Campaigner Seeks Charles Taylor’s Release
Solomon Weawea, Executive Director of the Liberia National Heritage and Culture Development Association (LNHCDA), has launched a petition calling for the release of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Weawea aims to collect two million signatures from Liberians to support Taylor’s freedom and to urge a review of his 2012 conviction by the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL). He believes the trial was unfairly selective and criticized international justice for not prosecuting other leaders involved in the Liberian and Sierra Leonean civil wars.
Weawea contends that while Taylor supported rebel leader Foday Sankoh, he did not directly invade Sierra Leone, and other regional leaders, such as those from Ivory Coast and Guinea, also played significant roles in the conflict without facing similar accountability. Taylor was convicted for aiding the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a group notorious for atrocities in Sierra Leone, by providing weapons and support in exchange for "blood diamonds."
Although some see Taylor as a war criminal, others argue that his conviction was influenced by geopolitical factors, making his case divisive. Taylor remains in prison in the UK, serving a 50-year sentence, but his supporters, led by Weawea, are questioning whether justice was truly served.
