Last year... I saw shege.

Life happened "in front of me" many times.

On one of those days, it was hunger sprinkled with being broke.

Here's what happened

I was working all day and couldn't make time to prepare breakfast.

So I left for work on an empty stomach.

This wouldn't be a problem since I can just dash out during lunch time and get food at a restaurant close by yeah?

But this is the real problem... I couldn't just dash out because I was broke.

If I used the money on me to "dash out", then I was going to be singing "tell me why you go charge tiri thousand naira for bus".

Omo! I would have been trekking it and that option wasn't palatable. So I had to "hold myself" till I got home and prepared something to eat.

But during the hunger episode, I was forced to think about my choices in life.

Like, why am I this broke?

How can I not have savings to save me at this point of my life?

It was then I saw the stupidity of my savings plan.

I was saving money in my piggyvest app without a plan so anything would just take it away.

So I couldn't save any reasonable amount of money for a reasonable amount of time.

It was then that the Holy Spirit drew my attention to the targeted savings feature on piggyvest app and I started saving with sense.

In less than a month of saving 20% of every money I earn, I've saved almost half of my entire salary.

Here are the lessons.

- Try dey save.

- Save at least 10-20% of what you earn. Even if it's N1000 you earn. Remove N100 and save it.

- Use the targeted savings feature on Piggyvest. It helps a lot with saving reasonably.

I want to do it again!!!

One thing I deeply grateful for in 2023 is the ability to make impact in people's lives with every opportunity I get.

The Flip the Script Workshop was one of them.

Yesterday, I made a post about being afraid to sell. Unknown to me, I was speaking the problem many business owners face.

I got several messages and even a question from someone in my community who expressed this challenge.

You can give so much value, I mean share valuable content on social media up and down. You even have an engaging audience but you’re unable to make money.

Not because you don’t have a great product or because you don’t know what to say.

The problem is just that you’re worried about people seeing you as a “marketer”.

You’re worried about what your friends and family will think of you. And marketers are seen as dishonest people.

You feel like a hypocrite or a cheat trying to get people’s money into your pocket.

This line of thinking will only keep you stuck and yes…broke too.

But here are 4 mindset shift that will save your life.

👉First, understand that what you have is not a product it's a SOLUTION that will help someone.

And as such, you have something valuable and tangible that people want. Sell your solutions. People buy solutions.

👉Second, the more you refuse to sell, the more disservice you're doing to people who your product or service can help.

Just imagine you know the cure to a particular disease. And people are suffering but you don't say anything because you're worried what people will think about you.

What would you call that?

Exactly… that word you just thought of.

👉Thirdly, as a business owner, you're not begging for favour when marketing your product or brand.

If we want to even bring favour into the equation, you're the one doing the favour, not the other way round.

👉Lastly, nobody is thinking what you think they're thinking about you. Most people don't really care. And even if they called me names, it wouldn't add or subtract anything from you .

So you must learn to focus on those who you can help with your product and service.

I remember days when and I would be on a long call that wasn’t work-related.

Those conversations were usually about him talking me out of depression, the feeling of being overwhelmed with everything and my overthinking problems (lol😂).

In one of those conversations, he pointed out a large wall that was stopping me from hitting my goals.

He said, “You’re scared of selling”.

At the time, I had great products, I had the skills, but I was just dragging my feet.

I had spent most of the year worrying about what people would think of me if I was all about marketing my products and selling stuff online.

This affected my business growth and finances massively.

I don’t talk about it much, but the piece of advice he gave me that day shifted my mindset and its definitely one of the arsenals I’ll be taking into 2024.

How much does a recent grad in Nigeria earn monthly?

It's salary week, let’s have this talk.

I’ll go first.

Armed with a B.A and an M.A in view, my 9 to 5 pays...
..wait for it…

Minimum wage!

Quick conversion?

That’s merely $30 monthly!

So I did some digging, I found out that the monthly earnings for most of our grads float between 40k to 150k, based on the job type, hiring company, and location.

Here’s the funny part:

Salaries disappear quicker than jollof rice at weddings!

One week post-salary and loan apps are getting more downloads.

Why?

Well, between rent, bills, daily meals, transportation, the ‘urgent 2k’ squad, and data subscriptions (because,TikTok will not scroll itself!), your account hits red.

But here’s some good news.

Acquiring any of these three digital skills can potentially double your income without quitting your day job!

I heard that Chinedu just started an online business...

In fact, he started affiliate marketing 3 months ago and is yet to make one kobo from this business.

This guy is now frustrated.

The same thing with Bisola who learned copywriting nearly 5 months ago. Her Coach promised that this will be the end of her begging for urgent 2k.

Bisola is yet to get her first paying client.

The one that is even paining me is Jibril who has been teaching people graphic design for free.

People have been thanking him everyday for helping them.

Now that he has created a course, nobody wants to buy.

These guys are all skilled.

They all believed that having a high income skill or starting an online business is the way out of financial struggles.

But here they are skill in hand but struggling to get by.

What then is the issue?

Many young skilled and talented people fall into these category who struggle to make a living from their hustle.

And it's already sowing the seeds of doubts in their hearts if this truly works.

But here's the solution to this problem.

Learning a skill or starting an online business is just one part of the equation.

Being able to sell, drive traffic, get leads, buyers and clients to patronise you is the other part.

Now that you have a skill or a product to sell,

Focus on driving traffic and generating leads.

This is the lifeblood of your business.

You can do this by running paid ads on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram or using tiktok influencers and WhatsApp TVs if you like.

But if you don't have the resources for this, you can still drive thousands of leads to your your funnel without spending a dime on ads using the ATM method I talked about in this document.

Have you been to those Nigerian wedding receptions where the amount of food is more than the number of guests present?

Hei God!

Aside the fact that you're going home with a full stomach 🤭

There will be WASTE of food at that wedding.

Let me paint a vivid picture.

Imagine the table next to you at that wedding. There are 3 plates there and no one sitting at the table because everyone has gone home.

One plate has jollof rice half eaten and fried chicken bones with pieces of meat at the 2 ends just at the side of the plate.

On the other plate, there's amala eaten half way with some soup at the side. The goat meats are gone.

On the other plate, there's semo. You can still see the V shape tip from white nylon bag it was wrapped in.

The semo has strands of draw soup mixed with egusi soup around it. The meat is also gone.

Then there are soft drinks drunk half way on the table and plastic cups lying down with the remnants of their contents dripping onto the white table clothe.

Annoying right?

But that's what a lot of business owners do with their businesses.

They focus on production and leave driving traffic, getting leads and buyers for later.

When these buyers don't come in the number equivalent to the amount of products, waste happens especially for physical and perishable products.

Then the start doing discounts to sell off or even giving it out for free. But they're already at a loss.

There's frustration because people are not buying.

I have observed that people spend so much time creating an offer without checking if people even want it at all.

The best to do is to get or create the demand first, then supply later.

You can find out of there's demand for your product by doing any of these.

✅ Ask campaign-where you ask on social media platforms if people will like to own a certain product or patronise a service

✅ Pre-order-where you ask people to pay for the product before you even create it.

✅ Waitlist - ask people to join a Waitlist of they'd like to have the product before it's officially released.

This stands for

A-Attract
T-Transport
M-Monetize

The first thing you should know is that making money from that business you're running starts with sales and sales happen when you have Attracted the attention of your audience first.

Attention is the sweetest cake in the world right now and everyone is dying to get it.

Have you noticed that when you go on Tiktok or Instagram, you keep scrolling and scrolling?

It's because they created a User Interface and Experience that will ensure that you give them your attention for FREE!

Then they monetize this attention through ads.

Those who are able to ATTRACT attention and are smart enough to TRANSPORT and MONETIZE it, make the most money.

What you should be thinking right now is, how can I attract a lot of attention? This should be the basis of how you create your contents.

They have to be attention grabbing in the first 3 seconds.

Once you have done that, next is: where do I want to transport this attention to? This is where your Call To Action comes in.

Monetizing is the last stop. What are you selling to your audience? Convert them from followers/subscribers to buyers.

If you're not attracting attention on social media, start now.

If you have, stop wasting the attention you're getting. Transport and monetize it.

Which of these 3 problems are you currently facing?

This morning I asked people the reason why they're unable to put their business out there and get new customers and clients.

Here are some of the replies:

👉"I'm scared of criticisms. What if people don't like me?"

👉"I really don't know what to post online"

👉"I'm so busy with work so don't have time for social media"

These are legitimate reasons why you shouldn't bother about online visibility for your business or try driving traffic and getting leads and potential customers online.

But here's the story of my colleague, Oluchi.

Oluchi did not like standing in front of a camera. She was the shy type. There's nothing you want to tell her that will make do it.

But when she saw that there was no other option to get people who are interested in her products, as Facebook ads and WhatsApp TVs were not giving her results,

She made her move.

My food processing business crashed in 2019.

I used to package cereals popularly known as tombrown. I had a unique recipe that was passed down from my granny to to my mum and to me.

But I couldn't sustain the business. No matter how hard I tried, it kept failing.

One of the reasons why I had to bring it a stop is the same reason you're struggling with your own business right now.

On that cold Sunday morning in December 2021, I woke up and didn't want to go to church. I had just completed my first semester post graduate exams and I was worn out to my bones.

I wasn't just exhausted from the marathon exams I had just written, I was exhausted with life.

The year was coming to an end and I couldn't point out what I had achieved with my life.

My income was a mess. I dropped most of my earning from my ghost writing jobs into paying my fees and trying to stay afloat.

I struggled with low self esteem, self disappointment, health challenges and emotional challenges.

I was tired of hoping, working hard and earning little. I was afraid I was going home with nothing in my hands. I saw the photos and videos of my peers doing amazing stuff and ending the year with awards and accolades.

But Shiphrah had nothing, or so I thought.

I managed to drag my worn out self to church. But I couldn't hold it any longer. I stepped out of the church and signalled for one of the ministers I could trust.

My aim was to open up to him and get counsel. But as soon as I saw him I started crying. I cried that day like I lost a loved one. I couldn't even say a word. I cried for almost an hour.

He had to call my close friend to console me. But I was inconsolable. They took me to the pastor's office and tried getting me to talk. I just sat there and cried.

All I could say was, "I'm tired. I want to go".

I was weighed down by the expectations, the responsibilities and burden to support my siblings and family, the demands from every corner and the desperate need to be someone better.

It was even harder for me because people around me thought I had everything figured out.

All I thought was, if I can't live a life beyond survival for daily bread, if I can't help my family and other people in need and explore my numerous potentials, what was the point of living?

I just wanted to stop existing.

Fast forward to this morning of June 7, 2023,

I started looking at my portfolio and here's what I found,

I have taught 500+ young Africans how to improve their income through highly profitable digital skills and Online businesses.

I have spoken on different online platforms and established great connections with big names in the African online marketing space.

I have earned the badge of "international speaker" when I was invited to speak at a workshop with people from Sri Lanka, India, US and even Australia.

I have helped small businesses increase their sales and profit through my skills in graphic design, visual branding and sales and marketing.

I am managing several thriving communities online. I am also leading teams that promote social change, faith driven missions and digital skills acquisition for income growth.

I have just received an award as one of the top 100 changers makers in Plateau State in 2022.

I am expanding my cycle and strengthening my emotional intelligence.

My transformation is still unfolding and right now...

I'm on a mission to help 450 online business owners, Freelancers, coaches, small business owners, authors and course creators solve one of their biggest problems.

📌Be grateful for the "little" things you have.

📌 Success is not how much you have in your account. It is about who you're becoming. Focus on becoming.

📌Share your story and your work on social media. You don't know who is following. It might be your next big client or someone gathering info about you for an award.
