Ever catch yourself mindlessly scrolling TikTok for hours, gaming until 3 AM, or compulsively checking Facebook notifications? 😲 The secret behind this behavior is the Hook Model - a psychological framework that product developers use to turn casual users into habitual ones.
The Hook Model works through 4 key stages:
1️⃣ Trigger (The Spark) Something that prompts us to take action
* External triggers → Push notifications, ads, emails, that red notification badge
* Internal triggers → Emotions like boredom, FOMO, loneliness, or curiosity
2️⃣ Action (The Behavior) The simplest possible behavior we can do in response to the trigger
* Swiping, tapping like, scrolling through feeds, opening an app
3️⃣ Variable Reward (The Unpredictable Payoff) The uncertain reward we get after taking action - this unpredictability keeps us coming back for more Three main types:
* Social rewards → Likes, comments, shares - that dopamine hit from social validation
* Material rewards → New content, loot boxes, surprise features - satisfying our hunter-gatherer instincts
* Personal rewards → Sense of achievement, progress bars, completing tasks
4️⃣ Investment (The Hook Sets Deeper) Time, effort, data, or money we put into the platform, making it harder to leave
