One day, Machakos KANU branch chairman Joseph Mulu Mutisya dropped by Professor Philip Mbithi’s office at Harambee House without appointment.

The professor, following Moi's mantra of not attending to anyone without prior appointment, declined to see him.

Later in the day, the President requested Prof Mbithi to be at State House the following morning to discuss an impending cabinet reshuffle which he was to discuss with the head of state.

At State House, the professor was kept waiting for an hour only to discover the person the President had been talking to and laughing with all through was Mulu Mutisya.

When Prof Mbitihi mentioned to the President that the Machakos politician had been to see him the previous day but he didn’t meet him as he had come without appointment the way Moi had ordered, the President replied:

'Professor, how can you ignore Mzee Mutisya?

He is the man who told me to give you the big job you have!'

Having finished drafting list of the cabinet reshuffle with the president to be announced the following day during the one o'clock news bulletin, Mbithi requested for a day off and headed to his rural home in Kimutwa.

The following day, the professor got to feel the full weight of the invisible powers that be when he tuned his radio at one o’clock to hear his name first in the list.

He had been demoted to be Kenya’s representative to the EAC headquarters in Arusha.

When he called the President on the usual direct line to enquire whether there had been a mix-up in the list, the phone was answered at some hair salon in Kenyatta Market. Those asking how now? The answer is ( Special branch manenos then )

THIS MAN HEZEKIAH OYUGI

One of the most prominent and powerful people Kamagambo has ever produced was a man called Hezekiah Oyugi. Oyugi rose through the ranks from DO,DC, PC and later to Internal Security PS in the Moi era. So powerful was Oyugi that when he called a PC in Kisumu from his Nairobi office, they would salute first before picking his call.

And this not an exegerration. Veteran Nation Media Group columnist Emman Omari recalls an interview he once had with the late Western Province PC John Lekolool. In the middle of their conversation, the phone rang. The PC picked up,listened to the person on the other end for a second, then stood at attention and saluted before continuing the call. The caller was the Big Man -PS Oyugi.

PS Oyugi was literally the third in command after President Moi and Nicholas Biwott. Full ministers used to wait in line to meet him -a mere PS- at his Harambee House office. In his village of Rawkwaro, almost very homestead has someone serving in the military. This is what happened.

In the early 90s, Rakwaro was known for cattle rustling. Boys used to drop out of school to engage in this activity. One morning, villagers woke to the sight of military trucks and personnel. Men between the ages of 18 and 27 were rounded up, bundled into these trucks, and taken to Lanet for military training at gunpoint. That is how powerful Oyugi was.

Oyugi built a wonderful home for his 3 wives and children. Rumor has it that each house in his compound had a private vault where money was kept in duffel bags. His wives and children regularly vacationed in Paris. Oyugi had it all.

But today, the sight you encounter when you pass by the Oyugi homestead on your way to Migori from Rakwaro (just opposite Dudu SDA church) is a pathetic one. Less than 20 years after his death, the home is overgrown with bushes and thickets. The once dazzling stately home that President Moi graced with his presence whenever duties of the state took him to South Nyanza is dottted with delapidated structures and caving roofs.

Whenever I pass by that home, I am reminded that nothing is as fickle and fleeting as wealth and power. I want to remind all of you about this. As you chase the two, and even as you get the two, remind yourself of how fleeting and fickle they are. You carry nothing to your grave

Appointing Francis Kimanzi to manage the national team is a very LAZY decision from FKF.

Kimanzi is expired. His career highlight was winning the KPL with Mathare United in 2008.

Since then, he has managed rich clubs (according to Kenyan football standards), like Sofapaka, Tusker and Wazito with nothing to show for it.

He was fired from Wazito in 2022 after two wins in 13 matches.

This guy has a UEFA A Licence but we only hear about him when there is an opportunity to coach the national team (this will be his 4th stint since 2008).

He has never put himself up for top jobs in Kenya, or even regionally. Kimanzi should help develop young coaches, not young players. His time on the touchline is done.
