Have you ever asked yourself where that creative photo you saw on newspaper/Online came from? The guys behind the camera go through a lot of challenges to get you that image that will leave you emotional.
A good example is photojournalists covering WRC Safari Rally Kenya. From lack of proper equipment, Thanks to providing all weather professional camera equipment that we call “beast.” Thanks to WRC Kenya for those 4x4 wheel drive land cruisers that took us through the tough terrain and not forgetting the Standard Media Group for facilitation.
We were supposed to be at special stage 2 hours earlier before the first car scheduled time meaning we got to wake up between 3a-4am if we are to drive an hour to our destination. Getting late means we have to leave our vehicle behind and risk walking in the territory controlled by deadly animals as we try to locate our photo box.
For us to get better images, we have to be on receiving side of either water splash, Debris or dust left behind by speeding cars.
In the conservancy we have to mind our surrounding or lest one get snatched by a lion or bitten by a snake. We have to request the hotel management to pack our breakfast at night which will also serve as lunch the following day since there are no kiosks around.
Even after being issued with official tabards and passes which authorize photographers to move outside the areas which have been set aside for the special stage, we always clash with marshals who claim to care about our safety when they see us placed in a position which is a danger but to us is a great photo position.
After all that struggles, the snipers next big headache is how to get back to our hotel after crazy spectator traffic jam caused by recklessly overlapping drivers. The earliest we can get back is at 10pm-11pm.
And the circle continues for the Four days we are in the field.
Now you know.--
