In this week's episode, Professor Godfrey Baldacchino, Malta's first thematic ambassador for islands and small states, discusses how small nations can have outsized global impact. Based at University of Malta, Prof. Baldacchino explores the strategic advantages of small states in international diplomacy and highlights islands' leadership in sustainability efforts, particularly in addressing climate change. 🏝️🌿
The subject of this International Episode is particularly relevant to our Luxembourg-based listeners - food for thought when it comes to grappling with smallness!

SciLux Negotiating Narratives and Public History
🇪🇺 Today we embark on a new journey exploring European researchers and their contributions to science and society. Our first European guest, Tina De Gendt, a public historian, curator, writer and journalist recently received the European Heritage Europa Nostra Award for the Square Kilometre Project coordinated and funded by #STAM Ghent City Museum and the Ghent Heritage Cell 🏅
🏙️ As a public historian, Tina is reshaping the way we perceive history by engaging directly with communities and involving them in the historical narrative. One of the key themes Tina discusses is the concept of "negotiating the past." This methodology goes beyond simply presenting multiple perspectives; it encourages active debate and discussion among community members. Her work in the Square Kilometre Project exemplifies this approach, as she collaborates with locals to uncover the rich tapestry of stories within Ghent's diverse neighbourhoods.
For those interested in how public history can transform our understanding of the past and present, Tina de Gendt's insights are invaluable. Her approach not only makes history accessible but also relevant to today's diverse urban landscapes. By listening to her story, we can all learn how to engage more deeply with history and, in turn, with each other.
🎧Tune in to the latest episode to explore these themes and more. Discover how public history can be a powerful tool for community engagement and social change. Let Tina's story inspire you to look at history through a new lens and to see the potential for connection and understanding in our shared past.

🎙️ In the first episode of the new season of my podcast , my guest, Prof. Anne Grünewald and I got to talk a lot about #mitochondria. And except for discussing that they are more than 'just' the powerhouse of the cell, we also talked about their shape and colour.
🔊 The full discussion about mitochondria, neuroscience and Parkinson's disease you can find on all major podcasting platforms and on SciLux brand new website.
*The photo with mitochondria that I show in the video was taken by Ilaria Goglia. Thank you for sharing it with me!

What if we gave an opportunity to talk about science to a group of students?
That’s exactly what the project Sounds of Science was about. In this FNR-funded (PSP-Classic) project we teamed up with Lycée Aline Mayrisch to help students to make podcasts about biology.
During the Project Week at school, the students visited the Musée de l’Homme in Paris where they got inspiration and information about one of the chosen subjects: brain development, feelings, neurological diseases and art. All in all, 5 podcasts were produced and in this special SciLux Original episode we present fragments of all of them.
This is really science communication at its best – as the project included both some theory as well as a lot of practice leading to becoming better creators of science content and most importantly better consumers of it.
We really couldn’t be prouder of the results – available in episode 21 on all major podcasting platforms.
We’d like to thank Carol Lunkes, the biology teacher who coordinated the project as well as Judith Reicherzer who helped out at various stages – including a great presentation about journalism! Last but not least, big thanks to Mattia Rheim, our technician, and our external reviewer.

💡 Here we go with the first technology in Luxembourg episode and what an episode it is! 💡
Angelika Bocian-Jaworska, the founder of Äerd Lab, is an architect who is on a quest to find perfect, locally-sourced organic materials for 3D-printing. You can already buy her mugs, candles and vases, but it's just the beginning. She is currently researching 3D-printing urban furniture and aims to move on to houses.
🌱 Our discussion also focused on alternative materials such as wood and eggshell powder, we talked about the current state of architecture and even sand in United Arab Emirates.

🏅 The @fnr.lu awards are a chance to get to know last year's biggest scientific projects in Luxembourg. They are given in four categories: Outstanding Scientific Achievement, Outstanding Mentor, Outstanding PhD Thesis and Outstanding Promotion of Science to the General Public.
➡️ This year we had a chance to celebrate a discovery of a special #PainRelief compound, looking at molecules from the #thermodynamics side, mentoring in #MaterialsResearch @list_science and a transmedia project @colonia.lu @c2dh_lu (@uni.lu). For us personally it was also the first time we were quite up-to-date with all the projects. Congratulations to all and see you next year!

🧪 It was a real pleasure to sit down with Dr. Kathleen Mommaerts from the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg at @lih_luxembourg and chat about sample preparation, storage, variability and the Rosalind Franklin Society Award she got recently (@rosalindfranklinsociety).
🙃 It was also great to joke around a little. Here’s a sample of our not-always-very-serious discussion. More in the full episode that is waiting for you to be discovered wherever you get your podcasts.
‼️ To sum up, yes, people are interested in doing loads of different things 😉

🎓👥 Curious about mentorship in academia? We sure were, and that's why our first episode of the new season features two experienced mentors: Prof. Simone Niclou, the Vice-Rector for Research at the @uni.lu, and Prof. Andreas Fickers, the Director of the @c2dh_lu. Simone and Andreas defined mentorship, shared their own mentee journeys, and revealed some intriguing comments and questions they encountered as mentors.
There was so much to discuss that the pub quiz question will have to wait for the next episode! Stay tuned. 📚🤝 Link in bio.
