He started playing in miniature clubs at Boat Quay, slowly then shifting his focus to the trendy stretch of Clubs and Bars situated at the then famous Mohammed Sultan Road. Here he had to play a variety of musical genres from 80’s, 90’s POP Billboard Charts, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Acid Jazz, Indie, Rock, Ska, Blues and R&B. This got him educated in a vast area in the aspect of music itself, but
he didn’t want to be just some Dj playing out tunes on request, like he was some jukebox. He wanted to be a cut above the rest
His Opportunity came when he was introduced by another Dj Friend called Latifah who was the resident Dj of Club Samsara. She told him about the underground music scene and all the different forms of electronic sounds and genres. He learnt about Danny Rampling, Danny Howells, Carl Cox, Cream, Ministry of Sound, Global Underground, Trade and Euphoria. From here on, he had to pick up fast and select from the many different types of genres that was being played out like house, trance, drum n bass, progressive house, tech house, electro trance and the list could go on but somehow the only sounds that captured his heart was Techno. For most Asians Techno would be “Barbie Girl” - Aqua or Fun Factory type of style but this was not what he was wanting to play. He loved the rhythm and beats created by Jeff Mills, Carl Cox, Kevin Saunderson and Ken Ishii. He patronized club Zouk reglarlyto listen to all the big names and headliners coming from every part of the globe, to watch them play and understand how their sets was delivered with such a touch of class and he so wanted to do the same. By year 2001, Mohammed sultan had been officailly shut down by the Government to pave a new way for Business and Offices which lead to the death of a dance culture in Singapore. The only place still standing strong and growing till today is Zouk. Dj Immanuel decided to Leave his native Singapore in early 2002 heading for Australia Melbourne to experiment with the harder side of dance music, particularly the lesser known techno sounds coming into Australia from Europe and the US. He had worked with The Teriyaki Anaki Sake Crew and Played in Clubs like Scuba, 101, Altitude, Laundry, Republika, Bimbo Delux and First Floor picking up the skills of playing a live set using the Hardwares from Korg Electribe Series. He had worked along with Andrew Marsh, Simon Slieker, Ben Cromack and Jerry P**n. Having honed his DJing skills and broadened his understanding of music, Immanuel began to amassed a following of techno pilgrims who would make journeys from as far as Sidney to hear him play. DJing naturally led to various studio work. Immanuel has developed a sound that takes the intelligent beats of the underground, funky/hard/groove techno sound mixed with his very own style. Pushing Boundries producing techno and remixing tracks from INXS’s- “Suicide Blonde", Red Hot Chili Pepper’s- "Soul To Squeeze", Jimi Hendrix’s- “Are You expereinced” and Michael Jackson’s "Thriller". He looks up to producers like Victor Ruiz, Alex Stein and Lucas Magalhaes. He flies the flag for true Techno spirit, pushing cutting edge sounds alongside a consistency of vision and purpose rare in the ever changing world of dance music. In short Immanuel will go to leaps and bounds globetrotting to be established but he will never be an establishment.
