At-Risk Youth Graduate from Rehabilitation Program Initiated by George Weah Led Government

(For Immediate Release - Monrovia, Friday, April 12, 2024)

Yesterday, April 11, 2024, Liberians witnessed the graduation of 126 At-Risk-Youths from the At-Risk-Youth Rehabilitation Program initiated by the George Weah led Government. It can be recalled that in 2019, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports began discussions with our development partners, specifically the One UN System for the establishment of a comprehensive program to Rehabilitate our At-Risk-Youths. In 2022, a joint technical committee was established by the GoL and the One UN System to develop a joint concept document for the Rehabilitation of At-Risk-Youth. On February 3, 2023, the Cabinet reviewed and approved the joint At-Risk-Youth Concept Document presented to Cabinet by Minister D. Zeogar Wilson.

On August 21, 2023, the Technical Working Group headed by the Ministry of Health under the approval of the Joint Steering Committee jointly Co-chaired by the Minister of Youth and Sports and the UN Resident Coordinator began a voluntary recruitment of At-Risk-Youth in four counties: Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Margibi and Bomi. The recruitment witnessed over four hundred At-Risk-Youths being voluntarily recruited for detoxification and rehabilitation. By the end of President Weah's term, we had 186 At-Risk-Youth in 8 centers undergoing rehabilitation after detoxification and were scheduled for graduation in the 2nd week of February 2024.

This information was contained in our Turnover Note and the transitional team headed by Dr. Kimmie Weeks was fully briefed about this program. We want to thank all of our Service Providers, our Secretariat, the Technical Working Group and members of the Joint Steering Committee as well as the graduating class for a job well done.
This program was 100% GoL funded. However, we were able to mobilize 3M and signed an agreement with the One UN System through the Peace Building funds for this program for three years before we left office.

โ€ฆ..Maintained as Central Pillar in National Development Strategy

MONROVIA, April 9, 2024 - Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Minister of Agriculture, reaffirmed the pivotal role of agriculture in Liberia's developmental trajectory during discussions held today. Recognizing agriculture as a primary driver of employment, income generation, and rural sustainability, Minister Nuetah underscored its significance within the nation's overarching goals.

"While acknowledging the challenges faced by the agricultural sector, we remain resolute in our commitment to address them," stated Minister Nuetah, describing agriculture as the "lowest hanging fruit" in stimulating economic growth. He further highlighted the government's dedication, alongside partner support, in revitalizing the sector and enhancing the capabilities of local farmers, technicians, and smallholders.

The minister's remarks came during a visit on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, by a delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB), led by Mr. Ibrahim Amadou, Chief Economist and Vice President overseeing Governance. Accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the delegation sought to familiarize themselves with the operations of the Ministry of Agriculture in Congo Town.

Dr. Nuetah emphasized the necessity of establishing robust production units to attract investments, fostering income generation, and facilitating capacity-building initiatives, processing, and marketing activities tailored to Liberia's specific agricultural commodities. "Though challenges may arise, our focus remains steadfast on empowering our farmers through capacity-building and training," concluded the Minister.

Mr. Ibrahim Amadou elaborated on the purpose of their visit, stating, "We are collaborating closely with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to identify areas for support and formulate a new project." He emphasized their commitment to the preparatory mission aimed at designing initiatives aligned with Liberia's agricultural development objectives.

Monrovia, Liberia - April 10, 2024 -The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) in consultation with the management of Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) has announced new price ceiling for petroleum products on the Liberian Market.

According to a price circular jointly signed by the Minister of Commerce & Industry and the Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, the wholesale prices for diesel and gasoline are US$4.10 and US$4.73 respectively while the retail pump prices for diesel and gasoline are US$4.38 or its Liberian dollar equivalent of LRD845.00 and US$5.01 or its Liberian dollars equivalent of LRD$970.00 respectively.

The current price of gasoline reflects a five United States Cents (US$0.05) reduction while the price of diesel fuel remains unchanged. The authorities of both the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company said that the current changes in the price structure for petroleum products on the Liberian market is based on internationally prevailing market situations and the growing levels of insecurity along major shipping routes that have increased other exogenous costs such as insurance, freight and risk premiums charges that are influencing domestic petroleum prices.

As a consequence of the abnormal security conditions in and around oil producing countries and along major international shipping routes, the Government of Liberia has taken key steps in avoiding the global petroleum price volatility from adversely affecting the livelihood of Liberians. Some of which are issuance of an Executive Order # 128 by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai suspending US$0.20 surcharge on petroleum products.

In furtherance of the presidentโ€™s action, the Board of Directors and Management of LPRC have reduced the storage and handling fees for both diesel fuel and gasoline, and have also suspended a 2% financing cost on diesel fuel and gasoline respectively. These interventions which have resulted to Liberia having the lowest price level for both diesel and gasoline in the Mano River basin and other countries in West Africa will remain enforced pending the outcome of the price on the global oil market.

The MoCI and LPRC Inspectorate Team will closely monitor the approved ceiling prices to avoid arbitrary hike in the pump prices of diesel and gasoline on the local market.
