A meeting to review progress on malaria work from the first 6 months of 2023 and strategize for the 2024 RAI4E project was held in the meeting room of the Public Health Department of Saravan Province.

The purpose was to review the progress of malaria-related work during the first half of 2023 and develop strategies for 2024 in relation to the RAI4E project.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Viengakhone Souriyo, Executive Director of CHIAs, and Dr. Thongsavanh Piemmalay, Head of PAM at the Provincial Health Department. Additionally, personnel from the association and district health departments actively participated in the discussions.

The major success of the malaria elimination work is demonstrated the public health efforts to promote human rights to access universal and equal health service by focusing on access to vulnerable populations including forest goers, migrant groups, children, women and hard to reach populations, by capacity strengthening and contributing to service delivery by the community.

On November 2-3, 2023, a meeting titled "Strengthening Community Participation for CLM, Gender, PEASH in Malaria Project" was held in Vangvieng.
The objectives of the meeting were to:
- Learn about CLM models in Laos and steps for future evolution
- Reflect on the value added by CLM
- Develop a guiding plan for CLM in the malaria program in Laos
- Learn about gender, equity analysis, and PSEAH
30 participants attended from various organizations including HPA, PEDA, CHIAs, CMPE, UNOPS, CCM Secretariat, CSOs, KPs, PLWDs, DHHP, and regional platforms.
At the meeting, participants voted for 3 Lao CSO steering committee members who will serve for 3 years from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026:

Dr. Thet Lynn (HPA)

🏥💪 staff from Khongsedone District in southern Laos collaborated to conduct important follow-up work at the Nanong Health Centre. As part of their efforts, they gathered crucial monthly summaries from the area's Village Health Volunteers. This coordination between district-level officials and local health volunteers will help provide critical updates and insights into community health needs in Khongsedone. By working together, they can help ensure proper monitoring and care for the villages in their remote district.

🌿🦟 As the district facilitator of Sa Mouay District, Mr. Agnoun travels twice a week to remote villages located in the rainforest. Together with volunteers, he conducts malaria screenings, tests and provides health education to communities that are frequently isolated and lack access to basic healthcare services.

During the rainy season, it can be difficult to reach the community, but the district staff and village volunteers remain dedicated to providing health education and malaria testing in the targeted village. The staff from the center provides monitoring and support to malaria volunteers in Taoi District, Saravan Province. They also offer subsidies to village-level volunteers in order to prevent and eliminate malaria, with the goal of enhancing their knowledge and facilitating a platform for exchanging problems and challenges encountered during activity implementation at the village level. Furthermore, they compile a comprehensive report on the progress of activities related to accessing, examining, and treating malaria at home, ensuring the prompt resolution of any shortages of test equipment and medicine within the given month.

Empowering facilitators with essential skills in Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM), Prevention Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), Data system, and the art of storytelling; enabling them to effectively execute project goals and create a tangible impact in the ongoing fight against malaria.

The Workshop on regional health security focusing on malaria elimination was held in Vientiane, Laos PDR on 4-5 May 2023. The workshop aimed to contribute to improved regional health security by strengthening collaboration among the national malaria control programs and CSOs working on malaria along the border of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. The objectives of the workshop were to identify opportunities for improving the effective use of regional data platform in decision-making, to identify potential gaps and opportunities for working towards prevention of reintroduction across the borders, to exchange experience in facilitating community engagement in the malaria elimination last-mile activities, to explore areas of work for regional health security beyond malaria, and to disseminate the preliminary findings from malaria operational research activities.

Day is an annual global observance marked on 25 April to raise awareness of the global malaria epidemic and to provide an opportunity for mobilization for the fight against the disease. The theme for World Malaria Day 2023 is "Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement".
🇱🇦 Laos is a country in Southeast Asia that is at risk for malaria. The disease is most common in the southern and central parts of the country, where there are more forests and wetlands. Malaria is less common in the north and northeast of the country, where the climate is drier.
The number of malaria cases in Laos has been declining in recent years. In 2010, there were an estimated 23,047 cases of malaria in Laos. By 2022, the number of cases had fallen to 2,305. This decline is due to a number of factors, including:
- Increased investment in malaria prevention and control
- Improved access to healthcare
- Increased awareness of malaria among the population
🤝 The Laotian government, in partnership with international organizations and donors, has been working to reduce the burden of malaria in the country through various interventions. These include distributing insecticide-treated bed nets, providing prompt diagnosis and treatment of malaria cases, and conducting indoor residual spraying in areas with high malaria transmission.
❗️Despite these efforts, malaria remains a significant public health problem in Laos, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and young children. Therefore, sustained efforts are needed to control and eliminate malaria in the country.

Mr. Khamlueng Kettavong is a provincial project coordinator in Salavan province, he has roles to support and facilitate 11 district facilitators and 402 village malaria workers in malaria elimination works, Last month he went to Taoi district for supervision in community level. he said,

"....conducting VMWs supervision is really important, due to it is the opportunity to discuss and exchange regarding performance achieved, improving, challenges and finding solutions with community level...."

All Village Malaria Workers (VMWs) are provided the rapid diagnostic test kit which can show the test results within 15 minutes.
These test kits are very easy to use. in case, if malaria positive case founded, VMWs will provide the treatment and refer to health centers.
