Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 Does anyone else miss WKRP in Cincinnati? 📻 😜
P.S. The second half of Season 3 of the podcast is coming soon. 👍
Happy Birthday, Joe Mullins! 🪕 I guess you could say that I’m a lifetime fan. 😂
We are missing Sonny Osborne a little extra today. This banjo giant passed away two years ago today. His bold personality was so evident in his playing. 🪕
It was an absolute honor to call him a friend and to have the opportunity to sit down with him for our inaugural season of this podcast.
We miss ya, Chief!
If you’re not at Blue Highway Fest right now, you’re missing out! 🤯
It was great to see Blue Highway Fest be named 2023 IBMA Event of the Year in Raleigh, NC two weeks ago! Daniel is heading to Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and is honored to be one of this weekend’s master of ceremonies. See ya there!
In Part Two of our conversation with Ken Irwin & Marian Leighton Levy, we discuss the significance of Rounder 0044 (iykyk 😏), the rise of Alison Krauss as one of the label’s (and genre’s) most important stars, and we even put Ken’s knowledge of Rounder’s stock numbers to the test!
Listen via the link in our bio, wherever you enjoy podcasts.
P.S. — Be sure to check out the new book from David Menconi, entitled Oh, Didn't They Ramble, chronicling the first 50 years of Rounder Records, available now from University of North Carolina Press. 📚
Fifty-one years ago today, ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken’ from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was released.
At last week’s IBMA World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, Daniel was honored to be part of a panel commemorating this landmark album, alongside NGDB founders John McEuen and Les Thompson, as well as Jim Lauderdale and Bluegrass Unlimited’s Dan Miller.
Do you still have this classic triple-LP?
It was an honor to be a part of this special panel at International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass yesterday, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken’ album!
Great to run into some fellow bluegrass podcasters this week in Raleigh for IBMA’s World of Bluegrass 2023!
Congratulations to Great Britain’s Matt Hutchinson of Bluegrass Jam Along Podcast on winning this year’s IBMA Momentum Industry Involvement Award! It’s always great to see Keith from Picky Fingers Banjo Podcast and Daniel from Mandolins & Beer Podcast in Raleigh.

Ken Irwin & Marian Leighton Levy are two of the three co-founders of Rounder Records. Members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, these musical mavericks from unlikely backgrounds led one of the largest independent American roots music labels and one of the most significant in the world of bluegrass.
Enjoy Part 1 of my interview with Ken Irwin & Marian Leighton Levy, and be sure to check out the new book on the label’s history, Oh, Didn't They Ramble, written by David Menconi and available from University of North Carolina Press.

It was an honor to have Tammy Rogers King of The Steeldrivers on the podcast! 🫶 This was after they tore the place down at SamJam over Labor Day weekend. 😎
(Be sure to check out the band’s new album, ‘Tougher Than Nails’! 👍)
Mr. Bill Monroe was born 112 years ago today. 🙌
When I was 8, my dad brought home a 4-cassette Bill Monroe boxed set that I had heard him and Papaw talking about on the radio… I still haven’t gotten over it! 😎
What’s your favorite Monroe song?
Yesterday marked twenty-two years since this haunting photograph was taken at the World Trade Center on 9/11/01.
It was really special for Tammy Rogers to tell us about the song “Falling Man”, inspired by the man behind this infamous image and the horrific events of September 11th.
Learn more about the song “Falling Man” in the latest episode of Walls of Time: Bluegrass Podcast.
Before the day is up, I have to mention that Jimmie Rodgers was born 126 years ago today. It can be argued that he wrote the first bluegrass song, “Muleskinner Blues.”
This framed photo belonged to Mr. Bill Monroe and hangs on the wall on my office. It depicts The Father of Bluegrass standing next to the memorial for The Father of Country Music in Meridian, MS, alongside Bill’s brother, Charlie Monroe, in front of a black train. It was taken at one of the early Jimmie Rodgers Music Festivals in the 1950’s.
It represents a whole lot of history, which is what I hope to do with the Walls of Time: Bluegrass Podcast.
Tammy Rogers King of The SteelDrivers sat down with me backstage at a bluegrass festival to chat about why she chose a life in music, why The Steeldrivers choose to make music that is all their own, and why she feels like the fiddle chose her. 🎻
Enjoy this backstage chat with the Grammy award-winning, Tammy Rogers!
It’s hard not to have fun when visiting with Darin & Brooke Aldridge! 🥰 We snapped this selfie on stage at Blue Highway Fest last year! 📸

Thanks to Rickey Wasson and the fine folks at Meadowgreen Appalachian Music Park in Clay City, KY for having me emcee at Crowefest this year, as we celebrated the legacy of JD Crowe. 🪕 Already looking forward to next year!
Yesterday was also Carter Stanley’s 98th birthday. This bluegrass pioneer was one of bluegrass music’s most lonesome voices singers and one of American roots music’s most revered songwriters. He passed away in 1966 at the age of 41.
This photo features The Stanley Brothers (Ralph & Carter) and Paul “Moon” Mullins (Daniel’s papaw) who played with the Stanley’s early in his musical career. All three gentlemen are members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
We miss ya, Mr. Crowe! 🪕
Our old pal, J.D. Crowe would have turned 86 years young today. 🪕 This bluegrass legend was the very first guest on our podcast, and was a source of encouragement, support, and friendship for many years. He is sorely missed by the entire bluegrass community.
What’s your favorite song featuring Crowe on the banjo? 🎶
Spotted some Walls of Time swag at CroweFest! 😎
Season 3 starts NOW! 🥳 Season premiere is available now, featuring Jamie Dailey of Dailey & Vincent!
Pull up a chair with Daniel at Jamie’s kitchen table, where you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll get an education from this Grand Ole Opry star! ⭐️
Looking forward to being a small part of these stellar bluegrass events over the next few months! 🤩 What upcoming bluegrass festivals/concerts are you stoked about?

Right where we left it in 2019… 😉
What Bluegrass Ramble venue in Raleigh proudly has our sticker stuck!? 😬
J.D. Crowe would have turned 85 years young today. A dear friend of the podcast and of our host, he was a special guest on the first two episodes of Walls of Time. J.D. Crowe passed away on 12/24/21; his friend and former lead guitarist, Tony Rice passed away 12/25/20, 364 days earlier.
A few days after Tony Rice’s passing, Daniel interviewed him about Tony’s passing. Reflecting on Tony’s talent, legacy, the music they made together, and his and Tony’s friendship, this interview with J.D. Crowe for Real Roots Radio, will surely touch fans of both of these late members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and of bluegrass music in general.
This would also be the final interview that Daniel Mullins would conduct with his friend, J.D. Crowe, so we thought it was only fitting to share it with you on what would have been JD Crowe's 85th birthday. Thank you.
