What are awards or what is an award?
An award is a a prize or a mark of recognition given in honor of an achievement to a person or organization. Awards has a time period limit. From this time to this time. It could be a 1 year, a 5 year, a 10 years, or even a 100 year period.

It’s given to whomever had the highest recognized achievement in that period. The same in every career space. Entertainment or Corporate.

So in music is no different.
Winning an award doesn’t mean you are the best person ever. No.

What is means is, of all the songs that was put out this year, or within the award period. Your song had the highest number, highest reach, and highest recognition.
Globally or Locally.
So for this period and this period only, you are the best artist.
Except you are able to replicate this success next year, and if no one does more. Then you might win it again.

So awards are not about who’s the most talented, except it’s a talent award. Music awards are about the music. Not about how consistent you are.
You can be consistently dropping bangers and winning artist of the year every year.
If someone drops something that supersedes yours for a specific year, they will be the artist of the year for that year.
And you will have the chance win it back the following year.

So with respect to every artist in this year MLMA artist of the year category, JZyNO’s song BMB was not only the biggest of the year, but the most historical in Liberia’s music history.

Most Liberian artists and producers are caught up in the Dunning-Kruger effect.
And growth is halted during this period.

What is the Dunning-Kruger effect?

The Dunning-Kruger effect occurs when a person's lack of knowledge and skills in a certain area cause them to overestimate their own competence.

These are the 4 stages of the Dunning-Kruger effect

1. Unconscious incompetence: You’re ignorant of what you don’t know.

2. Conscious incompetence: You’re aware of what you don’t know, but you haven’t taken steps to learn more.

3. Conscious competence: You’re actively learning and acquiring knowledge about a subject.

4. Unconscious competence: You’ve mastered a subject so extensively that you may forget or take for granted how much you truly know.

The Dunning-Kruger effect can be caused my many things. But in our line of work (music industry) it can be as a result of too much praises early on. Too many compliments without highlighting your errors. Too many people around you who are only able to tell you what you want to hear.
It’s good to always keep your feet on the ground, open up to receiving new information.
