The Foundation for Community Initiatives (FCI) Officer in River Cess County is urging women of various Village Saving groups trained by her organization to sustained the program when the project officially ends.

FCI is a local based Non-governmental organization that is working in several counties of Liberia implementing different projects.Speaking with reporters Tuesday, July 11, 2023, Madam Hawa Varney said the dream of her group is to see the women maintaining the village saving groups after the project shall have to come to an end. Madam varney added that the aim of FCI to established village saving groups and continues to empower them with the necessary trainings and finance throughout the project is to make them self-sufficient to avoid them being depended on their male counterparts.

“We grouped the women and provided them with some cash in the form of grant so that they can make business and have money on their own because that is one way we can tackle the many acts of violence against them” madam Hawa Dunor Varney.

She added if the women get the necessary economic empowerment, it will pave the way to eradicating Gender and Sexual Based Violence from the Liberian society, something she says is greatly affecting development with direct impact on women, youths and other vulnerable groups who are not economically strong to resist the influence of money.

Madam Varney recalled a recent capacity building training for youth and women held in June in Yarpah Town, River Cess County that brought together over 40 participants which she described as one of the many eye openers that her group been doing for those captured under their current project.

The FCI is presently working with women groupings they organized into Village Savings in three counties of Liberia including River Cess, Sinoe and Grand Kru under the ENOUGH PROJECT sponsored by the European Union. The ENOUGH PROJECT is a five-year project that is jointly implemented by five Non-Governmental organization which includes FCI, Her Voice and OXFAM with each group targeting a specific component. In 2021 the Foundation for Community Initiative launched a Village Saving for over 200 women in four major communities in River Cess County including Little Liberia, Charlie Town, James Town and Logan Town and Fen River and Nyorwein administrative districts respectively.

A grant of $400,000 Liberian Dollars was shared across the groups for business purpose following weeks of training on how the mange the cash and sustain the groups. In addition to the village saving groups, FCI is also empowering women in River Cess to engage in agricultural activities aimed at helping them generate their own money to avoid them being abused.

Women of Sayah Town in Gbasaw clan were grouped and have been trained by the group to grow crops for marketing to improve their financial capacity, according to the FCI Gender and Justice officer.

Zammie Town, Rivercess County-Citizensh Chiefdom in Central Rivercess Administrative district are expected to shortly benefit the construction of a modern radio station.

The construction of the community which is expected to kickoff with a ground breaking ceremony on Saturday, November 27 is funded paid by EJ&J/Brilliant Marju as benefit to the community from a logging agreement.

In November of 2018, the citizens of Kploh represented by the CFMB signed a five year Social Agreement that grants the investor the right to harvest log from the community forest up to 2023.

The signing of the five years third party logging agreement was witnessed by representatives of the Forestry Development Authority, local leaders including Central Rivercess Administrative District commissioner Abraham Barkay, Central "C" Statutory District Superintendent Marcus Blah and Rivercess County Assistant Superintendent for Development Amos Somah.

According to sources close to the Zialu and Teekpeh Community Forest Management Body (Z&T CFMB), the committee has completed the purchase of all broadcast equipment pending the construction of the building that will host the radio station.

Our source informed us that over $35,000USD was withdrawn from the community account to undertake the project.

Prior to the November 27 ground breaking, citizens of the community witnessed the clearing of the site where the radio station will be constructed in Zammie Town on Thursday, November 25, 2021.

It will be the second time that citizens of Kploh Chiefdom will be breaking ground for the construction of a radio station.

In April 2016, the citizens of the Chiefdom through the Kploh Ministers Association (KMA), a Christian organization broke ground to construct a radio station.

Said planned died as money generated to construct the station was allegedly squandered by the church leaders.

Single Handedly Embarks on Waiting Home Completion.

A businesswoman residing in ITI Community, Rivercess County is single handedly completing a Maternity Waiting home at the ITI Community Clinic, upper Yarnee Statutory District.

The construction of the ITI clinic Maternity Waiting home started in early 2017 and was funded by the County through County and Social Development Funds.

The project like several other projects received the full amount allocated in the 2015 county sitting but was abandoned at window level in the same 2017.

It was one of three waiting homes that were budgeted for by citizens during the December 9, 2015 county sitting.

A total of $60,000USD was allotted and released from the county's account to construct the three Maternity Waiting Homes.

Frustratingly, none of the three waiting homes is completed with full payments made.

Bearwor District Commissioner Emmanuel Gbae confirmed the completion of the public project by the business woman, Madam Lucy Belleh.

Madam Belleh is a Nimbian who migrated to Rivercess for the purpose of making business.

She has been in the county for nearly 20 years; settling in different communities, mainly mining areas.

" Madam Lucy Belleh, a business woman living in our community has taken the initiative to finish the project at her own expense". Commissioner Emmanuel Gbae confirmed.

Commissioner Gbae praised Madam Belleh for seeing the need to alleviate the old age problem of pregnant women who come from far communities having difficulty when they are nearing their time of delivery and get to the facility.

The ITI Community Clinic is the only health facility in Bearwor Administrative District, a district with a population of 7,479 according to the 2008 population census report.

Besides residents of the district, the clinic also caters to accident or emergency cases along the Sinoe-Rivercess high way.

As the new academic year 2021/2022 is just few weeks away from commencement, students of the J. L Travers Kindergarten and Elementary School in Jayzohn, Central Cestos, Rivercess County will not be sitting on the bare floor to learn.

Like you can see in the pictures below, ECE/ECD students of J. L Travers school were forced to sit on the bare cement floor and mats because there were no sits to accommodate them.

The J. L. Travers Elementary School is one of five public schools in the Cestos City limit.

It accommodated or enrolled a total of 275 students during the 2020/2021 school year.

Following an RBS report in July 2021, Rivercess County District #2 Representative Byron W. Zahnwea intervened and donated 25 pieces of desks few days ago.

Representative Zahnwea in a recent interview on RBS Radio said the 25 pieces of desks delivered to the school recently was an initial intervention in solving the issue of seating capacity at the government run elementary school.

This means the school will have something to hope on while national government is yet to come in.

TWO YEARS OLD
STABBED 18 TIMES TO DEATH IN RIVERCESS

BY: Aaron W. Geezay/Christian T. Chea
AUGUST 11, 2021

Police in Rivercess County have launched a hunt for a man identified as Friday Zian commonly known as Bill after he allegedly stabbed a two (2) year old girl to death.

Bill as he is commonly called reportedly stabbed the teen (Hannah Pewee) with a knife 18 times on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in the ITI Community near the Rivercess-Sinoe border before escaping the crime scene, according to jurors report.

According to Yarkpazua Pewee, the victim's father who is also a pastor of a church in the ITI Community, the Bill (Friday Ziah) who is a member of his church stabbed his daughter he failed to give a money he has been keeping for the perpetrator.

Pastor Pewee is the pastor of Amazing Fire Ministry, a church newly established in the ITI Community.

ITI is a major commercial area with gold mining and pitsawing as major sources of income.

Due to its commercial nature, it hosts people from all parts of Liberia and other ECOWAS countries.

Explaining to RBS radio FM 99.3 on Wednesday, Pastor Yarkpazua Pewee told reporters that while he and some other members of his church were sitting in his yard, the alleged perpetrator walked in and asked (he pastor Pewee) to give his money he had been keeping.

But according to him, his response to Friday Zian was I do not currently have your money available.

While in such exchange, Pewee said the alleged criminal grabbed his two years old daughter and began to stabbed her with the knife.

Pewee did not state whether Friday Zian, the alleged killer walked in his yard with the knife he used to stabbed the child or it was obtained from his yard.

Emmanuel Gbae, Commissioner of Bearwor Administrative District termed the act as devilish.

He declared Wednesday as a non working holiday in the ITI Community in observance of the two years old child's death.

Mr. Gbae said it beats his imagination to see one human being slaughtering another while others stand by without apprehending said person.

The Bearwor Administrative District Commissioner meanwhile called on the Liberia National Police to do a proper investigation in bringing to book anyone linked to the death.

ITI in March of this year witnessed the vandalizing of the Liberia National Police deport in the community that hosts the joint security at the border town following the discovery of the dead body of a man who went missing for a week close to the police station.

14/07/2021

We are here at the J. L Travers Elementary School in Jayzohn Upper Cestos where students are sitting on the bear floor to learn.

Mr. J. Togar Seekpee is the Principal here.
