Did you know you can REDUCE THIS RISK by 87% just from administering treatment prior to age 10? Early treatment & intervention can actually lower our chance of developing an addiction to even lower than our neurotypical peersš¤ÆTreatment meaning: meds, therapy, strategies, neurotherapy or education intervention. I think a lot of parents think a diagnosis will end up labeling their child but Iām here to tell you that the more you UNDERSTAND about your/their brain and the way it works the better you can help them avoid truly damaging labels later in life. #wedorecover but what if we didnāt have toš„¹š¤š«¶š¼My daughter is 9 and we can already see the addiction marker in her brain. By the time I was FINALLY diagnosed with ADHD at age 39, I had already received several MISDIAGNOSES! Itās important to know that trauma AND/OR addiction CHANGES the way ADHD presents itself, especially in women! When I went for my ADHD evaluation last year I was open & honest about how hard my life has beenā¦ mayyyybe a little too honest. I ended up with a diagnosis of Bipolar2 disorder and CPTSD! This should have been a red flag for my evaluators but it wasnātā¦. Which means more education & awareness is needed. I straight up asked if my addiction (7.5 yrs sober) had anything to do with it? She told me no- WRONG! I asked if the trauma, CPTSD diagnosis, had anything to do with it and again I was told no - WRONG! So here I am setting the record straight. Letās first address the trauma bc if you are middle aged and just figuring out you have ADHD - you have trauma! Itās hard navigating a world that wasnāt designed for us, it creates challenges & barriers, it creates a great deal of shame & self loathing as wellā¼ļø The C in CPTSD, stands for complex, meaning the trauma is still prevalent in our lives, again this is common among ADHDers because we struggle with time blindness. This means we are stuck reliving our trauma over & over no matter how hard we try. Our brain has trouble recognizing how much time has passed so more often that not it feels like it happened YESTERDAY! Knowing all of this is important. It could be the difference between a diagnosis and meds that can help you orrrr staying stuck in the hell youāve been living with no way out. Just remember addiction of ANY kind can intensify the symptoms of your ADHD making it look more like a psych disorder instead of a neurological disorder! Trauma of ANY kind can intensify ADHD struggles sending more red flags as a psych/mood disorder vs a NEUROLOGICAL disorder! There is a strong link between trauma and developing an #addiction. I fought through everything I have so SHE DOESNāT HAVE TOšš§ š„¹When we know better, we do better! Dyslexia is pretty common among ADHDers, 1 in 4 with ADHD also have dyslexia, thereās way more to it than just flipping letters, writing & reading. #themoreyouknow A month after her eval we did a QEEG on Els & it confirmed everything from her eval spot on! It also showed that Elsie had extensive brain damage from our car accident in 2015. Things I wish I would have known prior to my complete ADHD Eval.
