Backrow Records is a label based out of Durham College, bringing you Oshawa's best new talent.
Backrow Records was founded in 2010 as part of the Music Business Practicum course at Durham College. The course sees Music Business Administration/Management students running an in-school music industry through a number of initiatives that cover the various facets of the business including production, publicity, artist representation, event planning and ex*****on. Throughout the years, Backrow ha
s been propelled forward by some of Canada’s current top music business professionals, and has been the catalyst for several Durham artists’ careers in music. Our Mission Statement:
- To be Durham Region’s most innovative student-run record label, meeting industry standards and keeping up with the fast-paced, ever-changing music business at large.
- At Backrow, anything is possible; we make it a habit of exceeding our own expectations and aim to make a lasting impact on the local music scene.
- We work for our artists, not the other way around. We consistently strive to help our artists reach their full potential, and share their music with fans across the globe.
It’s Black History Month! Here at Backrow we want to use this month to focus on the many black voices that have contributed greatly to the music world and beyond.
In the upcoming weeks we will be celebrating black musicians and artists through different posts, stories, and playlists. Keep an eye out!

Najjah Calibur represents Toronto, Ontario, a city that’s increasingly central to international popular culture... and he is no newcomer to the city. He’s been in Ontario since he was a kid, and he’s been involved in the musical movements that have made Toronto crackle and buzz. Hip-hop, house music and ambient sounds, sleek soul, and party-friendly funk: he’s done it all. He took a break from music to become an award-winning, international host for FIFA – and he’ll be performing this winning hit at the upcoming World Cup in front of up to 60,000 fans.

Saleen and Chelsea, 20 and 22 years old, believe that having a platform means using it to do good - and what a platform it has become. With musical stylings evocative of First Aid Kit & Taylor Swift, the duo have caught the eyes of industry greats Kim Cooke, Dave Bashk, and Dan Clancy of Revolution Recording Studios, Sum 41, and Lighthouse. Durham’s best band (2018) has been described as ‘lyrically sophisticated’, ‘raw and emotional’, featuring ‘excellent harmonies and songwriting’.

Jason Harris is a visionary. He has had his ear literally to the streets over the last four decades as a B-Boy (Breakdancer), and as a nightclub and concert promoter. Jason has had to constantly re-adjust over the years, as music trends changed, and has learned how to stay ahead of these trend shifts in various genres. Jason is driven by music, community, and helping to inspire children with sports and music. Jason has an ear for up-and-coming talent and a knack for creative marketing. Jason hopes to inject himself into a rewarding career in the music industry, then learn how to break the mold, and re-create it.

His passion for music began in Africa cultural dance at the age of 10 where he participated as a drummer.
