ALJA PAYS TRIBUTE TO LIBERIAN STATESMAN

The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) is preparing to pay tribute to the late Rev. J. Edwin Lloyd, Sr, former President of the Liberia National Red Cross Society and the first Director General of the National Bureau of Veteran Affairs, Republic of Liberia. Rev. Lloyd, a veteran Liberian clergyman, statesman, and staunch humanitarian advocate for press freedom in Liberia passed away on May 6, 2023, in Olney, Maryland.

According to an ALJA press statement, National Vice President Dr. Samuel Wai Johnson will deliver tribute on behalf of National President Joe S. Mason. Liberian journalists residing in America will join scores of mourners to celebrate Rev. Lloyd's legacy of advocacy for social justice in Liberia. The organization also recognizes Rev. Llyod's role in its formation.

In the late 1990s, Rev. Lloyd joined a group of Liberian journalists who gathered in Washington, DC, to organize the Association. According to former ALJA National Secretary General Gabriel Williams, Rev. Lloyd prayed during that gathering and provided objective counsel to the leadership during ALJA's formative years.

Rev. Lloyd's fearless criticism of the People's Redemption Council government in the immediate aftermath of the 1980 military coup for human rights abuses led to his two-year arrest and imprisonment at the infamous Belleh Yallah Prison in Lofa County.

A decade later, when the civil crisis erupted, Rev. Lloyd, who was former Chaplain General of the Armed Forces of Liberia, was threatened and forced to flee the country after his demand for peace talks to be held between the government of President Samuel Doe and the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) to avoid a prolonged and devastating crisis, was rejected by the government.

The organization's National Secretary General, Akai Glidden, local chapter coordinator, Kadiatu Conteh Brohiri, and Elections Commission.

Information reaching the GNN Liberia has hinted that a warning has been given to the National Elections Commission (NEC) by the United States and European Union and other international communities not to allow those who have been sanctioned to contest the upcoming 2023 elections.

The warnings also stated that with the failure of the NEC to adhere to this, the commission may miss out on all support towards NEC for pending 2023 general and Presidential elections.

Officials who have been sanctioned include Senator Prince Y. Johnson of Nimba County, Senator Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County, the former Solicitor General Sayma S. Cephus, former Managing Director of the National Port Authority, Bill Twehway, and the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel F. McGill.

Both Twehway and McGill are said to be preparing for the pending elections for Legislative seats for Rivercess and B**g Counties.

With these reported warnings from the United States, the European Union, and other international communities, the NEC must be mindful in this regard.

Efforts by the GNN Liberia staff to contact the Public Affairs office to either confirm this report never succeeded.

Liberian Senate Passes Controversial Bill

Capitol Hill: The plenary of the Liberian Senate in consultation with the House of Representatives has reached a decision to ensure all elected officials in the 2023 elections ( Senators and Representatives) and other subsequent elections be seated while awaiting the outcome of electoral complaint(s) against them.

The Senate plenary through its Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Varney Sherman said such decision came as a result of a conference committee report as part of amendments in the New Elections Law of 1986.

Explaining the conference committee report, Senator Sherman indicated that those elected will be duly paid, while serving their mandate as complaints will being looked at.

The conference committee report also indicated that if any person (s) who filed the complaint in the court of law and won the matter against the sitting elected officials, the person will immediately take over as per the Court’s mandate and continue from where the previous elected official ended.

The amended to the motion for the passage of the bill was proffered by Nimba County Senator Jeremiah Koung.

Critics have frowned on the Senate’s decision that it is only intended to favor the current senators seeking re-election. Analysts say the move by the Liberian Senate will further breed conflicts in the country amid unresolved disputes emanating from the electoral process.

Pres. Weah Suspends Designated Officials

Monrovia, Liberia - The President of Liberia has received with serious concern, a recent United States Treasury Department report which designates three of his officials for specialized sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act.

President Weah views the allegations against the officials contained in the report as grave.

In view of this, President George Manneh Weah has suspended the named officials, Minister of State Nathaniel McGill, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority Bill Twehway, and Solicitor General Seyma Serenius Cyphus with immediate effect to enable them to face investigation.

The President has also designated the principal deputies of the suspended officials to act in their stead.

President Weah lied. Betrayal or Scam? Did president Weah desecrate the office of the Presidency? Who is the real Mr. Liar Man?

On Monday, August 1, 2022- President Weah issued his long-awaited Independence message. In his speech, the president reiterated his support for the rule of law among others.
While mentioning the 26 July brutal battle involving the CDC-COP and the Student Unification Party of the University of Liberia, he said in a verbal and written communication that the CDC-COP is not an auxiliary of the CDC nor is it a part of his organization (Coalition for Democratic Change- CDC).
However, it has been gathered that the CDC-COP is a known member of the CDC of which President Weah is the head.
The Liberian leader's statement came after several uphill battles calling on the National Authority, Ministry of Justice, and the LNP to lunch a full-scale investigation into the 26 US Embassy saga that led over 17 persons wounded, injected, and scraped naked following students' protest, calling on President Weah and his CDC government to do more in terms of governance, rule of law and major societal ills under a theme tagged .

The Liberian leader denied having the CDC-COP as a part of his political party. Notwithstanding, the CDC-COP is headed by Ben Togba, who joined the CDC after a breakaway from the COP led by Henry P. Costa, and was given full status to function as an auxiliary of the CDC in March 2022.
Without knowledge of the CDC-COP, Weah lied.
