Study Tour on Integrated Water Resources Management Begins in Lesotho
Lesotho, Maseru - A study tour aimed at promoting effective transboundary water resources management and climate-informed approaches commenced on Tuesday in Maseru, Lesotho. Representatives from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regions have come together to exchange knowledge and experiences in the field of Integrated Water Resource Management and Development (IWRM&D) in the Lake Victoria Basin.
The study tour, organized by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC), seeks to facilitate the implementation of sustainable development, management, and equitable utilization of water resources. It focuses on three key strategic interventions: supporting IWRM investments, coordinating basin-wide water data and information, and strengthening the capacity of relevant institutions involved in water resources management.
The German Development Cooperation is also actively involved in supporting the integrated management of transboundary water resources in the Lake Victoria Basin and the East African Community through two projects. The first project, the LVB Integrated Water Resources Management Programme (LVB IWRMP), aims to improve water quality in the basin through strategic investments. The second project is the GIZ Technical Cooperation (TC) support, which focuses on strengthening the LVBC in IWRM and institutional framework development.
During the week-long study tour, delegates will visit the ReNOKA watershed rehabilitation project in the lowlands and the Katse Dam in the highlands of Lesotho. Mr. Motoho Maseatile, the Director of the Water Affairs Department at the Ministry of Natural Resources, warmly welcomed all the participants and emphasized the importance of the tour in exchanging information and ideas. The agenda includes discussions on Lesotho's national initiatives, such as the Lesotho Highlands water project, whi
