Identity politics is a political approach whereby groups of people advocate for their interests and rights based on shared characteristics such as ethnicity, gender, or other forms of social identity.🪧
Although identity politics have won crucial social rights for minority groups, it can emphasize differences between groups, thus leading to polarisation.
In this article, Dr Michael Briguglio walks us through identity politics and how it can be applied. 📢 https://thinkmagazine.mt/beyond-labels-rethinking-identity-politics-equity-and-democracy/
Reconsidering Reason: Ableism and Speciesism in Moral Philosophy
When discussing animal rights, some philosophers argue that the intelligence of certain animals gives them similar rights to Humans. 🐕🧠
Basing the attribution of rights on intelligence, however, puts at risk people with severe to profound cognitive disabilities, giving this reasoning ableist undertones.
In this article, we discuss alternative philosophies that may ensure animal rights without ostracising people with disabilities. ⚖️ https://thinkmagazine.mt/reconsidering-reason-ableism-and-speciesism-in-moral-philosophy/
