Power Department Hosts Awareness Programme on Electrical Safety and Smart Prepaid Meters

Gangtok, August 31 (IPR): An awareness programme on electrical safety, energy conservation, and smart prepaid meters was organised by Power Department at Dochum School in Sirwani, Singtam, today.

A smart meter is an electronic device equipped with two-way communication capabilities that automatically collects meter readings. It ensures payment only for the electricity consumed, potentially leading to savings without any additional charges. Smart meters do not increase electricity bills; instead, they promote cost reduction by encouraging more mindful electricity usage. With automatic meter reading, billing becomes accurate and error-free, eliminating the need for manual intervention. The method of measuring electricity remains the same for both the old static electronic meters and the new smart meters.

In his address, Mr. Prabhakar Verma Commissioner cm Secretary, Power Department emphasised that, in line with the directives from the Government of India and the state government, the Energy and Power Department has begun organising awareness camps regarding the installation of smart prepaid meters throughout the state for both domestic and commercial use.

He further explained the functioning of smart prepaid meters, the potential savings for consumers, and various benefits. Mr. Verma also informed about the recharging process and discussed the evolution of smart meters in India since 1999.

Additionally, Mr. Verma stressed the importance of safety checks during installation and noted that digitalisation will provide consumers a hassle-free experience, saving them considerable time. He further explained that under the government's scheme providing 100 free units for rural residents, a system will be set up to credit consumers' accounts with these free units. However, once the free units are exhausted, consumers will need to recharge their accounts to ensure continuous electricity supply.

He also assured that the department is working towards achieving the Chief Minister’s vision of uninterrupted power supply under the 'BiPaSa' initiative.

In his address, Mr. T.T. Bhutia urged the adoption of new smart prepaid meters and expressed hope that the awareness programme addressed the questions raised. He encouraged attendees to assist the department by spreading awareness about smart prepaid meters. Additionally, Mr. Bhutia emphasised the significance of embracing technological advancements to enhance efficiency and sustainability, facilitating a smooth transition to these modern solutions.

In his presentation, Mr. Thinlay Gyamtso, SE, Singtam, emphasised the importance of raising public awareness. He also addressed the need to improve power generation and electricity production, along with the transmission and distribution of power. Additionally, he highlighted the state government's efforts to reduce power supply rates and stressed the advantages of smart prepaid meters. He recommended using appliances with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) ratings to manage power consumption effectively and discussed relevant safety measures.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Karma Dorjee Bhutia, DE, Singtam.

30/08/2024

The All India Football Federation's (AIFF) motto, "Indian Football, Forward Together," reflects a vision of collective progress and unity in the development of football across the nation. However, the reality in Sikkim seems to diverge from this ideal. Despite sincere efforts to advance the game and create opportunities for young talent, the local football association often acts as a hindrance rather than a partner in progress. Instead of fostering collaboration, these entities appear more focused on maintaining control, which stifles the growth of football in the region and undermines the spirit of unity that the AIFF champions.
We established Football Development Private Limited starting Sikkim Premier League with the support and patronage of Honble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang-Golay saab from the ground up, with the sole aim of genuinely developing football in the region. Our commitment is to push forward, even when faced with obstacles, to ensure the game flourishes in Sikkim. Despite putting in significant efforts to revitalize and grow football, the local association often seems to act as a barrier rather than a supporter.
I believe that to truly let football flourish on the field, we must set our egos aside and focus on the bigger picture developing the sport for the benefit of all.
Lastly, Sikkim Football will only progress when we all share the same goals and work together towards a common purpose 👏🏻
