Gunmen Kidnap Katsina Deputy Speaker’s Sister

Gunmen have kidnapped the younger sister of the Deputy Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki.

The victim, identified as Asma’u Dalhatu, was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday.

The gunmen took her away after they attacked Tafoki village in Faskari Local Government Council of the State.

The Deputy Speaker, who confirmed the abduction to Channels Television on Monday, explained that the gunmen suspected to be bandits stormed the village around 1 am on Sunday and moved straight to the village head’s residence, which is his family house, and kidnapped two of his sisters.

He said while trying to make their way into the forest, the hoodlums encountered some members of the vigilante group who engaged them in gunfire. In the process, one of the kidnapped sisters escaped and returned home safely.

The Deputy Speaker said the incident has been reported to the security agencies.

The police authorities in the state have yet to comment on the incident. The Police spokesperson in the state, Gambo Isah, could not be immediately reached for comment. No ransom has been demanded by the kidnappers.

The attack comes less than 48 hours after gunmen stormed Kurami village in Bakori Local Government Area of the State and abducted the wife and two children of the member representing Bakori constituency in the state House of Assembly, Dr. Ibrahim Kurami.

Bakori LGA is about 42 kilometres from Faskari LGA where the latest abduction took place.

Katsina State has within the week witnessed a different pattern of abductions where the trend seems to have been shifted to kidnapping relatives of political office holders in the state.

Kaduna Holds LG Polls Using Electronic Voting
Chimezie Enyiocha
Updated September 4, 2021

Voting is underway in many polling units across the 19 local government areas of Kaduna state.

For the second time since 2018, Kaduna State is using electronic voting machines for its local government elections.

The chairmanship and councillorship election is currently holding in 19 out of the 23 local government areas of the state.

The use of this innovative technology, according to the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, is to ensure a transparent and credible process.

This makes Kaduna the first state in Nigeria to adopt electronic voting and the second sub-national government in Africa to achieve such feat after Namibia.

Voting is underway in many polling units across the 19 local government areas of Kaduna state. Although election materials arrived as late as 10:00 a.m. in some of the polling units, the exercise is currently going on smoothly with the use of the electronic voting machine.

Also, there is massive deployment of security operatives in the polling units and flashpoints within the state to ensure a hitch-free exercise

The State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) earlier on Friday announced the postponement of the election in four local government areas due to insecurity.

The affected local governments are Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Zango Kataf, and Kajuru, and the electoral commission said the election is planned to hold on September 25, 2021, after security might have been improved.

Bandits who were in large number stormed Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, and kidnapped over 100 students.

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, hails from Maradun.

Speaking to The PUNCH, an indigene of the area, Malam Abu Kaya, said that the bandits arrived the school at about 11:00a.m on Wednesday when the school was in session.

He stressed that, although the number of the kidnapped students was yet to be known, the victims would be more than 100.

“We are yet to identify the actual number of students abducted, but we believe that they would reach 100,” the source said.

He maintained that the school has a population of over 300 students, adding that a significant number of the students were taken by the bandits.

Iran and Saudi Arabia expected to resume direct talks soon
Two regional rivals began secret talks hosted by Baghdad in April and more discussions are planned soon in Iraq.

Tehran, Iran – Iran and Saudi Arabia appear to be ready to resume direct talks hosted by Iraq in the near future, Iranian state media reported.

Iran’s new Foreign Affairs Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, said during a late-night interview on state television on Monday that he had spoken with his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, at the regional summit hosted by Baghdad on Saturday.

“The Saudi counterpart said we’re waiting for the new government in Iran to be situated and we will resume our communications,” said Amirabdollahian.

The two regional rivals began secret talks hosted by Baghdad in April but the discussions were temporarily halted pending the formation of President Ebrahim Raisi’s administration.

Raisi’s cabinet gained a sweeping vote of confidence from Iran’s parliament days before last week’s Baghdad summit, which marked Amirabdollahian’s first trip as foreign minister.

Iran’s envoy to Baghdad also confirmed on Monday that a fourth round of talks with Saudi officials will be held soon.

“Iran has expressed its readiness for dialogue and peace and has extended its hand of help and assistance toward neighbours and countries in the region,” Iraj Masjedi said.

The meeting, aimed at rallying support for Iraq was also a significant indicator of regional efforts to de-escalate tensions, marked the first time in more than five years that senior officials from Iran and Saudi Arabia attended the same event.

Riyadh and Tehran cut diplomatic ties in early 2016 after the kingdom’s embassy in Tehran was stormed by a mob following the killing of a renowned Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia.

Tensions escalated after Saudi Arabia said it would support former US President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign of harsh sanctions against Iran after his unilateral withdrawal from the country’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

In 2019, US and Saudi officials said Iran was responsible for a missile and drone attack on the kingdom’s main oil facilities, which temporarily knocked out half of its crude oil output.

The United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan late Monda, ending America’s longest war and closing a chapter in military history likely to be remembered for colossal failures, unfulfilled promises and a frantic final exit that cost the lives of more than 180 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members, some barely older than the war.

Wildfire rips through Algeria, killing 42 people including soldiers
Story by Reuters

Forest fires in Algeria killed 42 people on Tuesday, including 25 soldiers deployed to help put out the blaze, the government said, as thick clouds of smoke covered much of the mountainous Kabylie region east of the capital.

Dozens of separate fires have raged through forest areas across northern Algeria since Monday night and Interior Minister Kamel Beldjoud accused arsonists of igniting the flames, without providing more details on the allegations.
"Only criminal hands can be behind the simultaneous outbreak of about 50 fires across several localities," he said.
Last week, a European Union atmosphere monitor said the Mediterranean had become a wildfire hotspot as massive blazes engulfed forests in Turkey and Greece, aided by a heatwave.

Residents of the Tizi Ouzou region in Kabylie used tree branches to try to smother burning patches of forest or hurled water from plastic containers in a desperate effort to douse the fire.
The soldiers were killed in different areas, some while trying to extinguish the flames and others after they were cut off by the spreading fire, Kabylie residents said. The Defense Ministry said more soldiers had been badly injured with burns.
Several houses were burnt as families were escaping to hotels, youth hostels and university residences, witnesses said, adding that a dense smoke hampered the visibility of fire crews.

"We had a horror night. My house is completely burnt," said Mohamed Kaci, who had fled with his family from the village of Azazga to a hotel.
Speaking on state television on Tuesday night, Prime Minister Ayman Benabderrahmane said the death toll had risen to 42, including 25 members of the military. The government was in "advanced talks with (foreign) partners to hire planes and help speed up the process of extinguishing fires," he added.
Firefighters and the army were still trying to contain the blazes, and Beldjoud said the priority was to avoid more victims. He vowed to compensate those affected.
Smaller fires have ravaged forests in at least 16 provinces of the North African country since Monday night.
