His novels encompass life, usually of working and the middle classes living in and around Colombo giving a new social awareness of life in the city which is often taken for granted by most of us. Kulasena Fonseka made a dramatic entrance into the sinhala literary field in the early eighties bagging the coveted state award in 1982 for the best novel for his "Palama Yata" which was later made into a
n award wining film. He followed it up by wining the acclaimed literary awards in 1984, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1nd 1996 for his novels and translations. The great author's novels, written for both adults and the young, expose the reader to the depth of the society providing him revealing experiences which enrich his life.
