Meet Dr. Wadzanayi Mungoshi a young and charismatic dental surgeon from Zimbabwe currently working for the Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

“My biggest challenge had been getting people to respect me as a dental surgeon. A lot of times patients do not seem to have complete faith in me because of my age and my gender. I remember being on attachment at Bindura Provincial Hospital and one of the patients there flat out refused to be treated by me simply because of my gender. Unfortunately for him I was the only dentist there aside from my colleague Dr. Muwirimi who is also a woman! the best thing I’ve done for my self is believe in myself and my abilities. If a patient won’t respect me simply because of my gender I simply tell them to leave and go where they’re more comfortable. I have stopped taking offence because I know myself, I know I’m good at what I do and my gender plays no role in that. Luckily though, I work in Harare and I find the urban population is much more progressive.”

“I dream of an Africa where everyone will have access to basic needs such as food, shelter, education, health care and access to affordable data/ Wi-Fi (i.e., I want to see more efforts towards digital inclusion across the continent).
Secondly, I dream of an Africa where we cultivate a culture of harnessing ideas. I believe the next wave of inventions will come from our continent, and it’s time to create infrastructures that can extract ideas and turn them into something that will positively contribute to our continent. Ideas are the most divine things. Ideas are vital partners that contribute to society’s progress.”

Khuthadzo Magic Mbedzi Strategic Leader,CA(SA),M.Inst.d born in Limpopo, Venda-Thohoyandou, South Africa a qualified charted accountant by profession SAICA - The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and she did her articles with EY Careers and was signed off in 2017. Khuthadzo is currently a CFO GC2T - Global Command & Control Technologies where her functions include Providing strategic financial remodelling, streamlining, and strengthening financial operations/processes to maximise performance and achieve bottom-line gains. She seats on the company’s Executive Committee (EXCO), and she ia the Chairperson of the Transformation committee.

“I would say being a CFO at 29 is a highlight for me,at first it didn’t feel like a big deal, I would say to myself to avoid imposter syndrome, it’s just a subsidiary company, it’s not a group, we don’t have more than 100 staff members, surely, it’s not a big deal. I think only 3 months into this role in April did I snap out of what I call false humility limitation ,I realised that I still need to do everything as if the company was listed because our holding company is listed, and that because there is fewer staff, all that work is done by fewer people and as such not only was I a CFO ,but also an executor involved in the daily processes as well and not just managing the team on a strategic level. I had to lead whilst being in the detail.
I started seeing my role as an appoint by God and my leaders to keep the company afloat and to ensure bread for the staff and their families. And with every successful project, audit, transformation initiative I felt more and more proud that I was part of the solution in a time that we are facing many challenges in south Africa and the rest of the world. And it isn’t just about me, every girl who gets to see a black female be a CFO before 30 as opposed to the general norm and of pressure of being married with kids before 30.For me I would like to believe that this representation is that of a trail blazer demonstrating to young gals and peers, that all success is equally to be appreciated and that it is attainable irrespective of age, through hard work and dedication, nothing is impossible.”

Lesego Bannalotlhe is a seasoned banker with over 21 years of experience from a small village called Kalamare in Botswana. I have been the Chief Risk Officer of First National Bank of Botswana Limited (FNBB) for over six years with proven expertise that includes risk management , compliance, governance and leadership.

“I am risk management professional. A lot of people often ask why risk management ? I often use the analogy of a car having brakes. Most people think the brakes are there to slow down the car, my view is the brakes are there to give you more control of the car as you drive as fast as you want. Having more control and knowing what to do if things go wrong is basic risk management. That is how I support the business. We are living through one of the toughest times in history. Supporting the organisations strategy is critical. Through my leadership we have refined the FNBB risk maturity framework that will support the banks strategy. A robust and agile risk strategy ensures resilience especially in these tough times where we are all impacted on a personal level and work environment.”

Meet Dr hikma telsem a 25 year old medical doctor from Ethiopia.

“I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder with ADHD plus PTSD. That was the darkest moment of my life. I was admitted to a rehabilitation centre. I was on medication for more than 3 month I had to start again but I got out stronger. I recovered with an amazing mind set and it made me realise how strong i was. Alhamdulilah I got out even stronger. I gave my self time to heal. And with my amazing family i knocked it down. I am a medical doctor so yeah the COVID-19 pandemic it affects me directly. We had to stay night after night with patients, watching people die right and left, struggling with the shortage of medication, staffs, PPE, trying to give the glimpse of hope to our patients. Thats how our daily life pretty much looks like. I still work in COVID-19 center in the ICU, so the struggle is real and it continues.

“My latest achievement I’m proud of is successfully opening up and running a successful call centre for a commercial bank. I do not have a background in customer services or call centre management but each day I applied myself to the task, ensured I was learning and utilising all the resources at my disposal. Each day I try to apply this positive type of thinking to everything that I do and to be a better person than the one the day before.”

Siyamthanda Williams is a Brand Development Manager, strategically running the xtreme sponsorship division for King Price Insurance South Africa through Porcupine Union. We had an exclusive interview with Siyamthanda.

“Well marketing drew me to it, we grew up thinking marketing was only what telemarketers did which is why I studied business administration and avoided marketing, its Gideon Galloway the CEO of King Price that convinced me that I would be a great fit for marketing and urged me to hone the skills which I did for many years as a marketing assistant and I’m still learning.

Our strategy is to focus on how we can improve, we know who our competitors are, what they are doing but we try not to focus too much attention on that but rather on how we can improve and innovate. We sit back after each project and make a note of what can be improved, how far we are from the standard and level we wish to achieve and what we can do with each opportunity given to get there.”

Meet Khanyisile Tshabalala a banking and finance lawyer admitted in South Africa and Australia. Khanyisile born in Diepkloof Extension phase two township in South Africa and now an associate at an international law firm in Sydney, Australia. We had an exclusive interview with Khanyisile.

“I envisaged myself taking up space in a corporate environment, however , I was not entirely sure which career path to pursue until law chose me (I'll explain). In high school, I focused on mathematics and physical science with the potential hope of becoming an industrial engineer with a corporate focus on streamlining processes. However, life happened, and unexplainably, I was selected to join the Law School at the University of the Witwatersrand even though this was not my first preference. After weeks of unanswered phone calls and emails to the Engineering School, I reconciled myself with the fact that I would be joining Law School and pursuing a career in law. It was at this point that I took active steps to research information regarding the profession and seek mentors for guidance. As challenging as Law School was, I really had some of the best days of my life there and I am happy that it chose me.”

Nomthandazo Sibanyoni is a logistician at Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

“I never aspired to be a logistician but a social worker, pity I didn't get admission in that field and because I wanted to study so bad I ended up choosing logistics with an aim of waiting until my 2nd year to at least change to something I thought I wanted to study, but I fell in love with logistics that I ended up getting a job in the logistics and supply chain industry. And what inspired me to stay within this profession was my understanding of the importance of Logistics and supply chain globally, the key role it plays in the economy in that it supports the movement and flow of many economic transactions and that one can learn a lot from this business, not only for work purposes but for personal gains as well.”

Natasha Siniscalchi-Dönmez the Manager: Exports – Africa-China Trade for Standard Bank Group Business

“There are definitely a few good export wins I have made possible over the last few years and also a joint-venture I facilitated between an Italian company and a South African company that led to both ramping up their local production capabilities, but there is a also a recent achievement that stands out to me on the basis of its strategic value. In a previous role, the organization's only focus markets in Sub-Saharan Africa were South Africa and Nigeria. I identified capable consultants in Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania and motivated budget requests to enable us to support client activity in these markets. The introduction of these new markets went a long way to assisting exporters that had already established a track record of exporting to the continent and were looking to grow their footprint in the region. It also allowed many of these exporters to "get a foot in the door" before Covid-19 travel restrictions were imposed (and while that wasn't on the cards when I started pushing for us to expand into these markets, it is proof of early entrant advantage when it comes to market entry I suppose.”

Masake Maleka is a 22-year-old youth ambassador and Philanthropist at heart. She’s the founder of a Campaign called Meisie Muis Motivates and she has been currently appointed as the Corporate Social Investments Co-Ordinator at ANB Investments.

“Firstly, we are living in times where instant gratification is something we are faced with forgetting that the small steps we take are a big contribution to the larger picture that awaits us. Giving up is not an option because in giving up, progress cannot be seen. A journey of a thousand miles begins with single steps and unfortunately those small steps require patience. We also need to look at peoples’ achievements as motivation never as competition or you feeling like you are being delayed because we are all embarking on different journeys. One important reminder is that we are living in a very digital era and social media contributes to a lot as people tend to reflect on the self and notice a delay or failure in their lives. Keep in mind that we do not document our failures so remember to stay calm and try again. Keep in mind that our greatest successes come from the lessons learnt from our moment of failures. Receiving the Rectors Award at the University of Stellenbosch for Excellent Achievement has been by far the best achievement that I can boldly say that I am proud of and has been a good highlight in my personal and academic life.”

A Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) With A Smile
We have a chat with Olwethu Masanabo a Financial Planning
professional who is a member of a professional body called The Financial Planning Institute - SA

“Landing up in this profession was a divine accident, as I did not really know anything about this profession. From the time I was in high school, I thought I would be an accountant, so I did my undergraduate and honours degrees in Financial Management. I have never worked as an accountant though as I struggled to get an accounting job, and when I applied for a job which I thought was something else, I entered this industry I fell in love with it immediately. I loved what it stood for, which was helping individuals and companies alike to not only create and protect wealth, but to make wise financial decisions which could potentially have a positive impact on the country as a whole and its economy. If people could plan for their retirement, and afford to maintain themselves when that life stage came, then that would lessen the financial burden on the government and free up money to be utilized elsewhere. And that is just one of the examples in which financial planning is beneficial.”

“: If persistence especially in the face of adversity and lack of results have not worked for me, I would not recommend it to you. Persist, especially when it seems things are at it’s hardest. Persist, even if you are not currently seeing results.
Persistence, as a virtue, will greatly reward you with results. I wish Africa would give more spotlight to her women. Her women are capable of achieving extraordinary feats. Only if they are encouraged. So I wish that Africa would encourage her women ... to be more.”

Meet Mishkah Wahab a 25-year-old Business Development Manager at MRT LAW a boutique law firm in Cape Town. This is the exclusive interview with Mishkah.

“First and foremost, my wish is for the world to be covid free. My wish is to see a reduction in corruption on all levels. For Africa to be recognised for the remarkable transformation. By recognizing Africa as an opportunity, rather than a threat, governments, citizens, and organizations on the continent and around the world will be better positioned to face challenges and further boost positive trends. For proper skills development programs and youth employment interventions across Africa to come into play that could combat the youths account for 60% of all of Africa’s jobless. Despite the encouraging economic development enjoyed by many African countries, many of them are still characterized by widespread poverty and inequality. These coupled with limited access to quality education, health, nutrition, technology and innovation are impediments to accelerating Africa’s growth and entry into higher value-added areas of production and competitiveness.”
