Banjor, August 4, 2024 – The Banjor community was shaken last night as news broke of a tragic incident involving a police officer and a young Muslim man. At approximately 9:00 PM, Inspector David S. Fayiah allegedly shot and k!lled Moanoba Mohammed.

According to eyewitness reports, the incident occurred after Mohammed, also known as "Lil Manoba," insulted Fayiah's mother, prompting the officer to react emotionally and discharge his weapon. Fatumata Jejebah Massaquoi, the sister of the deceased, took to social media to express her outrage and seek justice for her brother. She accused the police authorities of disseminating false information to the public regarding the circumstances of Mohammed's death.

Supporting her claim, Lord Alpha G. Gray also posted about the incident on Facebook, stating,

"An inspector of the LNP named David S. Fayiah shot and killed a Muslim man identified as Moanoba Mohammed. This sad incident occurred in Banjor at 9 p.m. last night. The regime is now targeting our Muslim people. Stop Islamophobia!”

As the community grapples with this loss, many are calling for an immediate and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served. The incident has sparked concerns about rising tensions and alleged targeting of the Muslim community.

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability within the police force, as well as a broader discussion about community relations and respect.

In a significant victory against drug trafficking, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has intercepted a substantial consignment of drugs at the Bo Waterside Border in Grand Cape Mount County. The operation, which was prompted by a tip-off, led to the seizure of the shipment as it was being transported from Sierra Leone into Liberia.

Authorities have estimated the street value of the confiscated drugs to be over $216,000 USD. This major bust underscores the ongoing efforts of the LDEA to combat drug trafficking and enhance the safety and security of Liberia's borders.

Further investigations are currently underway to identify those responsible for the shipment and to prevent future smuggling attempts.

President Boakai Reactivates the Economic Management Team and Appoints Acting CBL Governor

Wednesday, July 31, 2024

Executive Mansion, Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has reactivated the Economic Management Team. The Team is expected to ensure coordination of the Government’s fiscal and monetary policy, the acceleration of economic reforms in building a robust and resilient economy and strengthening existing regulations as well as improve oversight functions of Ministries, Agencies and Commissions.

The Team will also serve as a think tank on economic matters, proffer solutions that would tackle economic uncertainties, especially immediate policy interventions and improve the implementation of the Public Financial Management (PFM) law in ensuring transparency and accountability for the attainment of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Growth.

The Economic Management Team (EMT) will be chaired by the President. Members are as follows:

1. Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Co-Chair

2. Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, Member

3. Commissioner General of the Liberia Revenue Authority, Member

4. Minister of Commerce and Industry, Member and

5. Chairman of National Investment Commission, Member

6. The Economic Advisers to the President, Members

In a related development, President Boakai has named Mr. Henry F. Saamoi as Acting Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL).

These appointments take immediate effect.

President Boakai calls on those appointed to continue to demonstrate diligence, commitment, integrity, professionalism, and loyalty in service to country.

There were thousands of Liberians crying out for an end to corruption and demanding penalties for anyone found engaging in such acts. However, many doubted that their pleas would lead to immediate action. They had hoped to see measures taken on both the UP government and the last CDC government.

Currently, it is unclear whether the recent arrests are part of a genuine effort to address corruption or simply a witch hunt. Some of those who initially called for justice are now expressing reservations, suggesting that the timing might not be right.

This leaves many wondering when real change will come for the people of Liberia. Political interest leaves the start of corruption unnoticed. Where's the new Liberia when only the middle is being cleaned not the top?

The arrest of Mike Jabateh, the Assistant Minister for Urban Affairs at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Liberia, follows his issuance of death threats against Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah.
