In our style of iaijutsu, we have a rather unusual way of "kiai" sound during practice and demonstration

Advanced Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu Katana Sword Technique - Shi-Den (紫電) from Sakagami Bangai (坂上番外)
This was only my first time learning this technique and this was my fifth try of video recording it. Therefore please do not use this video as your learning reference. Even though my movements were not good enough in this video and it may take months for me to master this new advanced technique, i still would like to share with you my experience of learning a new technique from ground zero.
Shi-Den (紫電) laterally means purple thunder and it comes from a set of three advanced techniques known as Sakagami Bangai (坂上番外). Sakagami Bangai (坂上番外) was passed down by Eishin-ryu 2nd generation grandmaster Kameo Sakanoue (坂上亀雄 先生). This set of advanced techniques are practiced after one has learned and mastered the basic techniques in Seiza No Bu, Tatehiza No Bu, Okuiai, To-Ho Waza and Batto-Ho Waza. This is a practice method allows one to utilise the skills in sword drawing; sword sheathing; body movement; sword movement; the use of tightening and loosening of the hands; the change in fastness and slowness; as well as the variation of strengths in different movements within the techniques.

Saifa Kata at Meiji-mura Museum | 砕破型 博物館明治村で
The performance of a Kata (型) should ultimately reflect the Karateka’s intent and purpose. The practice of a Kata would depend on the goal of the practitioner. The same Kata would often be done differently across different schools and styles. For instance, the Saifa (砕破) Kata is slightly different between Goju-ryu (剛柔流) schools in terms of techniques but mostly the same in how techniques are executed. However with the same Kata in Kyokushin (極真) style, even though movements of the Kata are overall similar, the execution of each technique is very different to reflect its full contact nature.
At the early stage of learning, we need some form of structure and framework. But as we progress in skill, knowledge and experience, we start to have the option to breakout of existing limitation to develop something intrinsically our own. Your techniques and Katas would continue to evolve further as time passes.
This Saifa (砕破) Kata was performed during my 2018 trip to Japan when I passed by a traditional martial art dojo in Meiji-mura Museum (博物館明治村) in Inuyama (犬山). It wasn’t a public demonstration. I simply asked permission to go in and performed a Kata out of instant mood and without a Dogi nor rehearsal.
I didn’t think about the Kata at all and let my body guided my movements. As a result, the Kata was an expression of my body at that moment of time. The Kata wasn’t competition standard. It contained movements mixed with Goju-ryu and Kyokushin style. My Kata speed and intensity were adjusted according to my visualisation during my movements. It was my own Kata at that moment of time.

Karate in Tokyo 2020 Olympics 東京オリンピックでの空手
Tokyo 2020 Olympics Karate Highlights — Kata & Kumite
東京オリンピックの空手 — 型と組手のハイライト
My thoughts on Karate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were mixed. I was delighted that the Olympics had been a great promotional opportunity for Karate. I was happy and excited to see so many Karate practitioners displaying excellence in techniques and performance. I learnt a lot by watching them and they made my blood pumping.
On the other hand, its appearance in this Olympics might have accelerated the transition of focus and purpose in modern Karate training from being a martial art to a sport. As a sport, Karate is fun, promotes fitness and continuous improvement. As a martial art, however, Karate preserves traditional culture, builds one’s character and allows a life time learning.
In order to compete, Karate practitioners must adapt their training to fit the rules of the competition organisers. Sometimes the competitors might have to exaggerate their expression and performance to sell their winning moves to the judges, as we could see in both Kata and Kumite competitions.
Traditionally, Kats trainings were like shadow sparring with self defence applications. Kumite trainings were to improve each other’s combating skills in actual fighting. There weren’t no gloves nor protective gears. Each part of the body is to be conditioned continuously to be able to effectively damage others without hurting oneself as well as confidently receiving blows from others. That is why UKE (受け) actually means to receive rather than to block.
Of course, we are not in the Samurai age where we needed to always fight for our life. We are living in a peaceful society where everyone seeks a better livelihood and health. It makes total sense why many traditional martial arts like Karate are becoming more popular as sports rather than as martial arts. In the future, we might be renaming martial arts to martial sports. Osu!

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Karate competition excessive contact disqualification in Men's Kumite +75kg Final
Saudi Arabian Karateka Tareg Hamedi was disqualified in the men’s Kumite +75kg final and lost his gold medal due to excessive contact which is not allowed in point sparring competitions. Saudi Arabia’s Tareg Hamedi delivered a perfectly timed kick and knocked out his opponent Sajad Ganjzadeh from Iran during the men’s kumite +75kg final in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Due to the judges' decision deemed it as an uncontrolled attack, Tareg got disqualified and received only a silver medal while Sajad won the match and received a gold medal. In competitions, the winner is not always the better fighter but is the one who scores more points within the rules of the competition.
