On Tuesday night, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) launched a bunch of upcoming urban development initiatives in Hulhumalé and the Greater Malé Area.

Among the launched initiatives was the “Farukolhufushi Gated Community,” a project that HDC describes as “a luxury development that promises an exclusive island living experience.”

According to a promo video published by HDC, the “Farukolhufushi Gated Community” will have:

♦ 20 beach villas
♦ 60 garden villas
♦ 26 urban villas
♦ 230 serviced apartments
♦ a plaza and clubhouse
♦ an indoor sports complex and a lap pool
♦ restaurants and kiosks
♦ an 85-room hotel on the outskirts

So, what exactly is a Gated Community?

A gated community is a collection of homes that is accessible ONLY to owners and their guests. Access to outsiders will be strictly restricted at the gate. It also gives its residents a sense of “exclusivity”, as no “outsiders” will enter the neighbourhood.

Gates communities are set up for reasons such as privacy, safety, and security or to retain a particular lifestyle among residents.

However, gated communities may also amplify our existing socioeconomic disparities, marginalize lower-income groups of society, prevent meaningful social integration, and ultimately lead to a fragmented urban society.

Last night, opposition MDP held a public rally after a long hiatus. Speakers from MDP's leadership addressed the crowd, expressing disapproval over various aspects of the Muizzu administration.

Responding to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Republic Day speech, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said the Maldives is veering towards a dictatorship and concentration of power into the executive. President Solih alleged the PNC government is attempting to rig and steal the 2028 Presidential elections.

President Solih called out the current administration for the reasons of:

♦ concentration of administrative power
♦ attempted sabotage of the decentralized local governance
♦ financial management of the state
♦ "hypocrisy"
♦ being "secretive and deceptive"

"Dictatorial leaders will find delegating authority as a challenge. Because in reality, they are afraid of the people," said ex-Pres Ibu.

Further, President Solih defended his government's COVID-19 management efforts, saying:

♦ the government took risks for the people's benefits
♦ all state employees paid monthly, and nobody was laid off
♦ tourism land rents were deferred
♦ affected pvt sector employees were given income support
♦ small businesses were given loans for support

"The Maldives is in this able position today because of the choices we made back then. I say with confidence—we made the right call," said President Ibu.

The incoming 47th President of US, Donald Trump, has announced he would appoint billionaire Elon Musk to lead a to-be-formed department to boost US government efficiency.

The former President, who will become the President again in January 2025, said that the "Department Of Government Efficiency" ("DOGE") will be co-led by the Tesla and SpaceX owner Musk, and the former Republic Party presidential nominee Vivek Ramaswamy.

Trump says the Department Of Government Efficiency, which is to be run outside the Government, will provide advice and guidance to "dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies".

It will also "partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," said Trump. Trump also hinted that this department has a work timeframe, saying that their work will conclude "no later than July 4, 2026".

Elon Musk is a tycoon who openly supported and campaigned for Donald Trump in the US Presidential Elections. Musk declared his official support for Trump after the attempted assassination at a Pennsylvania rally in July.

But many are criticising both Trump and Musk for this plan--not because of the department's intended work, but the name "DOGE". A cryptocurrency called "Dogecoin" exists, and Elon Musk holds a lot of Dogecoins. The use of "DOGE" as the name of a government department could lead to boosting the price of the "Dogecoin" and further enrich Musk. Today, newspapers reported that Dogecoin prices rose over 10 percent after Trump's announcement.

Musk's net-worth is currently USD 320.2 billion.

12/11/2024

The state-sponsored unlimited medical scheme for service personnel of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and their families has always been a topic of scrutiny from the general public. Many have seen this scheme as unjust and discriminatory.

Today, the Ministry of Finance has published the proposed 2025 State Budget. In the Budget Book is a plan that will be very welcomed by the public: the medical welfare scheme of MPS and MNDF for service personnel and their family is going to be scrapped next year!

The Ministry of Finance said on the budget book that this medical welfare scheme enables "unjust advantages". Some of the issues mentioned on the Budget Book includes:

♦ Allows billing from various schemes for a single service.
♦ Covers cosmetic surgeries and medical consumables usually not covered by medical insurance schemes.
♦ Incurs "wasteful expenses" on the state, straining funds for people in need.
♦ Goes against the objective of social security.
♦ MVR 321.7 million is the expected expenditure on these schemes for 2024.

Therefore, the government has decided to abolish the Medical Welfare scheme for MPS/MNDF personnel+families.

Instead, MPS/MNDF personnel and families will be entered into a private health insurance package. There are currently a number government institutions, state-owned companies, and businesses in the private sector that provide health insurance coverage to employees and their families via group health insurance schemes.

The 2025 Budget Book says that under MPS/MNDF personnel and families will be eligible for Aasandha coverage just like every other citizen of the country, after the private insurance scheme's limits are reached. The state will cover all losses and medical expenses incurred by MPS/MNDF service personnel while on duty.
