Meet the Ndebele Tribe ,they have a rich history in South Africa, originally part of the amaNdebele. They moved away from the Nguni-speaking people in the 1600s and settled in what is now Polokwane and Mokopane. Internal conflicts later split the tribe into Northern and Southern Ndebele.
In the 1820s, a group of Zulus, led by Mzilikazi, joined the Southern Ndebele, influencing the tribe's dominance in the Highveld region. They faced conflict with Boer voortrekkers in 1836, leading to migration into present-day Zimbabwe.
Socially, the Ndebele have hierarchical structures, with tribal heads and family councils. Women wear symbolic ornaments, and their art, including wall paintings and beadwork, reflects their identity. Matrimonial customs involve rituals and the exchange of adorned marriage blankets.
Traditional healers, known as izangoma, were important for countering illnesses caused by external forces. The Ndebele's history and culture highlight migration, resilience, and vibrancy, contributing to South Africa's diverse heritage.
