Unlocking Futures: The 2024 Form Four Leavers Mentorship Festival & Talent Extravaganza

After years of guided education, many students finishing Form Four feel lost—especially those who don’t qualify for university or college. They suddenly face the challenge of deciding their next steps in a rapidly changing world. For students with talents in areas like art, music, sports, and tech, this uncertainty is even greater, as traditional career paths often overshadow their creative potential.

The 2024 Form Four Leavers Mentorship Festival & Talent Extravaganza Organized by ACTT Digital Media, this year-long program kicks off with a summit from February 25th to 27th, 2025, at the University of Nairobi and virtually. The festival is designed to guide, inspire, and empower students—whether they are headed for higher education, technical training, or the workforce.

Why This Festival Matters This isn’t just a one-time event—it’s a year-long initiative addressing the challenges Form Four leavers face. Students will gain essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, along with tailored career guidance. For those with talents in creative fields, the festival offers mentorship and resources to help turn their skills into successful careers.

In Kenya, where opportunities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) are growing, the festival emphasizes that all career paths—whether university, TVET, or direct entry into the workforce—are respected and supported.

A Modern, Inclusive Experience The hybrid format allows students from across Kenya to participate through live sessions and interactive workshops. Schools, community centers, and homes can host Watch Parties to create shared learning experiences. On-demand content ensures everyone can access the festival, making it inclusive and accessible.

What’s in It for Students? Students will engage with industry professionals, explore career options, and gain practical knowledge through workshops on grant applications, CV writing, interview skills, and more. The Talent Extravaganza provides a platform for creative students to showcase their abilities and connect with mentors. Additionally, students interested in technical skills will learn about the demand for TVET training and how it can lead to rewarding careers. There are also opportunities to explore emerging fields like creative tech, digital media, and game development.

A Holistic Approach to Career Guidance The festival covers a wide range of career paths, from traditional professions to creative industries and entrepreneurship. It helps students prepare for a rapidly evolving job market by providing personalized mentorship and practical skills.

For Parents, Schools, and Businesses Parents will learn how to support their children as they navigate career choices. Schools can align their guidance programs with the CBC goals by incorporating the festival’s content. Businesses can sponsor scholarships, internships, and apprenticeships, helping shape the next generation of professionals and creatives in Kenya.

Why This Event Is Timely. With over 65% of recent high school graduates uncertain about their career paths, this festival fills a critical gap by providing practical guidance and mentorship.

Soft Skills

If you have ever owned a Chihuahua or watched YouTube Videos and shorts about those small dogs, you know they are called the demons from hell. Small do, devil personality. It is not their fault. Like all dogs, they need training and a firm hand from their owners. But because we are human, chihuahua humans treat their dogs like small babies. They baby them. As a result, the tiny demons develop what is called a Napoleon Complex and become a terror to everyone but their very owner. Why?

Well, because they were not properly socialised, they were not trained and they were kept in pockets by their ‘selfish’ owners who treat them like toys than dogs. For context, think of the training that goes into big dogs like German Shepards or even the now, increasingly popular Belgian Malinois, which is training to achieve its best. Their innate skills utilised to the core. The Border Collie that herds your sheep or the Retriever or the Lab or even the Rottie that raises your kids. Our focus on soft skills is to sharpen you innate skills so that, in future, you don’t become a terror, the devil’s dog of your workplace or worse, your family. In other words, no matter your personality, you should know yourself well enough to know how to manage yourself so you don’t develop a napoleon complex!

And just like that, we have our first assignment: what is your personality type? And if you don’t know your personality because (a) you are most likely under 25, so your brain and personality are still growing or (b) you have done so many studies that you don’t exactly know… then write down what you like the people around you to behave when dealing with you and we will build on that next week!

FAQs on soft skills: What the best soft skills for any career? What careers are suited for introverts, extrovert? What is the difference between shy and lack of confidence? Why is arrogance and low selt-esteem so hard to differentiate?

The story goes like this, give a person fish and they will depend on you forever. But teach a person to fish, and they will become great fishermen. There is a subtle, but distinct difference between these two things. One is so good and feels so good because it has that instant benefit.

The second is so good, but and sounds like a good idea because every human desires the freedom to fend for themselves and not become dependent. A victim. This applies to mentorship, as well. We can choose to bring you inspiring quotes and fancy-labelled gifts to inspire you to be good and it will feel so good; or we can choose to bring you insightful quads and fascinating brain teasers to fortify your brain muscles so you can begin to function as an independent person in your life and career.

If you are looking for inspiration and gifted amusement, unlike this post and don’t follow us. We are not that kind of a place. If you want to become the person you think and dream and hope you can become, well, keep it here and remember to register at www.mentorship.co.ke for weekly mentorship bundles.
We encourage followers to share their understanding of being empowered in the mentorship space so we can take that into account.

Talent:
Just a few years go, the phrase was 15-minutes of fame. This, meant that talent or fame - which is seen as many as the ultimate benefit of talent - would require 15 minutes of continuous exposure. This was not easy back then - with a few television and radio stations to work with and also, with such superstars, fame was hard to come. Now, the bar is appears even lower.

A simple 10-second clip can go viral and voila, you are famous. However, the space is different because almost everyone has the same 5-6 platforms to explore and exposé themselves. Statistically, going viral and getting famous is even more difficult today than before.

And sure, you may say we have more people, but since you are still fresh off school - do the math: factor in more screens, more screen-time today versus the past. Good? Great! That is how talent work, or rather the talent we traditionally consider talent or most dream about. While this may serve to discourage or motivate you - depending on other factors, remember that more bands make money off life performances off the talent and still live great. In other words, they are musicians and while they cannot belt it like Freddie Mercury, they can hold the beat and their singing voice is great.

This is the reality of talent - any talent. Art, sports, music, performance and in between. Once you know this, then you wont go in blind. But also, you will begin to ask the right question. Like, how to win in this game where there is only one winner from 10 million!

We Invite followers to submit what thy think their talent is, and if they think they are good enough that we can showcase it here.

FAQs: What is the Talent Extravaganza during the festival? How will ACTT Media showcase these talents? How can my talent be shown/featured?

This is not a form one girl holding an umbrella during culture day. It is the pretty Ms. Monica Buchichi, the Senior Principal of St Mary's Girls Mumias in Kakamega County. She's my good friend.

Africa Center for Technology Transfer-ACTT Digital Media always tell Principals that once in a while it's good to do something that brings you closer to your students e.g wearing their uniform even if its once in a term to surprise them or also eating with them in the dining hall even if its once in a year.

In high school, it's the little things that matter.
Students will forget all the things you said in the assembly, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

Ms. Monica Buchichi has been shortlisted for the position of the Best Principal, Extracounty Girls School. Voting opens soon.
