudent Armzy a marketing manager at some top Printing Company in Malawi says he thought of reflecting his life in this hit song.

I have managed to uplift myself when everybody thought I will end up in the doldrums of mediocrity. But here I am a model to many,” voiced out Armzy with some commanding authoritative tone that Jah bestowed in him.

1992 continues by hyping that Armzy is not in a begging mood. He creates wealth by working hard. That he resides in a mansion with everything at a touch of a button, is a story that people who have shared their lives with him knows, that they follow him like AFCON.

Armzy could not wind up the song without mentioning the rose ignites his life daily, the love of his life.

“I’m so fly like ngati drown. Mkazi wanga ndi wanyatwa ngati Stelon Don” winds up 1992.

He promises more songs with videos that Malawians and the international community will be given under the hands of the dexterous dancehall genius.

DODMA DONATES TO CHIKWAWA FLOODS VICTIMS

Thr Department of Disaster and Management Affairs ( DODMA) has assisted with food and non food items to people who were affected by floods in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Maseya in the same district.

About 789 families who are in two camps of Beleu and Kamphiri are the ones who have benefited.

Speaking during the donation excise, chairperson of disaster in the district, Mchenga Thole, advised the victims to use the items property.

"Let me urge you to use the property property, you should not sell them, '' Said Thole.

On the other hand one of the beneficiaries Mary Malunga thanked Dodma for the donation.

Dodma donated 50 kilograms of Maize, salts and bucket cups among others.

DEFILER GETS 20 YEARS IN MZUZU

The Senior Resident Magistrate Court sitting at Sonda in Mzuzu City has convicted and sentenced a 50 years - old- man, Bannet Mwale, to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of defilling a 7 year -old -child contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

Mzuzu Police station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Enala Kalua has confirmed the news.

According to Kalua, the court heard through Child state prosecutor Sergeant Christina Shadreck, that the accused committed the offence on 28 October, 2020 at about 16:00 hours within Sonda area in Mzuzu.

Shadreck further narrated that on the material day, the victim planned to commit the offence because they are neighbours and he give her K80 as bride so that she should not tell anybody about the matter.

She reported the incident to her sister who disclosed the matter to the mother who immediately reported it to Mchengautuba Police Unit where the victim was issued with medical referral form and referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital where upon examination defilement was confirmed.

Mwale was then arrested and charged with the offence of defilement.

Appearing before the court, he pleaded guilty to the charge levelled against him, and he then pleaded with the court for leniency, saying he is the bread winner of his family.

In submission, the prosecutor asked the court to give him a stiffer punishment to teach him and others a lesson.

Passing the judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda concurred with the state's submission and slapped the convict with 20 years jail term.

Mwale hails from Majajande Village, Traditional Authority Nyambi in Machinga.
