Ielūkosimies jaunākajā žurnāla “Letonica” numurā (60.). Uzmanības centrā ir Slovēnijas Zinātņu un mākslas akadēmijas (ZRC SAZU) Slovēnijas literatūras un literatūrzinātnes institūta (Inštitut za slovensko literaturo in literarne vede ZRC SAZU) pētnieka Marijana Doviča raksts “Tautas dzejnieki mazo Eiropas tautu literārajās tradīcijās”.

Tautas dzejnieku fenomens ir raksturīgs daudzu Eiropas un ne tikai Eiropas tautu literārajām tradīcijām. Tas, cik liela nozīme katrā konkrētajā gadījumā piešķirta ar šo nosaukumu apzīmētajām personībām, mēdz ievērojami atšķirties. Tomēr tautas dzejnieka jēdziens ir lielā mērā veicinājis nacionālo literāro tradīciju attīstību tā dēvētā garā 19. gadsimta laikā un nereti ir saglabājies līdz pat mūsdienām.

Šajā rakstā aplūkoti tautas dzejnieki dažādās Eiropas valstīs un sniegts ieskats dažās kopsakarībās starp šo personību dzīves gājumu, darbiem, kulta statusu un lomu nācijas attīstībā. Galvenais uzsvars ir likts uz mazajām un (semi)perifērajām literārajām tradīcijām (piemēram, ungāru, bulgāru, poļu, melnkalniešu/serbu, latviešu, ukraiņu, katalāņu, īru, islandiešu, slovēņu un čehu), kur godājamu dzejnieku loma šķiet īpaši būtiska. Mazo tautu literatūrām tautas dzejnieka jēdziens dāvāja cerību nodrošināt sev kaut vai nelielu vietu starp “nemirstīgajiem dižgariem” topošajā pasaules literatūras kanonā. Tautas dzejniekam pašam savukārt nācās atbilst gan savas nacionālās kopienas prasībām, gan tām, kuras uzstādīja “likumdevēji Citi” starptautiskajā kanonā. Tas ir viens no iemesliem, kāpēc tautas dzejnieka specifiskajā lomā ne katrā kultūrā nokļuva tieši tāds dzejnieks, kas visaktīvāk rakstītu tieši par nacionālo tematiku.

Let us take a closer look at the latest issue of the journal “Letonica” (No. 60), which features an article by Marijan Dović, a researcher at the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Inštitut za slovensko literaturo in literarne vede ZRC SAZU), titled “National Poets in Small European Literary Cultures”.

National poets are a phenomenon highly pertinent to many literary cultures in Europe and also beyond. The importance ascribed to the individuals labeled with this particular qualifier has varied considerably from case to case. However, the institution of the national poet contributed significantly to the formation of individual literary cultures throughout the so-called long 19th century and has often persisted to the present day.

This article looks at the national poets in various European literatures and offers some insights into the relationships between their lives, their works, their cults, and their function in nation-building. The particular focus is on small and (semi-)peripheral literary cultures (such as Hungarian, Bulgarian, Polish, Montenegrin/Serbian, Latvian, Ukrainian, Catalan, Irish, Icelandic, Slovenian, and Czech), where the role of venerated poets seems to be particularly prominent. In smaller literary cultures, the institution of the national poet offered a promising way to secure at least a modest place in the gallery of the “great immortals”, the canon of the emerging Weltliteratur. In turn, the national poet had to comply both with the expectations of their particular national community and those of the “law-giving Other”, the international canon of world literature. This is one reason why the unique position of the national poet of a particular culture was not necessarily occupied by the poet who addressed national issues in the most ardent manner.

📣 The 60th issue of the journal Letonica is out now! 🎉
The latest thematic issue, “Rainis and Aspazija among Contemporaries in the European Cultural Context,” has been created in honour of Rainis’s and Aspazija’s 160th anniversary. Guest editor – Eva Eglāja-Kristsone.

The issue is based on the international conference “Rainis and Aspazija among Contemporaries in the European Cultural Context” (Rainis and Aspazija Summer House, Majori, 26–27 September 2024), organised by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, the Rainis and Aspazija Museum, and the Association of Memorial Museums.

Joprojām uzmanības fokusā ir žurnāla 56. numurs. Šoreiz Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte (Riga Stradins University) mediju un komunikācijas pētnieka Sergeja Kruka raksts "Neviennozīmīgas gramatiskās formas latviešu valodas korpusos".

Neviennozīmīgas gramatiskās formas apvieno dažādu vārdšķiru īpašības, un saņēmējam pašam jāizlemj, vai vārds teikumā ir, piemēram, subjekts, objekts vai predikāts. Neiekļaujot kotekstā un kontekstā skaidras atslēgas interpretācijai, sūtītājs neuzņemas atbildību par vēstījuma saturu, taču saglabā tiesības noraidīt sūtītāja sniegto interpretāciju kā neatbilstīgu. Šādu neviennozīmīgu gramatisko formu īpašību komunikatori var izmantot hierarhisko sociālo attiecību uzturēšanai. Kritiskā diskursa analīze pauž, ka valoda tāpēc nav neitrāls saziņas līdzeklis.

Raksts meklē statistisko pamatojumu šim apgalvojumam, testējot nulles hipotēzi: ja neviennozīmīgas gramatiskās formas ir neitrāli saziņas līdzekļi, tad to relatīva biežuma atšķirība specializētajos valodas korpusos nav statistiski nozīmīga. Latviešu valodas korpusu analīze noraidīja nulles hipotēzi. Visbiežāk neviennozīmīgas gramatiskās formas parādās vēstījumos, kurus radījušas ar varu apveltītas sociālās institūcijas: likumos, doktora disertācijās un tiešsaistes mediju ziņās. Daiļliteratūrā, žurnālos un ikdienas sarunās ir vismazāk šādu gramatisko formu.

Issue 56 of the journal remains in the spotlight. This time, it features an article by Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte (Riga Stradins University) media and communication researcher Sergejs Kruks titled "Ambiguous Grammatical Forms in Latvian Corpora".

Ambiguous grammatical forms (AGF) combine the characteristics of different parts of speech, and it is up to the receiver to decide whether a word is, for example, a subject, object, or predicate. When the sender does not provide explicit cotextual and contextual cues for interpretation, she assumes no responsibility for the content of the message but reserves the right to reject the receiver’s interpretation as inadequate. In this capacity, AGF can be used to maintain hierarchical social relations between communicators. Hence, language is not a neutral means of communication, critical discourse analysis maintains.

This paper seeks statistical support for this claim by testing the null hypothesis: If AGF are neutral carriers of meaning, the difference in their relative frequencies in the specialized corpora is not statistically significant. Analysis of the Latvian language corpora rejected the null hypothesis. The highest incidence of AGF was found in messages created by powerful social institutions: laws, doctoral dissertations, and news from the Internet media. Literary works, magazines, and everyday conversations contain the least number of ambiguous forms.

This time, our focus is on an article by Gonzalo Preciado-Azanza, a dance researcher from the University of Zaragoza (Universidad de Zaragoza), titled "Embodying Spanishness in Latvian Ballet (1923–1941): Exoticism, Identity, and Propaganda", published in issue No. 55 of the journal.

Spanishness, the imagined perception of Spain, played a major role in interwar Latvian ballet. Author located forty-five Spanish-themed ballets, divertissements, and concert miniatures performed between 1923 and 1941. Dancing bodies act as cross-cultural archives that enable to comprehend the identities projected through inherited gestures.

This article proposes that Spanishness, perceived as an exotic and distant Other, may have enhanced the identity of the prewar Republic of Latvia. Author examined the ballets "Paquita", "Jota Aragonesa", "Don Quixote", "Boléro", and "Laurencia" through primary visual sources supported by Latvian press data. These case studies depicted a polyhedric image of Spain firmly based on Andalusian archetypes, intertwined with Orientalist motifs, and the jota of Aragon.

Spanishness can be seen as an integral aspect of the multicultural manifestation of Latvian interwar society. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 marked a turning point that increased interest in this multilayered mirror. In late 1930s with increasing political and military pressure of the Soviet Union, Spanishness evolved into a soft power strategy and, ultimately, became a Soviet propaganda tool.

Šoreiz mūsu uzmanības centrā ir Saragosas Universitātes (Universidad de Zaragoza) dejas pētnieka Gonsalo Presjado-Azansa (Gonzalo Preciado-Azanza) raksts "Spāņu ietekme latviešu baletā (1923–1941): eksotika, identitāte un propaganda", kas lasāms žurnāla 55. numurā.

Spāniskumam jeb iedomātajam Spānijas tēlam starpkaru periodā bija liela ietekme uz Latvijas baletu. No 1923. līdz 1941. gadam atradās 45 spāņu tematikai veltīti baleti, fragmenti un koncertminiatūras. Dejotāju ķermeni var uzskatīt par starpkultūru "arhīvu": tas palīdz izprast idejas un identitātes, kuras projicējas kā noteikti žesti.

Šajā rakstā izteikts pieņēmums, ka spāniskums, kas tika uztverts kā eksotisks un tāls "citādais", varēja veicināt pirmskara Latvijas Republikas identitātes veidošanos. Baleti "Pahita", "Aragonas hota", "Dons Kihots", "Bolero" un "Laurensija" pētīti, izmantojot vizuālos pirmavotus, kā arī Latvijas preses materiālus. Šajos baletos daudzšķautņains Spānijas tēls veidots, stingri balstoties uz Andalūzijas arhetipiem, kas savijušies ar orientālisma motīviem un Aragonas hotu.

Spāniskumu var uzskatīt par starpkaru Latvijas multikulturālās sabiedrības neatņemamu izpausmi. Spānijas pilsoņu kara sākums 1936. gadā iezīmēja pagrieziena punktu, pēc kura pastiprinājās interese par šo daudzveidīgo "spoguli". 30. gadu beigās, sakarā ar Padomju Savienības politiskā un militārā spiediena palielināšanos, spāniskums transformējās par "maigās varas" stratēģiju un galu galā izvērtās par padomju propagandas ieroci.

Šodien ieskatīsimies RTU Liepāja literatūrzinātnieces Linda Zulmane rakstā "Ceļš pārejas laikmetā Andrieva Niedras pasakā "Zemnieka dēls"".

Aktuāla tēma literatūrā allaž ir bijusi cilvēka dzīves jēgas meklējumi. Gadsimtu gaitā ir mainījušies meklējumu virzieni un ceļi, taču cilvēka prātu arvien ir nodarbinājusi doma par dzīves jēgas atrašanu, īpaši laikmetu griežos, pārmaiņu laikos un atsevišķa indivīda robežsituācijās.

Andrieva Niedras pasaka "Zemnieka dēls" (1902) ir rakstnieka pašatklāsme dzīves un nāves robežsituācijā, ārstējot tuberkulozi Davosas sanatorijā Šveicē. Izmantojot psiholoģisku, semiotisku un salīdzinošu skatījumu, iespējams raksturot 19. un 20. gadsimta mijas aktuālos jautājumus literārā pasakā. Pārejas laikmetu autors atklāj kā Zemnieka dēla dzīves vērojumu ceļojumā uz četrām debess pusēm. Ceļš – labirints veidots kā krusts, centrs ir mājas, no kurām doties pasaulē, izejot ceļus uz rietumiem, austrumiem, dienvidiem un ziemeļiem. Zemnieka dēla maldu un atziņu ceļš iezīmē pāreju no ierastā un zināmā uz nezināmo, svešo, ko veido vairākas bināras opozīcijas – savs/svešs, zeme/debesis, dzīvība/nāve, laime/katastrofa utt.

Pasaules izzināšana vienmēr saistīta ar piepūli, risku, neziņu, jo zināšanas ir jāiegūst, tās neatklājas pašas no sevis. Ceļa modelējumā savdabīgu niansi ienes laiktelpas tēlu "kodeļa – pavediens – kamols" jēgizpratne, tā ne tikai veido darba kompozicionālo saiti – pasaka sadalīta vairākās nodaļās jeb kodeļās, bet arī sapludina laika slāņus pasakas beigās, Zemnieka dēlam iztinot dzīves četrus kamolus un mirstot svešumā un vientulībā.

Today we’ll take a look at an article by RTU Liepāja literary scholar Linda Zulmane titled "The Road in the Age of Transition in Andrievs Niedra’s Fairytale "The Farmer’s Son"".

Andrievs Niedra’s fairytale "The Farmer’s Son" ("Zemnieka dēls", 1902) is the writer’s self-discovery in the marginal state of life and death during the treatment of tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Davos, Switzerland. The road of human spiritual exploration through the labyrinth of the transitional period of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries leads in different directions – searching for God, faith, religion and ethical norms, the self, happiness, and knowledge. The road of the farmer son’s delusions and insights marks a move from usual and known to unknown, alien, formed by several binary oppositions – own/foreign, earth/heaven, life/death, happiness/disaster, etc.

The positive and negative share of the binary opposition own/foreign (home/road) is not stable and unambiguous: the home is both a characteristic of peace and stability in opposition to the road as a symbol of insecurity, ignorance, and doubt and a symbol of stillness and quiescence, while the road means a spiritual activity.

This week’s spotlight is on the article “Herder’s ‘Frieden Frau’ and Simonas Daukantas’s Concept of the ‘Lithuanian Wife’”, authored by literary scholar Roma Bončkutė from Klaipeda University. It is published in issue No. 55 of the journal “Letonica”.

The article posits that Simonas Daukantas (Polish: Szymon Dowkont, 1793–1864), the first Lithuanian national historian, conceptualised the paradigm of the ‘Lithuanian Wife’ in his work on the history of the Lithuanian national culture by following the construct of the ‘Indische Frau’ / ‘Frieden Frau’ (‘Indian Woman’ / ‘Peace-Woman’), created by Johann Gotfried Herder.

The article first demonstrates that Daukantas, while living in Riga, had the opportunity to get acquainted with Herder’s works, which he read and summarised and/or quoted in his notebooks. It is believed that Daukantas, mainly adhering to Herder’s ideas and his own mother’s example, conceptualised the ‘Lithuanian Wife’ as assiduous, fair, wise, courageous, freedom-loving and responsible for instilling humanity in children, the family and the community. A woman’s close kinship with the environment, according to Daukantas, determines common sense, creativity and the ability to orientate oneself in life. This article postulates that Herder’s metaphor of the ‘Indische Frau’ / ‘Frieden Frau’, which he utilised to examine the question of eternal peace (pax sempiterna) and outline seven principles of intellectual, moral and legal development, influenced Daukantas when conceptualising the paradigm of the ‘Lithuanian Wife’.

Šīs nedēļas uzmanības centrā ir literatūras pētnieces Romas Bončkutės (Klaipeda University) raksts “Herdera ‘Frieden Frau’ un Simona Daukanta “lietuviešu sievas” jēdziens”, kas publicēts žurnāla “Letonica” 55. numurā.

Rakstā tiek izvirzīta tēze, ka Simons Daukants (lietuviešu: Simonas Daukantas; poļu: Szymon Dowkont, 1793-1864), pirmais lietuviešu vēsturnieks, savā darbā par lietuviešu nacionālās kultūras vēsturi konceptualizēja “lietuviešu sievas” paradigmu, sekojot Johana Gotfrīda Herdera (Johann Gotfried Herder) radītajam “Indische Frau” / “Frieden Frau” (indiešu sieviete / Miera Sieva) jēdzienam.

Rakstā vispirms parādīts, ka Daukantam, dzīvojot Rīgā, bija iespēja iepazīties ar Herdera darbiem, kurus viņš lasīja, apkopoja un/vai citēja savās piezīmju kladēs. Domājams, ka Daukants, galvenokārt sekojot Herdera idejām un savas mātes piemēram, konceptualizēja “lietuviešu sievu” kā centīgu, taisnīgu, gudru, drosmīgu, brīvību mīlošu un atbildīgu par cilvēcības ieaudzināšanu bērnos, ģimenē un sabiedrībā. Sievietes ciešā radniecība ar apkārtējo vidi, pēc Daukanta domām, nosaka veselo saprātu, radošumu un spēju orientēties dzīvē. Šajā rakstā postulēts, ka Herdera indiešu sievietes / Miera Sievas metafora, ko viņš izmantoja, lai aplūkotu jautājumu par mūžīgo mieru (pax sempiterna) un izklāstītu septiņus intelektuālās, morālās un tiesiskās attīstības principus, ietekmēja Daukantu, konceptualizējot “lietuviešu sievas” paradigmu.

Šodien tuvāk aplūkosim Ventspils Augstskola valodnieka Jāņa Veckrāča un Latvijas Nacionālā bibliotēka / National Library of Latvia vēsturnieka Mārtiņa Mintaura koprakstu "Vēstures (terminoloģiskais) diskurss un dažu pamatterminu vēsture latviešu valodā".

Vēstures metadiskursam – pašas vēstures zinātnes vēstures aprakstam – vēstures diskursā lietojumā ir īpaša nozīme. Historiogrāfija nav iedomājama bez valodas vides – vēstures rakstīšanai lietotie termini ir tikpat svarīgi kā vēstures zinātnes teorijas un metodoloģijas jautājumi. Raksta mērķis ir noskaidrot, kā un kāpēc tika radīta vēstures zinātnes terminoloģija latviešu valodā, kādi ir galvenie vēstures terminu leksikogrāfiskie avoti un kā Latvijā veidojies vēstures terminoloģiskais diskurss, kā arī iezīmēt dažu vēstures pamatterminu lietojuma vēsturi latviešu valodā. Nozīmīgs raksta mērķis – sniegt arī vēstures termina jēdzienisko skaidrojumu.

Vēstures diskursa pirmsākumus latviešu valodā sarakstītajos un iespiestajos tekstos var konstatēt kopš 18. gadsimta otrās puses, bet latviešu valodas vēstures terminu apkopošanas centieni vēstures diskursa kontekstā aizsākās 19. gadsimtā. Ieskats vairāku vēstures pamatterminu lietojumu vēsturē apliecina visai ilgstošu un sarežģītu terminrades procesu, kurā vērojams interferences izraisīts citvalodu vārdu atspulgs, piemēram, kalku formā, kā arī rakstības, vārdformu un vārdu vēsturisko un formālo variantu svārstīgs, nesecīgs un nereti paralēls lietojums.

Today we will take a closer look at the joint article by Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (Ventspils Augstskola) linguist Jānis Veckrācis and Latvijas Nacionālā bibliotēka / National Library of Latvia historian Mārtiņš Mintaurs "The (Terminological) Discourse of History and Emergence of Some Basic Terms in the Latvian Language”

The historical metadiscourse – the description of the history of the science of history itself – occupies a special place in the discourse of history. Historiography is impossible without a focus on what terms were used in the writing of history, since the terms chosen by historians reveal the level of conceptualisation of past research. The aim of this paper is to clarify how and why the terminology of historical science was created in the Latvian language, which are the main lexicographic sources of history terms and how the terminological course on history terms developed in Latvia, as well as to outline the history of the use of some key history terms. A significant aim of the study is to provide a definition of the concept of history terms.

The origins of historical discourse in Latvian texts can be traced back to the second half of the eighteenth century; the initial efforts to collect Latvian history terms in the context of historical discourse date back to the nineteenth century. An insight into the history of the use of several key history terms illustrates a long and complex terminological process, with apparent interference from other languages, e. g. in the form of calques, as well as unstable, incoherent and often parallel use of varying orthography, word forms and formal lexical variants.

This week’s spotlight is on the article “Māmiņ’ vaicā sav’ dēliņu: Translating a Latvian War Folk Song into Modern Greek (on the Occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution)”, authored by Professor Panagiotis G. Krimpas of Democritus University of Thrace (Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης). Published in issue No. 55 of the journal “Letonica”.

Although Modern Greek literary translations from lesser-used languages do appear from time to time, Greek translatology does not pay much attention to such language pairs. Starting from ethnomusicologists’ assumption that the Baltic (especially Lithuanian and Latvian) folk music tradition is musically and thematically related to that of the Balkans, this article case-studies a poetic Modern Greek translation that Panagiotis G. Krimpas made of the Latvian folk song "Māmiņ’ vaicā sav’ dēliņu".

In 2021, when Panagiotis G. Krimpas translated it, Greece was celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, and the song in fact resembled various Modern Greek revolutionary folk songs in remarkable aspects. After a brief introduction to various aspects of Balto-Balkan cultural relations and the identity of this particular song, Panagiotis G. Krimpas retrospectively reflects upon his translation process in poetic, linguistic, translational and pragmatic terms, in an attempt to highlight one more instance when the domestication vs. foreignization dichotomy is virtually neutralized and contributes to a Greek-Baltic cultural dialogue.

Šonedēļ uzmanības centrā raksts “Māmiņ’ vaicā sav’ dēliņu: latviešu kara tautasdziesmas atdzejošana mūsdienu grieķu valodā (saistībā ar Grieķu revolūcijas 200. gadadienu)”, kura autors ir Trāķijas Dēmokrita Universitātes (Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης) profesors Panajotis G. Krimpas. Publicēts žurnāla “Letonica” 55. numurā.

Lai gan jaungrieķu literārie tulkojumi no retāk lietotām valodām parādās laiku pa laikam, grieķu tulkojumzinātne parasti nepievērš lielu uzmanību šādiem valodu pāriem. Izejot no etnomuzikologu pieņēmuma, ka baltu (īpaši lietuviešu un latviešu) tautas mūzikas tradīcija ir muzikāli un tematiski tuva Balkānu tradīcijai, šajā rakstā ir aplūkots latviešu tautasdziesmas "Māmiņ’ vaicā sav’ dēliņu" tulkojums jaungrieķu valodā.

2021. gadā, kad autors to atdzejoja, Grieķija svinēja Grieķu revolūcijas 200. gadadienu, un dziesma daudzējādā ziņā patiešām atgādināja vairākas jaungrieķu revolucionārās tautasdziesmas. Pēc īsa ievada dažādos Baltijas un Balkānu kultūras sakaru aspektos un konkrētās dziesmas identitātē rakstā retrospektīvi tiek aplūkots tulkošanas process poētikas, lingvistikas, tulkošanas un pragmatikas aspektā, mēģinot izcelt vēl vienu gadījumu, kad dihotomija starp pielāgošanu un svešādošanu ir praktiski izlīdzināta un veicina Grieķijas un Baltijas kultūras dialogu.

Šonedēļ ielūkosimies LU Literatūras, folkloras un mākslas institūts pētnieces Ilze Ļaksa-Timinska rakstā "Mēģinot izprast 20. gadsimta 20. gadu padomju latviešu identitāti. Roberta Eidemana garā stāsta "Ielenktie" imagoloģisks lasījums".

Roberta Eidemaņa (1895–1937) 1925. gadā Maskavā izdotais garais stāsts "Ielenktie" ir viens no latviešu padomju literatūras pirmajiem būtiskajiem prozas tekstiem. Tas ne tikai iezīmē jaunu tematisko lauku, ideoloģisko pozīciju un formālu rakstības paradigmu latviešu literatūrā, bet arī netieši reflektē par to, kas un kāds ir padomju latvietis. Imagologs Daniels Anrī Pažo (Daniel Henri Pageaux, 1939) uzskatīja, ka, rakstot un runājot par "citiem", mēs patiesībā atklājam "sevi". Ņemot vērā šo premisu un imagoloģijas teorētiskos aspektus un metodoloģiju, raksta fokusā ir garais stāsts "Ielenktie", analizējot etnosus un tautības jeb etnotipus tekstā. Taču, ņemot vērā padomju izteikto internacionālismu, rakstā ir mēģinājums izmantot imagoloģisko lasījumu, šķirot ne tikai tradicionālos etnotipus, kas balstīti tautībās, bet arī identificējot un šķirot tēlus pēc politiskās un ideoloģiskās pārliecības.

Raksta mērķis ir caur "cita" attēlojumiem jeb heteroattēliem identificēt, ko iespējams pateikt par tekstā iekļauto pašidentitāti, tādējādi caur teksta naratīviem iezīmējot iespējamo 20. gadsimta 20. gadu padomju latviešu identitāti.

This week we will look into the article by Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art researcher Ilze Ļaksa-Timinska "Towards an understanding of Soviet Latvian identity in the 1920s. An Imagological Reading of the Long Story 'The Surrounded' by Roberts Eidemanis".

The long story "The Surrounded" ("Ielenktie") by Roberts Eidemanis (1895–1937), published in Moscow in 1925, is one of the first primary prose texts of Latvian Soviet literature. It marks a new thematic field, ideological position, and formal writing paradigm in Latvian literature, and it indirectly reflects who and what a Soviet Latvian is. The imagologist Daniel Henri Pageaux (1939) believed that by writing and talking about "others", we are revealing "ourselves". Considering this premise and the theoretical aspects and methodology of imagology, this article focuses on the long story "The Surrounded", analyzing the ethnos and nationalities (genotypes) present in the text. However, given the Soviet's pronounced internationalism – the article attempts to use an imagological reading, sorting not only traditional ethnotypes based on nationalities but also identifying and sorting the characters in the text by political and ideological persuasion.

The article aims to identify what can be said about the self-identity embedded in the text through representations of the "other" (hetero-images), thus mapping a possible identity for Soviet Latvians in the 1920s through the narratives of the text.
