My story segment

Meet Robert Nyaga, 46 year old man who survives by selling brooms in the city. The father of 4 has been doing this hawking since 2003 when he first came to the city in search of greener pastures.

His Love for selling brooms saw him work in different workstation such as Kajiado. Maili Tisa,Namanga, South B and now based in SouthLands Nairobi

Robert says in a day he earns about Ksh.4,000 from selling brooms as walks around the city and neighborhoods looking for customers. The lowest price ranges from Ksh.50 to Ksh. 100 only.

His normal day starts at 5am when he wakes up to make about 200 Makuti brooms that he will sell later in the day.

He urges the young people to work hard and stop being lazy. “Don’t depend on alcohol for survival and expect results. No that cannot happen.” Says Nyaga

His balancing act using his head to carry the brooms is his biggest center of attraction to customers who stop him and buy a broom from him.

Residents in are feeling the heat as the precious commodity has become scarce in Nairobi and its environs. Water has become the latest gold as it’s availability is forcing residents to walk to miles and pay prices out of the normal rates of Ksh.5.00. Prices now range from Ksh.20 to Ksh.30 per 20litres or jerrican.

TikTok discussions have been ongoing in Kenya.
A petitioner has called on Members of Parliament to ban the use of the popular social media application TikTok saying it is a contributor to the erosion of cultural and religious morals in society.

The Executive Officer of Bridget Connect Consultancy Bob Ndolo in a petition to the National Assembly that was presented on Tuesday, called on MPs to move with speed and ban the use of TikTok in the country. He claims the social media app Tik Tok is exposing young people to explicit sexual content.

A Kenyan youth's voice must be heard when it comes to inclusion on matters of devolution through skills enhancement. While issuing a presser to the media, under the banner of the Activista Movement, the youth-led representatives challenged the county government to create a friendly environment for youth to thrive.

This year's theme, " Green Skills for Youth towards a sustainable world" seeks to nurture youth skills and recognize their role in global progress and development.

Youths representing different informal settlements were also engaged in roundtable discussions on how youth voices can be included in high-profile meetings such as the upcoming devolution conference taking place next week.

The youths were also challenged to be champions of climate change and be the changemakers by networking and not waiting for politicians to come to give them handouts and continue promoting the dependency syndrome culture

"Enhancing the right of Children in the digital environment" was this year's Day of the African Child theme. However, panel discussions brought out some of the challenges children from informal settlements are still experiencing challenges when it comes to internet access to assist with assigned school work in-line with the CBC approach to learning. A child shared how hard it is for her mother to access data on her phone for research versus buying food for the family. On the other hand, stronger sentiments were raised by key academic stakeholders on ways children can also be safe online so as not to fall into cyberbullying cartels.

Parents must protect their kids from accessing harmful content online.

Kaitan Mbuya, Ubongo Kids Kenya's country manager, has challenged stakeholders on the need to produce content that stimulates a child's brain.

Speaking during a Content creators workshop organized by his organization, Kaitan noted that a child's brain is directly influenced by what they consume on television and other digital devices.

The one-day forum also focused on ways in which content creators can improve content targeting children in Kenya.

According to the Encyclopedia of early childhood development, it is important for any parent to critically evaluate technologies before purchasing and using them.

"Some commercially available technologies teach valuable content in a manner that conforms to best practices and is quite likely to aid early literacy" Notes the Encyclopedia.

On the other hand, Iman Lipumba, Ubongo's Director of Communication and Development shared handy tips to broadcasters on ways to monetize content targeting children

Lipumba insisted that the organization is ready to partner with like-minded content creators to help Africa's 500 million children learn and leverage their learning into a life-changing approach to their growth.

Ubongo has two sets of targets:

1. Edutainment for children that include Akili, and Me targeting children ages 3 to 6 years old.

2 Ubongo Kids targets children ages 7-14 years old through fun animated stories and catchy origin songs.
