In the traditional Mongolian ger, the toono is the flap which is opened up to reveal the blue sky overhead, and we have named this series Toono Editions to reflect both this, and the symbol of the wheel of time, constantly turning. By opening up this toono, then, we are presenting the lives of Mongolians, their wisdom and understanding, and the sacred blue sky.

The Hulan Trilogy
❤️❤️

S.Erdene’s Hulan trilogy ranks as one of the most enduring love stories in modern Mongolian literature. Written in “real time” over thirty years, it recounts how the initial passion between young Sampil and the older, already married, Hulan changes, as the characters age and grow apart, into a heartfelt, yet ultimately absent, companionship. Widely regarded as one of Erdene’s greatest achievements, it also reflects the subtle changes in Mongolian society between 1960 and 1990. Marked by a sensitivity and wit characteristic of Erdene’s fiction, and based on his own experience of falling in love with an older married woman at eighteen, it offers readers an elegant meditation on the impact of time upon two people’s experience of love.

Sengiin Erdene was born in 1929 in Hentii aimag. Having graduated from the Mongolian National University, he worked as a psychiatrist and as the editor of the journal “Health” (Erüül Mend) and, later, of the literary journals “Spark” (Tsog) and “Art and Literature” (Uran Zohiol, Urlag). Beginning at the age of twenty, Erdene wrote both short stories and novels, and for many years dedicated himself to the development and preservation of Mongolian literary culture. He died in 2000.
