🔙 how cool is this year in review from Ancestry!

I haven't done a great deal of research this year, only really taking advantage of a couple of free access to records periods to power through some records, but I'm surprised at what I've been able to do - imagine what these stats would look like if I'd been researching regularly!

🍃 viewed 425 records
🍃 added 239 people
🍃 spawned 6670 available hints
🍃 most viewed person was my paternal great grandfather Bertie Harold Rutter
🍃 added 516 records & photos

🧬 1522 DNA matches
🧬 8 of my DNA regions changed
🧬 5 journeys added to DNA story

What fun statistics did your year in review share?

⏪ Happy Day to all who celebrate!
Although it's been an absolute hot minute since a new episode has been posted, it's cool to see people still listening to all the old episodes!

I definitely want to get back to doing the podcast, but not sure when that will happen, so for now just enjoy what has been posted and all the other content across Uncovering Family History and Just Me, Victoria!

🎖️ We've all got at least one ancestor who has military service - how many in total have you come across?

For me, I think the current total for each conflict is:
Boer War - 2
World War One - 19
World War Two - 32
Vietnam War - 1

How many of those who enlisted returned home?

📝 Citing sources is a major flashback to high school and university, isn't it. It was a hassle then, so why would you need to do it now? While it seems like only a professional genealogist researching other people's trees need to cite their sources, it's actually something every single family historian needs to do, even if it does feel like an annoying or unnecessary step sometimes.

Citing sources gives you the ability to validate the information you've found - if you know exactly where the information came from, you can go back to that location at a later date to double-check the information. Not only that, but you've then got a research record so you can keep track of where you've searched and prevent yourself from going back over things you've already looked at. If you start citing early on in your research, it's an easy thing to keep on top of.

🍃 if you're still copying from other people's trees, it's time to change how you research…

On Ancestry, I recommend turning OFF hints for Member's Trees AND ignoring all Geneanet Community Trees Index hints - then all you have to focus on is actual record hints that you can research to verify if they are connected to your ancestors or not.

🌹In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We Will Remember Them.
Lest We Forget. 🌹

🎖️ As Remembrance Day approaches, thoughts turn to our ancestors who served their countries, particularly those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

If you're like me, your research is probably turning to these ancestors during this time. And in your research, you're more than likely going to come across some acronyms that you're not too sure about.

Some a quiet obvious - pvt. for Private - but there are others that are a little more tricky to figure out if you're not that familiar with military service. Not to mention, each country also has their own acronyms that can be completely different in another location.
