What a joy recording this fiddle part yesterday at The Dream. (🎻Jeff Elliott). Noni Culotta and her backing band Lasso came in this weekend to record an EP. More to come!

And how bout this, 10% off if it’s your first project at The Dream!

Tyler Olfers came into The Dream to record a single about a sandwich. But the sandwich is a metaphor for the music industry. And oh yeah, we made a really crunchy sandwich and recorded it as a percussion instrument. For Tyler, the process and experience of recording and collaborating is even more meaningful and rewarding than the final product. Tyler's one of the good people.

"Goldie Pipes" is Sha Alheem, a deeply talented musical mind who called on all his influences to craft his latest album "The Chocolate Quarters". His voice being his only instrument, he sings all the instrumental parts acapella to get everyone in his (stellar) band on the same page just moments before tracking. Goldie Pipes has a knack for surrounding himself with precisely the right players for his musical vision, and it was a true pleasure being behind the board while he worked it all out in the studio.

Alva Sim came into The Dream with her new band to record some demos and work out arrangements. Hear how she and her bandmates collaborated to create visions for songs that for a long time lived only as a solo acoustic guitar and vocal. Alva talks about the thrill of hearing the band come in on the downbeat with the full arrangement, the nerves involved in making a commitment to turn your songs into "something", and a mysterious game Hoag has never heard of called "Rounders".

22/06/2021

Hoag's brother and Dream Studios co-founder Bonesaw joins him for Episode 1 and together they tell the story of building "The Dream" in their backyard. DIgging a ditch almost killed their bodies. Their trip to the dump almost killed their souls. But with the help of their friends and fans, and with a morale boost from a fun game called "Tapeball", they finally achieved their dream; a recording studio right in their own backyard. Visit www.thedreamrecordingstudio.com for videos relating to their discussion.

Elvin Levins can write a country-western song. And you'll smile when you sing along, until you realize you're singing about some pretty dark stuff. But ya know, in a fun way. Adam Berlin is a drummer with a whimsical approach to his instrument that served Elvin's songs wonderfully. With the help of a young Austin guitar phenom named Kelvin Stewart and an oddball Austin pedal-steel legend named Bob Hoffnar, they crafted a 6-song masterpiece of an EP.

22/06/2021

Colin Clark and David Pulkingham came into The Dream to record an album of covers featuring songs from some of Austin's most legendary songwriters. But! They didn't just karaoke these things. They flipped them upside down and gave them a refreshing twist, which is usually a tall order unless you have one of Austin's most unique vocal baritones and the creative force of world-class players like Pulk (guitar), Glenn Fukunaga (bass), Bobby Trimble (drums), Bob Hoffnar (pedal-steel), and Cynthia Slate (vocals) behind you.

Matt Read and Chris McQueen are a devastatingly talented and creative acoustic guitar duo whose songs showcase a mastery of written melodic themes, improvised explorations of those themes, and enough time changes and metric modulations to keep you nerding out forever.

An alum of NBC's hit show "The Voice", Reid came into The Dream shortly after his TV run to record his first solo effort. We talk about drinking a lot of whiskey when the power goes out (a rare event at The Dream, I assure you), being a perfectionist ("that castanet hit should be 0.5 db quieter"), and "seeing" a song in colors before you hear it in sounds.

JD Torian made an album that Hoag classifies as "Robot Rock". He's not sure JD is cool with that designation, but he means it as a compliment. In episode 3 of the Dream Studios Podcast, JD tells his story of selling a pizza business, launching a music career, and surprising everybody with a big, unusual sound that is equal parts retro and modern. Sing-along hooks and a rich vocal rasp over thick layers of synth, guitars, bass, and drums.

Marshall Lardon performs and records under the name "Just My Luck". In episode 2 of the Dream Studios Podcast, we talk about his experience recording his debut album "Business As Usual". Topics include getting trippy with floor tom reverb; the problem with too much revision; the joy of limitless overdubbing; how finger snaps can take a song from good to great, and so much more. 🎙A new podcast! 🎙Today I launch episode 1 of “Dream Studios: The Podcast” in which I interview bands and artists who have recorded their “Dream albums” here at...The Dream. The link to listen on Spotify is below, but you can listen to it on any of your favorite podcast platforms.

The debut episode today features a conversation with my brother Bonesaw, co-founder of The Dream and my band mate in . We tell the story of building The Dream together in our backyard, and how the digging of the plumbing ditch and hanging of the drywall almost killed our bodies, and the trips to the dump and battles against the insidious behavior of caulk almost killed our souls. With the help of our friends and fans and family, however, and with a morale boost from a preposterously delightful game we invented called “Tapeball”, we finally achieved our dream; a recording studio right in our backyard.

I hope you enjoy this episode and all future episodes with artists, and that you discover some great music. I’ll be releasing one episode a week, and season one has 11 episodes. And please take a moment to rate it, subscribe to it, recommend it, etc! Also, I have a brand new website and a YouTube Channel (both are also in my bio link) with all sorts of videos that relate to the podcast episodes and topics/moments discussed.👍🏼

This album is all over the place in all the best ways. My favorite track is “Workin’ on Workin’ it Out”, followed closely by those intros and outros, actually. And the one I played drums on (“Buttered Grits”). Helluva job, , it was a pleasure mixing this fine album.

DREAM STUDIOS

Tucked away in the heart of south Austin, we are a full-service shop offering professional engineering, mixing, session-performance, and mastering. We use Pro Tools 2019 and top-of-the line analog emulation plug-ins during the mixing process (Universal Audio and Slate, mostly), and we have a wide range of instruments, amplifiers, microphones, drums, and percussion available for use. If you have specific questions concerning gear and what you’ll need before recording with us, just ask!

We know recording can be an intimidating process, but here at The Dream we like to keep the atmosphere relaxed and fun, and our aesthetic reflects that. A silly dog named Izzy roams the big yard out front, where sprawling fig trees adorn the facade. Inside the recording space itself are funky book shelves filled with hundreds of books that run the entire length of the ceiling and down each corner of the room, doubling as sound diffusers that help properly treat the room acoustically. Even our “microphone locker room” hanging on the wall adds to the charm of the place, while also serving an acoustic purpose (again, diffusion).

At the same time, however, we know it’s not all fun and games. We understand you’ve put a lot of work into preparing to come into the studio to record, and that you’ve likely saved up some hard-earned money. As such, we take the work seriously and like to move quickly and with great focus. We strive to be adaptable, reliable, available for creative input, and— when it’s needed—even your shoulder to cry on (hey, it happens). This is to ensure that your project sustains a lively momentum and stays on budget.

Hoag is the lead recording and mixing engineer here at The Dream and is also a drummer (Full Service, Two Player, Seaweed Sandwich) should you require his drumming services for your project. He is also available for hire as a producer—an “ear”— who can help make creative decisions that will turn your “album” into your “Dream Album”.
