Warning signs that someone may attempt su***de

You can’t see what a person is feeling on the inside, so it isn’t always easy to identify when someone is having suicidal thoughts. However, some outward warning signs that a person may be contemplating su***de include:

• talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or alone
• saying they have no reason to go on living
• making a will or giving away personal possessions
• searching for a means of doing personal harm, such as buying sharp objects or ropes
• sleeping too much or too little
• eating too little or eating too much, resulting in significant weight gain or loss
• engaging in reckless behaviors, including excessive alcohol or drug consumption
• avoiding social interactions with others
• expressing rage or intentions to seek revenge
• showing signs of extreme anxiousness or agitation
• having dramatic mood swings
• talking about su***de as a way out

It can feel scary, but taking action and getting someone the help they need may help prevent a su***de attempt or death.

Depression symptoms
Depression can be more than a constant state of sadness or feeling “blue.”

Major depression can cause a variety of symptoms. Some affect your mood and others affect your body. Symptoms may also be ongoing or come and go.

General signs and symptoms
Not everyone with depression will experience the same symptoms. Symptoms can vary in severity, how often they happen, and how long they last.

If you experience some of the following signs and symptoms nearly every day for at least 2 weeks, you may be living with depression:

• feeling sad, anxious, or “empty”
• feeling hopeless, worthless, and pessimistic
• crying a lot
• feeling bothered, annoyed, or angry
• loss of interest in hobbies and interests you once enjoyed
• decreased energy or fatigue
• difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
• moving or talking more slowly
• difficulty sleeping, early morning awakening, or oversleeping
• appetite or weight changes
chronic physical pain with no clear cause that does not get better with treatment (headaches, aches or pains, digestive problems, cramps)
• thoughts of death, su***de, self-harm, or su***de attempts
