NAYMOTE Partners for Democratic Development Releases 2022 Assessment Report on Liberia Legislative System

NAYMOTE Partners for Democratic Development has released the second edition of the Legislature Digest report.

The report presents findings from an assessment and monitoring of the Legislature of Liberia in 2022.

The Legislative Digest is an annual publication of the institution fostering Legislative Openness, responsiveness, and Accountability in Liberia.

The second edition of the Legislative Digest covers the period from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022.

The Legislative Digest report indicates that the Legislature held 167 sittings in 2022, of which 106 (63%) were regular sittings, 36 (22%) were secret/executive sittings, 9 (5%) were special sittings, and 16 (10%) were extraordinary sittings.

There were 29 public hearings held during the year. All secret sittings were held by the House of Representatives in 2022.

The report stated that the Liberia Legislature in 2022 enacted a total of 53 bills of which 35 bills originated from the Executive/presidency, 12 bills from the House of Representatives, and 6 bills from the Senate.

A total budget of USD 64,383,926 was allocated to the Legislature in 2022 to carry out their functions and the report furthered that the legislature failed to present final financial reports for the use of the funds they received.

The assessment report revealed that the Legislature from 2018-2022, passed 182 bills of which 43 constituting 24% originated from the House of Representatives (11%) from the Senate, 119 constituting 65% from the Executive/Presidency, and the annual budget of the Legislature during the period from 2018 – 2022, amounted to US$228,666,183.00.

According to NAYMOTE's second edition report, stated that the number of ‘secret’ sessions reduced in 2022 when compared to 2021, but it is still striking that more than one-third of legislative deliberative sittings were held in ‘secret’ or executive sessions, and 53 bills were enacted in 2022 whereas 29 bills were passed in 2021 which shows that more bills were enacted in 2022 than in 2021.

The report furthered that, it was impossible to access reports of ministries and agencies at the legislature apparently because the ministries and agencies have not been submitting periodic reports to that body since 2018.

Office of the National Secretary General

For Immediate Release

Monrovia, Liberia- January 13, 2023: Unity Party terms as a diabolical lie, the statement from the Government of Liberia that suggests it has “initiated contacts with family members of the former Vice President and offered to help in whatever way they deem necessary…..”

It can be recalled that a certain fellow on the January 12, 2023 edition of Spoon FM night show that goes by the moniker Keff, reported that President George Weah called the Former Vice President and Standard Bearer of the Unity Party and offered to fly him out of the country. The Unity Party and family members of Amb. Boakai refuted the criminally contrived propaganda as the public severely descended on such childish, irresponsible and desperate attempt by the Presidency to play politics with a momentarily unwell condition of a statesman.

The Unity Party considers the government’s release as yet another callous attempt to save face and create the false impression that Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s health condition is anything very serious and, that he is unable to pay his medical bills.

The Unit Party hereby informs the Public that the failed and visibly out-of-favor government of George Weah has made no official contact with any member of the JNB family, neither has any family member requested the government for assistance.

Unity Party assures the public that the man poised to rescue Liberia at the hand of the failed CDC government is in a positive state of health and mentally alert to hit the ground running when elected as President of the republic of Liberia in 2024.

The Unity Party warns the government and its surrogates to desist from the desperate and heartless effort to use the health condition of a statesman to redeem their lost image.

No doubt, the CDC government has failed to deliver on its promises; the man on a mission to transform Liberia, Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai is developing ideas and necessary strategies for the upliftment of Liberians from the shackles of poverty.

Unity Party calls on its partisans, supporters and Liberians everywhere to remain upbeat and unperturbed as the mission to elect JNB continues unabated.

They get in the classroom at time with nothing in the stomach just to see the outcome of what I have been taught.

They are ready at all times to answer questions and instruct students to take the right path but Legislators failed to pass a bill for the advancement and well-being of (TEACHERS) but rather themselves.

Improvement in salaries and professional developments for teachers are challenges.

Improvement in their salaries and professional developments are challenges for teachers and those in rural Liberia
Teachers put in a lot of work outside of lessons to ensure that they are providing an engaging learning environment and supporting students.

They support students individually as well as providing engaging lessons that bring their subject to life, to inspire and motivate their students to do well; moreover, their works are many.

Should we continue to treat our teachers like this? After all, they are the reason or contributors to the success of our professions.
