We witnessed Cheung Ka Long fight for Gold medal at the Paris Olympics! We watched it while on a video call with Ellen’s parents who live in New Zealand.

Fencing is very much part of Ellen and her family as her dad, Daniel Chan 陳啟生 represented Hong Kong at the Seoul Olympics 1988 as an Epeeist. He coached fencing in Hong Kong and is currently a coach for New Zealand team. He is passionate about fencing and so proud to see the younger generation fence so well! 🤺🇭🇰

Well done to Vivian Kong & Cheung Ka Long for 2 gold medals!! 🥇🥇...

來自北愛爾蘭的 Daniel Peacock，曾在香港生活兩年，說得一口流利粵語。他應讀者要求，在香港旅行時拍了段短片，紀錄講粵語時當地人驚嘆的反應 (見留言欄)。

Daniel 中文名字叫孔樂康，以其英文姓氏 Peacock (孔雀) 的孔為姓。他在短片中跟人說「我叫孔樂康」，那位香港女士馬上說「好叻呀你啲中文！」；在無印良品與收銀員對談時，對方讚他廣東話正宗，並問他是否在香港出生：「嘩好勁呀你，香港出世牙？」；在餐廳點半隻切雞時，侍應生用英文讚他：「Your Cantonese is very good!」

Daniel 在北愛長大，年少時是高爾夫球好手，被教導當地著名高爾夫球手麥萊爾 (Rory McIlroy，網球迷或會記得他曾與丹麥球手禾絲妮雅琪 (Caroline Wozniacki) 訂過婚) 的教練 Michael Bannon 選中加入球會。他那時夢想是代表國家出賽，然而 17 歲那年他收到教會信件，選中他到香港傳教。因而他選擇了成為摩爾門教傳教士，學習廣東話。後來在香港住了兩年，練得非常標準粵語。

在北愛用英文，當地人當然不會有如此興奮反應，可能見到亞洲人會講愛爾蘭蓋爾語 (Irish Gaelic)，他們才會驚訝。然而蓋爾語極為式微，當地只有 0.3% 人口主要使用蓋爾語，比 1.1% 的波蘭文更少，很多人應該都不會對答。北愛雖屬英國，但絕非香港移民熱門地。跟當地人談香港，總會談到前港督彭定康 1997 年卸任後擔任調查北愛警察事務委員會主席，大幅改革警隊，解決當地長年的天主教與新教徒衝突，讓雙方權力得以平衡。

看見孔樂康回到曾居兩年的東方土地，與十年前初來時有許多看得見與看不見的分別。今天的香港與那年的是截然不同的城市，不變的是這位北愛人對這種語言的感情。
