Steve Borg has been voted 2019-20 Malta FA Footballer of the Year.
The Malta national team defender, who donned the jersey of Valletta FC last season, claimed the most prestigious individual honour in Maltese football after collecting the highest number of votes. Coaches, captains and officials of all the clubs in the respective divisions together with a panel of journalists who follow the various leagues take part in the voting process for the individual awards.
Borg, who has since joined Gżira United this summer after a long spell with Valletta, has won this award for the first time in his career after being a finalist last season. His nomination as MFA Footballer of the Year caps another positive campaign for the 32-year-old who produced a series of reassuring performances in the heart of Valletta’s defence before the league was suspended in March and eventually terminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two other finalists for the Malta FA Footballer of the Year award were Floriana FC captain Jurgen Pisani and Valletta FC goalkeeper Henry Bonello.

A day of records for Italy's Juventus FC after their 4-1 derby win against Torino FC, in Turin, Italy on 04 July 2020.
On a day in which Italian football legend Gianluigi Buffon went into the football history books by chalking up 648 Serie A appearances, another chapter was being written by Cristiano Ronaldo during the same match.
The prolific Portuguese became the first man since Omar Sívori in season 1960-61 to score 25 goals for the Bianconeri in the Italian top-flight, the Serie A in 60 years bringing up the milestone with his first-ever free-kick goal for the Italian giants - from his 43rd attempt with the club.
Ronaldo has now scored 46 free-kick goals at club level, with 32 for Real Madrid and 13 for Manchester United.
The Portuguese talisman reached that mark by finding the target in Saturday's derby against Torino.
His remarkable standards have been maintained throughout this campaign, with the target found on 25 occasions through just 26 appearances in the Italian top-flight.

Juventus FC's 4-1 derby win over Torino in Turin, Italy on
04 July, 2020 marked Gianluigi Buffon's record-breaking 648th Serie A appearance.
Buffon's 648th Italian top-flight appearance took him past Paolo Maldini's previous record.
Buffon, 42, nowadays only makes the occasional Serie A appearance and has had to wait since December to figure in this record-breaking feat.
Including his 17 Ligue 1 appearances for Paris St-Germain last season, he also has the record for most appearances in Europe's top five leagues with 665.
Gareth Barry, now with West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship, played 653 times in the Premier League.
Juventus, who are looking for a ninth consecutive league title, went seven points above Lazio, who went down 0-3 to AC Milan on the same day.

‘Noooooo!’ by Domenic Aquilina snatched the third place in the Sports category in the MIPA Spring 2019 competition.

This unique shot of legendary Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon and English referee Michael Olivier in the midst of a heated argument shows us the other side of sport, where adrenaline, disappointment and pride kick in.

Taken during a Champions League quarter-final in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in 2018, all football fans will definitely recall this Real Madrid vs Juventus match where Juventus’ incredible comeback was cut short after the referee’s decision to award a penalty to Real Madrid during injury time, marking yet another early exit for Juventus from the biggest European club football competition.

Domenic’s years of experience as a Maltese photojournalist and correspondent have seen him cover major key sporting events across the world.
