🧗‍♂️ Hey Rope Access Crew! 🧗‍♀️

I'm here with an exciting video about the SKYLOTEC SPARK! 📹 After 8 months of really putting it to the test, I'm eager to share my findings with you.

🌟 What's Great About the Spark:
- It's pretty similar to the Sirius, but without the anti-panic feature, which I personally don't use.
- Super smooth when you're on the ropes, especially during rescues where you don't need an extra carabiner.
- The way the rope runs through the Spark is straighter, so your rope doesn't get twisted as much.

🎥 In my video, I cover a lot:
- Detailed specs of the Spark.
- How to use it during rescues.
- Remote operation techniques for when the anchors are just out of reach.
- How to lift and lower using the Spark.
- Its advantages in a setup with two descenders.
- Plus, a few things I'm not a huge fan of.

💪 According to Skylotec, the SPARK is made for really tough jobs. It's designed for quick and smooth descending. Simple in design and all metal, making it strong and durable.

📊 Quick Specs:
- Maximum load: 250 kg for 2 people, 141 kg for 1 person.
- Maximum descent speed: 2 meters per second.
- Suitable for ropes between 9 and 12 mm in diameter.
- Lifespan of up to 30 years.

👀 So, check out my full video to see if the SKYLOTEC SPARK is the right addition to your kit!

Some jobs you will never forget. The challenges we faced on this building were quite interesting. 1000 kg in glass going up 160 meters. I know there are a few companies around the world who do this stuff and for me 12 years ago these were massive undertakings. 950kg in glass 150 kg in suction unit and a sort of improvised lifting equipment. We ended up exchanging many of these bad boys and now I can say fun times. and me did many many of these crazy exchanges that nobody else would do. His slogan was “only call us if it is impossible “ so maybe you can imagine the fun jobs we did😉

RopeLab Australia, Remote Vertical Rescue, May 2024

It is time to run another workshop in AUSTRALIA so here is what I’m planning:

When: 6th - 10th May 2024
Location: Blue Mountains Australia
Focus: Vertical rescue in natural areas

Content
My experience is working with rope to solve problems. Sometimes operational constraints require trade-offs. Remote locations, overnight equipment, patient needs, team size, etc. While vehicle based responses will likely use 11mm rope based systems with full body harnesses, true small-team remote responses may justify 9.5mm or even 8mm rope systems and sit harnesses. These decisions, and the reduced capacity of these systems must be understood and taken seriously by the whole team. The best way to develop this: spend five days on the cliff in less-than-ideal situations giving technicians the opportunity to experience first-hand the challenges presented by the natural environment.

Another key part of this program will be patient care. To be frank, most “Rope Techs” are there to solve a transport problem. THE key focus must be the patient. No two patients will present the same way so we need to consider different constraints - much like sleeping bag manufacturers seem to assume we all sleep on our back with our arms by our sides… Topics rarely addressed on programs include:
- The time we can have someone in a litter.
- Packaging options to manage presentation.
- The latest recommendations for managing suspension syndrome.
- Medical conditions that can tolerate changes in litter angle (pitch/roll).
- Other hazards once in a litter.
- Harnesses on patients and whether they are tied into the rope system.
- The cost/benefit of having a bound litter attendant.
- The top 5 things the non-medic vertical first responder can do to save a life.

These considerations are beyond my expertise so I have decided to partner with Andy Hughes for this program. Where my background is “transport”, Andy’s is all about “care”.

Delivery
Everything will be outside in stunning Blue Mountains sandstone cliff environments. Rain, wind, snow, sun, dark, cold, hot, wet - come prepared as we get them all here (well snow is unlikely). These will not be drive-up sites and we will have to carry everything to each response.

Booking
We still have quite a bit of planning ahead so cannot yet lock things in - however we want to give as much notice as possible.
The cost will likely be $A2,500 per person and we will limit enrollments to 12 places.
If you are genuinely interested, please send an email to [email protected] with “RVR2024” in the subject and we will start a contact list and let you know once things are finalised.

Presenters
Richard Delaney (RopeLab)
Richard originally studied and worked as an engineer before moving to Australia’s Blue Mountains in 1992 to live and work has as a rock-climbing instructor and canyon guide. During this time he was also one of the co-ordinators of the informal Blue Mountains Climbers Rescue Group - a group of local guides who assisted with many rescues and body recoveries. Richard has continued to train and lead local rescue teams on many responses.

Since establishing RopeLab in 2014 Richard has delivered more than 50 workshops all over the world to a wide range of back, slack, and front country technicians.
Richard is the current president of the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) and, when not travelling, works as Level 3 technician on a wide range of rope access projects. I had a few conversations with people who shared several setups. And because IG DM search is non existent in 2023 I have no way of finding those conversations.
If you own a Wingman bag I would really appreciate it if you could send me photo/video of your setups to show in the upcoming review.
Help out and share this post so we can all learn the many different setups possible 🙏🏻🙏🏻. I’ll make sure that veryone who DM’s me a photo or video gets a shoutout on screen😉

Dapro Safety ‘s Protector coveralls were keeping us nice and warm today. High winds were kept out and heat was kept in. Fun times improvising around a lifting wire exchange and getting s**t done.
Here is Birmingham climbing back up to de-rig some of the ropes.

The Harken Safety and Rescue Wingman is the not so new mini haul kit or Set of Fours made by Harken Safety and Rescue. I have been using it all of 2023 and this is my review of the Wingman.
First of all Harken was kind enough to send this to me and get on a call to provide more information and help me out with this review. I am very thankful for that support.

It took a while to get the review done because I wanted to be sure and it is not a piece of gear I use everyday. And remember, I am approaching it from a rope access technicians perspective mostly and that has been 95% of it's use. Rigging and lifting things into place. That controlled lower ability makes a very nice device.

The Wingman is a mechanical-advantage device for load lifting and releasing. It is intended for work at height, access, and rescue use. It can be used for human suspension for up to a 3 kN load. It has a releasing handle that enables you to lower a load or casualty in a controlled manner similar to a descender. The MBS is 45kN and the device slips at 4kN. It has 15 meters of 8mm Sterling rope (I think HTP) that gives you about 3 meters of throw depending on orientation.
Since I started working on this video a 9 meter and 15 meter version have been released as well.
The Harken Wingman can be used for many things:
Pick of rescues
Litter scoops
Personal mechanical advantage
Load transfer
Personal positioning
Pre-tensioned back-ties
Redirect anchors
Dynamic deviations
And many more.
It is a great SOF and my favorite so far!

Let me know in the comments what you think of it 🙂

What rescue were we filming here?
It is one of my favorites to test true skills and rope management. As usual I did it with no extra gear. And also like usual it can be done in many different ways. Fun times.
Video is coming in a few weeks

08/12/2023

I posted a video a while back demonstrating a technique “Emergency break-into-a-tight-line and be lowering in less than 30 seconds”.
It seems some people are unsure if the knot tied to capture the loaded rope below the Figure-of-8 will hold.
I have tested this previously and this image shows how it performs with tension increasing from 0 though to 5kN.

Hanging around doing visual inspection for and .
We rigged everything in two I’ds and rig for lower. A simple throw of the ropes over a rounded beam and ascent up on your preferred way. Ascent in chest ascender and changeover or RADS style in descender. All good options. On this job I played around with the CAPTO and the CRIC. And of course the regular gear every rope access technician carries around.
Here I am discussing with the main NDT guy if I hit all the points.
This was a fun little job. All be it a little bit messy and on the greasy side 😜…
My workwear kept me warm and toasty on the inside .

The week after I was teaching IRATA .nl . Now I am a week at home catching up, sorting media, editing, doing admin and enjoying my kids. I even went bouldering with my son and my girl today. What a blast!!
The week after is another IRATA week. Looking forward to that!!
This is the way I like it. Combining the clean and controlled teaching with the practical nitty gritty rope access work and getting my hands dirty.

Playing around and experimenting with the CAPTO the other day between delivering IRATA training. Using the CAPTO as a progress capture pulley. I know it is not in the manual and it seems to work. I did a simple 1 : 1 bodyweight counterbalance lift with 50 kg weight. Lowering it was easy too.
If this really works (I want to test it a bit more) it will for sure add to the multiple uses for the CAPTO.

Greasy ropes… This is the same rope. It was white a few weeks ago. The last 20 meters is in use, the rest is rigged to rescue in a bag. The last few meters are completely covered in grease and this tapers of the further you get from the end. This rope is used on a big crane inspection job where everything is greasy and it is impossible to keep the rope clean.
For the conversation, when would you retire a rope like this, what are your considerations for retiring?
I am interested to hear your thoughts on this and how you treat this where you work.
Leave a comment and get this conversation started😃
