The management of John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center (JFK) has been found liable and ordered to pay US$1.5 million as general damages and US$3.1 million in special damages for a wrongful surgical operation performed on one of its patients, identified as Madam Karen Gaydou Sehkehporh of Paynesville City.

Story By: Victoria G. Wesseh

The case against Liberia's largest medical facility took place in the Sixth Judicial Circuit, Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia.

The management of John F. Kennedy Medical Center had pleaded not guilty during the trial.

However, the jurors in the court on October 27, 2023, stated that they found the evidence against the hospital compelling and rejected the hospital's plea.

The jurors' unanimous verdict found that the evidence presented before the court "greatly implicates" the defendant.

The jurors rejected the arguments presented by the hospital's legal team.

"We, therefore, find the defendant liable as charged," the jurors ruled.

The management of the hospital was arraigned in court in October on the grounds of damages for a wrongful surgical operation carried out on one of its patients (Karen) in 2019.

Appearing before the court, the complainant, Karen, stated that she often received medical treatment at JFK..

Karen explained that on May 24, 2019, she began experiencing heavy bleeding and visited the Snipper Hill Clinic for tests. After receiving the results, she was referred to JFK for immediate surgery.

The complainant further informed the court as a result of the need for surgery, she began visiting the JFK as of May 30, 2019.

She said that upon visiting the facility, she was introduced to Dr. Ernest Enders, a medical professional employed by and working with the hospital, who was assigned to take care of her.

According to her, the doctor requested numerous tests and informed her that he needed to perform an Abdominal Hysterectomy Surgery, during which her ovaries would be removed due to a possible ovarian cancer diagnosis.

"He carried out his tests in collaboration with Dr. Billy Johnson, a consultant at JFK, who agreed with Dr. Enders, and a date was set for the surgery," she stated.

Karen explained that she was instructed to come on June 12, 2019, to be admitted to the hospital for surgery. The surgery was performed as scheduled, and she was discharged on June 16, 2019.

She noted that during her first visit to the hospital after the surgery, she was examined by Dr. Enders, who told her that she was doing well and cleared her to return to work and engage in other activities.

The complainant asserted that, relying upon the clearance given, she returned to work. Unfortunately, she started experiencing severe pains in her belly and legs.

Karen reported her condition to JFK, but was only given medication. Her condition worsened as she could neither sleep, eat, nor drink

Explaining her ordeal further, she said that while her health condition deteriorated, the hospital neglected her. She decided to go to Fidelity Health Center, where multiple surgeries were performed on her to stop the stomach pain, remove pus from her belly, stop the bleeding, and reduce the swelling of her belly.

She mentioned that during one of the surgical operations at Fidelity Hospital, doctors were astonished to find abdominal gauze inside her body with pieces of her flesh stuck to it as a result of the abdominal gauze left in her body by JFK's doctor who had performed the previous surgery.

The complainant asserted that a communication was written to JFK'S management about the situation, but they only visited her once, expressed regret, extended an apology, and left without helping in the recovery process.

Meanwhile, on Monday, October 30, 2023, the defendant filed a motion for a new trial, requesting that the verdict be set aside because it does not support the weight of the evidence presented at trial.

What's your view, do you think the health facility gonna provide this lady the said amount?

POEM TITTLE: "RISING VOICES"

Dedicated to all Youths around the world. "We are not too young to Lead"

Written by: Amb Joseph G. Tarpeh Jr.

"Rising Voices"

On this day, we celebrate the youth
With their dreams, passion, and truth
Their voices echo, loud and clear
As they rise above every fear

With hearts full of hope and fire
They strive to reach higher
Breaking barriers, shattering norms
Their spirit, like a raging storm

They hold the power to change the world
With their dreams, they pave a new road
Their eyes sparkle with endless possibilities
Their potential, a force of pure divinity

They dare to dream, they dare to speak
Their voices, a symphony unique
They stand together, hand in hand
As they build a future, bright and grand

Let us listen to their voices, let us hear
Their words, like music to the ear
For they are the leaders of tomorrow
Their dreams, a beacon of hope to follow

So on this International Youth Day
Let us celebrate in every way
The rising voices of the youth
For they are the world's everlasting truth.

INDEPENDENCE_MESSAGE

From: Amb Ezekiel F. Bundor

From what I've observe, from the current status of this country as compared to other nations globally, Liberians are only celebrating this 177th years of independence only because;

1. The country is still in existence
2. God mercy is still keeping us all alive
3. We still get hope for a better tomorrow
4. Our political leaders are not yet brave to sell the entire country..
5. There are still small minerals and resources remaining that can take our country to another level, if and only if God can bless us with that visionary leaders to bring it to accomplishment.
6. There's peace (no sound of gun's in the streets).

Having said the above, it's prudent upon every citizens of Liberia to take the full responsibility for the backwardness of our nation and stop blaming government and partners, from the foundation of this nation, we've been seeking after opportunities instead of creating those opportunities for ourselves...

Today marks a significant beginning of a new journey as we celebrate our nation 177yrs of Independence..
We need to be mindful of our attitude towards one another's, it's time we as a country and people say no to , and give to every citizen a sense of belonging.
In doing these things, we can build and sustain the kind of nation our past heroes dreamt of and laid down their lives for.
Freedom does not come so easily.
We are all indebted to our national heroes who made this country what it is today.

As patriotic citizens, letโ€™s put extra effort into performing our own civic responsibilities.
Our should not be seen as a but as our .
It is only by working together that we can build a resilient and thriving nation.

We claim to be an independent country when we are not capable of even feeding ourselves as a nation to the extent that even our stable food (RICE) are imported from India and other nations.
We claimed to be an Independent nation, but to ordinarily fixed a road of Ten (10) miles, our leaders must go out to people for (money) before it can be completed

FELLOW LIBERIANS, LIBERIA have Come of Age! 177 years, known for being rich in minerals and natural resources and still be recognized and number among the poorest countries of the world.
It's time we graduate from this life of Dependency, the attitude of wanting to get all the time not willing to give back, we can't be the one to always be saying thank you.... let's rise up, let's open our eyes to the true reality of life, and lets open our hearts to one another, putting our country above self interest.

We're too Rich to keep living in high Poverty which comes as the results of that keep growing in Us!

The labor of our past leaders should not be in vain.
As we rejoice today, letโ€™s remember them and pledge to always strive our hardest to uphold the freedom and unity they fought for.
As a nation, we need good leaders who we can trustโ€”the kind of leaders who always put the public's wellbeing above their political or personal interests so that the yearnings and aspirations of the common people can be realized.

The future, progress, and development of our great country do not depend solely on technological advancements but on how we build social cohesion and trust between our nation and its people. Let's continue building a great nation we can all rely on and be proud of.

Again, it is time for us to show other nations that we are great people from a great nation. Let's continue to work toward the prosperity and betterment of our dear country.
Thanks, have a great day.
