Liberia, IMF Reach US$ 209 million Staff-Level Agreement for ECF Support
---Acting Finance Minister Myers Discloses

Liberia’s Acting Minister of Finance and Development Planning Hon. Anthony G. Myers has disclosed that the International Monetary Fund Staff and the Liberian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on a comprehensive set of policy priorities to support a new 40-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.

The agreement worth SDR155 million (or US$209 million) arrangement is subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board. SDR or special drawing rights is the unit of value for IMF funds available to member countries to address various financing gaps, including deficits in the capital or balance-of-payments account. The board discussion is scheduled for September 25.

He added that the arrangement, pending approval by the IMF's Executive Board, is a statement of confidence in the current Joseph Nyma Boakai administration determination to undertake reforms in the public financial management sector. This, according to Min. Myers, includes restoring fiscal sustainability, rebuilding external reserves, ensuring financial sector stability, and revitalizing a reform agenda to tackle governance and corruption issues.

Minister Myers further outlined some key benefits of the ECF to Liberia. These benefits, among others, include setting financial policy framework that facilitates the actualization of the ARREST Agenda and the return to fiscal sustainability. Other benefits are increase in Liberia’s allocations in other financing sources such as the International Development Association, African Development Fund, International Finance Corporation, etc.

The Acting Finance Minister was speaking on Tuesday, August 27th at the weekly press briefings organized by the Ministry of Information Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT).

"A Tragic Incident Claims the Lives of Three Burkinabe Cocoa Farmers in Grand Gedeh County"

On yesterday a tragic incident in the forest of Duogee Town, B’hai Administrative District, Grand Gedeh County, has claimed the lives of three Burkinabe nationals, with one survivor.

The deceased have been identified as Sawadog Mohammed Desire, 34, Yameogo Oliver, 25, and Tiono Ouibila, 25. The sole survivor is Antoine Tapsoba, 34.

This heartbreaking event occurred when a massive dead tree fell on the hut where the victims, cocoa farmers from Burkina Faso, were residing.

The Burkinabe nationals had come to Liberia specifically to plant cocoa. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 24, 2024, also left several people injured.

Investigations reveal that the farmers had cleared parts of the forest but did not fully cut down the trees. Instead, they severed the roots and burned the bark, leaving the trees vulnerable and prone to collapse without warning. As a result, the decayed tree fell, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

A 15-member coroner jury was convened to thoroughly examine the bodies. They concluded that the deaths were directly caused by the falling tree.

The administrative officer, Hon. Madison Neewray, along with the Liberia National Police (LNP), has released the bodies to the families for proper burial. Meanwhile, the LNP has invited the owner of the farmland, Mr. Othello Bah, where the incident occurred, for questioning at the Toe Town Police Detachment.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by unsafe agricultural practices. Local authorities are urging farmers to adopt safer methods when clearing land to prevent such incidents in the future.

He has demonstrated a history of being a pathological liar when he even said the budget the UP government is operating on is a CDC budget. Guess he was still seeking his US Green Card when Boakai presented the RESCUE budget to the Legislature. Let me not forget that he has a history of absconding the country for greener pastures.

In a press briefing, Rep. Cole said the Liberian Constitution mandates that once the Speaker appoints an individual to a statutory committee, that individual is beyond the Speaker's jurisdiction regarding suspension matters.

He stated that the House of Parliament requires a two-thirds majority of its members to suspend any member; Citing House Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa has no grounds for such actions against him.

Rep. Cole attributed the speculation to political motivations, stating that his strong performance and alignment within the legislature should negate any reason for potential suspension.

However, Rep. Cole has criticized the Unity Party-led administration for what he termed “constitutional violations” and “selective justice,” which he believes undermines the integrity of Liberia’s governance structure.

Furthermore, Rep. Cole condemned recent police actions against supporters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) at the party headquarters.

He described these actions as indicative of the tense political climate following statements made by presidential candidate Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who suggested that the Unity Party's defeat could signify an end to peace in Liberia.

The B**g District #3 Lawmaker told journalists that under the watch of the Unity Party, the police have continued to take away many innocent lives, citing instances such as the Bea Mountain protest as examples of ongoing police brutality.

In another development, Rep. Cole, at the weekend, donated an additional 30 bundles of zinc to marketers at the Gbarnga General Market.
He stated that his donation aims to provide shelter for those who did not benefit from his earlier contribution of 150 bundles of zinc.

At the occasion, he promised to remain supportive of the plights of the people of District #3.

Two Missing in Yar River, Nimba County

At least two members of the Bility Development Foundation (BDF) have gone missing in the Yar River, located between electoral districts #4 and #2 in Nimba County.

The Bility Development Foundation, led by its CEO Mr. Musa Hassan Bility, was joined by Representative Nyahn Flomo of district #2 to commence construction on a bridge over the river.

The unfortunate incident occurred when a raft carrying some members of the foundation capsized, leading to the disappearance of at least two individuals identified as Lawrence and Morris. These individuals are believed to be Representative Bility’s bodyguards.

The construction of this bridge has long been a dream for the residents of districts #2 and #4. Unfortunately, this is not the first such incident to occur in the area.

The closest towns to the river are Payee and Tiapa. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and the office of the district representative

I been hearing about this karate Kid 2 since two days ago now, so I been waiting for lonestar to set up their internet problem so I can watch the new Karate kid (2024) movie.

Now that I jah got through watching it. Let me tell you saying something small.

Report says at least 32 people have died and many others have been injured in an al-Shabab attack on a popular beach in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants have been fighting with the internationally supported federal government for over 17 years.

They have previously targeted the Lido beach area, which is often visited by business people and government officials.

The assault, began late on Friday when a su***de bomber detonated a device and gunmen stormed the area, police and witnesses said.
