The body of Marcus Nyaga, a 21-year-old Kirinyaga University student, has been recovered after he drowned in the Thiba River near Kutus Town in Gichugu constituency. According to Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira, local divers discovered Nyaga's body several meters from where he fell.
Nyaga, a second-year Bachelor of Education student, was swimming with a colleague on Sunday near Kutus Bridge when the tragic incident occurred. His friend raised the alarm, attracting locals who responded immediately, led by the area's assistant chief.
Samuel Mugane, a local resident, reported, "The incident occurred around 4 p.m. The student lived in nearby hostels and left his clothes intact at the scene."
Shocked students and relatives watched in disbelief as Nyaga's lifeless body was retrieved from the river and taken away in a police land cruiser. Nyaga hailed from Chuka, and his family had been camping by the river since last night, awaiting the recovery of his body.
This is the second drowning incident in two months. On May 16, 2024, a third-year building engineering student drowned in the same river, with his body being recovered over ten kilometers away in Ngumbatha village.
Nyaga's body has been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home to await a postmortem examination. "The body has been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home as we await the postmortem," said Gichugu police boss Johnson Wachira.

Residents of Kimaeti, Bungoma County, took to the streets to protest police inaction following the brutal murder of Changalwa Nabiswa, a night security guard, by suspected robbers targeting local shops. The incident, occurring just 50 meters from the Kimaeti Police Station, has sparked outrage among the community.
Angry residents stormed the Kimaeti Police Station, demanding the removal of officers they accused of neglecting their duties. They claimed the officers were more focused on arresting busaa (local brew) brewers than ensuring the safety of residents.
Robin Wanyonyi, a local resident, expressed frustration with the policeโs failure to address the communityโs security concerns, stating, "That is why we have taken the law into our hands to chase these officers away."
The residents vowed not to accept the officers back, calling for the deployment of new personnel who would be more responsive to their needs.
Elphas Okwachu, a boda boda rider, condemned the incident and demanded a speedy investigation, saying, "The security guard who was butchered is an innocent guy. He was only on his hustle to provide for his family. We are annoyed as residents with the security team at this market."
The protest led to the paralysis of activities along the Kanduyi-Malaba Highway for several hours. The body of the deceased was taken to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation, while the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a probe into the incident.
Area Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka condemned the murder and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

On Tuesday, July 16, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, the prime suspect in the Mukuru kwa Njenga murders, was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. The court granted investigators 30 days of custodial orders to complete their investigations.
The body of Roselyn Akoth Ogongo, one of the victims, was identified by her family at the Nairobi Funeral Home (City Mortuary). They also witnessed the autopsy process. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the family visited its Homicide offices on Tuesday to record their statements and identified Roselyn's handbag, which was recovered from the suspectโs house.
โIn her statement, a sister to the deceased noted that the last time she ever saw her slain sister, she stepped out of the house with the handbag,โ the DCI said. Additionally, the family of Imelda Judith Karenya, another victim, identified her identity card among the nine IDs found at the suspectโs house.
The DCI has also arrested two other suspects who are assisting in the ongoing investigation. Amos Momanyi Mogusu, found with Roselyn Akoth's mobile phone, and Moses Ogembo, who allegedly sold the handset to Mogusu, have been detained.
โUpon arrest of Amos Momanyi Mogusu at City Cabanas and recovery of the mobile phone yesterday, he led detectives to Ogemboโs house at Mukuru kwa Reuben, who was found with a total of 154 used mobile phones stashed in his house.โ
Ogembo has reportedly admitted to purchasing used phones from the prime suspect. The DCI expressed their commitment to delivering justice for the victims and extended gratitude to the families, friends, and public for sharing valuable information that has significantly aided the investigation.

Meru nurses have issued a 14-day strike notice to the Meru County government, citing the administration's failure to honor their agreement made in April 2024.
In a press statement released on Monday, the nurses recalled entering into a back-to-work formula in September 2023, with demands that were to be fulfilled by April 2024. The primary issue highlighted is the extremely poor working conditions, including understaffed hospitals where one nurse is responsible for at least 72 dispensaries, far exceeding WHO guidelines.
The nurses also expressed frustration over the 2024 budget, which did not allocate funds to hire the 500 new nurses and medical staff urgently needed in Meru County. They emphasized that meeting these staffing requirements is the minimum necessary to prevent them from striking.

In a surprising move, President William Ruto dismissed 21 Cabinet Secretaries and Attorney General Justin Muturi on a day that began with normal government activities.
On Thursday morning, the Kenya School of Government hosted half the cabinet hours before the unexpected announcement. At the inaugural National Development Implementation Committee meeting, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and former Attorney General Justin Muturi led discussions on improving service delivery to Kenyans.
Attendees included former Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale, Susan Nakhumicha, Njug'una Ndung'u, Ababu Namwamba, Simon Chelugui, Florence Bore, Zachary Njeru, and Penina Malonza, along with Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau. To their shock, all except Mudavadi were dismissed to pave the way for forming a broad-based government.
This event occurred just two days after a Cabinet Committee meeting chaired by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his official residence in Karen, aimed at accelerating the implementation of cabinet decisions.
Former Mining Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya was engaged in a meeting with the Kenya Chamber of Mines, discussing licensing and value addition in the mining sector. In Kilifi County, former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua led a beach cleanup initiative at Vidazini Beach, urging residents to maintain cleanliness to boost tourism.
A planned tour of the BRT Line 2 along Thika Super Highway by former Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was abruptly canceled hours before President Ruto's announcement.
These dismissals came exactly a week after a cabinet meeting held in the wake of two weeks of anti-government protests, which led the President to withdraw the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

In a horrifying incident on the night of Wednesday, July 10, 2024, in Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, a stepmother threw her seven-year-old stepson into Thiba River.
Faith Wanjiru, a Soweto village elder, reported that the suspect approached the Thiba River bridge, holding the boy's hand, before throwing him into the water and fleeing the scene. Witnesses across the road struggled to assist the boy, who was crying out for help.
John Kinyua, a witness, stated that the boy believed his stepmother was taking him to a local hotel for supper. The boyโs father, Dennis Musili, arrived promptly after being alerted by residents. He had left his son with his stepmother and given her money for supper. Musili, who married the stepmother two years ago after separating from his wife, expressed his confusion and distress, saying, โI wonder why she wanted to kill the boy by throwing him into river Thiba.โ
The boy, a Grade 2 student, was rescued and taken to a local private hospital, where he is now out of danger. Faith Wanjiru confirmed, โWe have taken the boy to a local private hospital and he is out of danger. I will take the boy to my house as I have no children while the police continue searching for the woman.โ
Authorities are actively searching for the stepmother to ensure she faces charges in court.

Raila Odinga Junior, the son of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, recently sparked controversy by expressing a different political opinion from his father on social media. This divergence has fueled a discussion on the recurring theme of generational disagreements within the Odinga family.
The disagreement emerged after Raila Odinga Senior expressed his readiness to engage in dialogue with President Ruto and his administration following the ascension of the IEBC amendment bill in 2024. In contrast, Raila Odinga Junior took to social media to emphasize individual perspectives, stating, "Everybody is an individual, please! Even people with the same names." His post quickly attracted significant attention, amassing over a million views within hours.
This isn't the first instance of such familial discord. Raila Odinga Senior himself famously disagreed with his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, on political matters. Notably, at age 46, Raila Senior interrupted the 1992 Ford Kenyaโs National Delegates Conference where his father was speaking, arriving with a group of unruly youth. This disagreement over party leadership processes eventually led Raila Senior to change political parties.
The online community has drawn parallels between these past events and the current situation. One user speculated, โAre you denouncing your dad like he did with his dad? This is history repeating itself.โ Former Kiambu Governor Kabogo also weighed in, commending Raila Junior for asserting his independence.
The Odinga family's legacy of political dissent and varied viewpoints continues to play a pivotal role in Kenyan politics, highlighting the intricate dynamics within political families and their broader implications for the nation's political landscape.

Rice farmers in the Mwea irrigation farms are facing significant challenges as rats threaten their rice production. Farmers from the Thiba section, led by John Munene and Pius Njogu, have expressed concerns that the rat infestation may severely impact their yields.
The farmers have resorted to local methods, such as lighting candles in the rice paddies at night, to scare away the invasive rodents. However, they are now calling for government intervention to find a sustainable solution to this menace that threatens their livelihood.
John Munene mentioned that rice farmers are already expecting a poor harvest due to an earlier invasion by snails. "It is the second year since rats invaded the scheme and over five years since snails invaded Mwea scheme. Who will now help Mwea farmers?" Munene asked.
Pius Njogu added that the rapid reproduction of the rats is causing sleepless nights for the rice farmers. "It is very cold and we are spending all our energies to fight rats. Who will help us?" Njogu paused.
The farmers are hoping for immediate assistance to tackle the rat problem and protect their crops from further damage.

A tragic accident involving a commuter train at KMQ, Kajiado, has left one person dead and 30 others seriously injured. The incident occurred at 9 am on Tuesday, July 9, when the Magadi-Kajiado train rolled backwards along a steep stretch.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by passengers' screams for help. They attributed the accident to rampant vandalism of the railway line and poor visibility due to heavy rains in the area. Residents have highlighted that the railway line has frequently been targeted by rogue scrap metal dealers, who evade check unit officers responsible for managing the railway.
The commuter train, operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi, is the only public transport available in the area, charging KSh70 for the 135-kilometer journey. Tata Chemicals Magadi also operates a cargo train transporting trona from Magadi to Kajiado town, before it is exported via Mombasa.
Following the accident, the injured passengers received initial treatment at the Mile 46 dispensary and were subsequently transferred to Kajiado Referral Hospital for specialized care. The body of the deceased, who has been positively identified, is being preserved at the hospital morgue.

Police in Bungoma have detained Levis Simiyu, a self-proclaimed preacher, after human body parts were discovered in his vehicle. The grim find was made by car wash attendants at Masikhu market in Bungoma's Webuye East.
According to police, the body parts were found stashed in a carton in the boot of Simiyu's car. An attendant cleaning the boot noticed a protruding human leg, which was partly burnt and resting atop other body parts. Startled by the discovery, the attendant abandoned his work and reported the incident to the petrol station manager.
The manager quickly contacted the police at Webuye station, who arrived on the scene before Simiyu could drive off. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the sequence of events and added that the body parts have been transported to Webuye Hospital morgue for further analysis.
Simiyu, who is said to be a pastor at a local church in Ndivisi, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

On Monday, July 8, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) detailed to a Shanzu court in Mombasa County how Paul Nthenge Mackenzie allegedly operated a โruthless and efficientโ criminal enterprise that resulted in the massacre of approximately 500 people in Shakahola Forest.
The prosecution described Mackenzie's group as a well-organized militia-like enterprise disguised as a church. The group conducted systematic massacres with an intricate governance system, communication networks, and security measures to enforce Mackenzieโs orders.
The prosecution plans to present 90 witnesses to depict the massacre's scale. Evidence includes real and documentary proof, electronic and digital evidence, cybercrime reports, and expert opinions on physical and emotional abuse.
Mackenzie and his deputy, Smart Deri Mwakalama, were identified as the main figures behind the murders of vulnerable women and children. Witnesses will describe how Mackenzie tightly controlled the groupโs activities, promoting an extremist belief system that justified the killings as a transcendent spiritual transition.
The prosecution may request the court to visit Shakahola Forest or adopt scientific reports reconstructing the crime scene to provide a comprehensive view of the events.
Mackenzie and 94 others face charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, radicalization, facilitating terrorist acts, and possessing materials related to terrorism. Between 2020 and 2023, they allegedly engaged in criminal activities that endangered lives and resulted in the deaths of 429 members of the Good News International Ministries. The accused promoted extreme fasting to death, facilitated the transportation of followers to Shakahola Forest, and possessed CDs, DVDs, books, and pamphlets used to instigate terrorist acts.
The prosecution team is led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Peter Kiprop and includes Senior Principal Prosecution Counsels Jami Yamina, Victor Owiti, and Anthony Musyoka, and Senior Prosecution Counsel Peris Ogega. They assert having solid evidence to convict Mackenzie and the other accused individuals.
The court session highlighted the prosecution's determination to hold those responsible for the Shakahola massacre accountable and emphasized the severity of the alleged crimes and the organized nature of Mackenzieโs operation.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has made significant progress in investigating the recent arson and looting incidents at Chieni Supermarkets in Nyeri and Nanyuki. In a statement released on July 4, 2024, the DCI announced the recovery of several stolen goods and the arrest of numerous suspects linked to the crimes.
Recovered items include washing machines, refrigerators, water dispensers, bicycles, kitchenware, food items, and clothing. The DCI provided details on the suspects and the stolen goods found in various locations in Nanyuki.
In one case, 24-year-old Chris Nduni Wamuhu was apprehended at a rental house in Nanyuki with a stolen Hisense fridge, Uken water dispenser, coffee cups, teaspoons, hotpot dishes, and Luminarc plates. Wamuhuโs image had been captured in widely circulated phone recordings, showing him stealing from the supermarket.
Another suspect, Moses Njuguna Gachwe, 30, was found in a house next to Kengeles club in Nanyuki with 22 pairs of khaki trousers, nine T-shirts, 24 underwear (boxers), and sandals, all stolen during the demonstrations. Charles Kaariri Mumbi, 35, was arrested in the outskirts of the town at Asian Quarters with a junior ride bike, while John Ndirangu Ndirirtu, 41, was found with six vacuum flasks, a shopping trolley, an LG fridge, and several Luminarc plates and cups.
The DCI emphasized that several other suspects have been arrested and more recoveries have been made. The investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals captured igniting the fires and making off with stolen goods.

Residents of Isebania town in Migori County are in mourning after a 17-year-old Form Four student from Isebania Secondary School, Antony Macharia, was fatally shot during anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Antony, who had ventured into town to purchase personal school supplies, was tragically caught in the crossfire. His mother, Miriam Patrick, shared that Antony was on a half-term break and was due to resume school the next day. She stressed that her son was not involved in the protest, describing him as an obedient and dedicated student.
The incident has fueled anger among the residents, who are demanding a swift investigation from the government.
In another incident on the same day, a middle-aged man from Rongo Sub-County also lost his life after being shot by the police during the demonstrations, adding to the public's growing concern over police actions during the protests.

An anti-Finance Bill protester, Stephen Mokogi Nyarenchi, has denied charges of unlawfully entering Parliament premises and stealing the ceremonial mace during the recent protests. Appearing before Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Monday, June 1, 2024, Nyarenchi pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on a Ksh 2,000 cash bail.
Meanwhile, in Eldoret, 15 protesters were arraigned over looting and property destruction during the 'Reject Finance Bill' demonstrations. The suspects appeared before Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, where police sought 21 days to detain them for further investigations.
Investigations officer Ekiru Kirimoni informed the court that the youths were being investigated for stealing, handling suspected stolen goods, and malicious damage to property. The case follows complaints from business owners, including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, about the looting and destruction of business premises during the protests.
In Nairobi, protesters overpowered police officers and stormed the Parliament last Tuesday, causing damage, eating from the canteen, and taking a sergeant-at-arms jacket, as captured in viral videos.
Speculation arose when a video surfaced showing a protester carrying what appeared to be the ceremonial mace, a beautifully adorned staff composed of wood, metal, or other elements. However, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula dismissed the claims, stating that the stolen item was merely a replica.
"Reports that the House mace had been carted away by the demonstrators are false; what was taken away was a dummy mace on display," Wetangula informed the House. "I want to assure members of the House that the mace is always highly secured."

The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to swiftly investigate those responsible for destroying property, storming Parliament, and looting shops under the guise of peaceful anti-Finance Bill protests.
DPP Renson Ingonga emphasized that while the Constitution grants Kenyans the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions to public authorities, these rights are not without limitations. โAny person involved in such assembly, demonstration and/or picketing must be peaceful and unarmed,โ Ingonga stated. โThe right does not extend to propaganda of war, incitement to violence, hate speech, or advocacy of hatred that constitutes ethnic incitement of others or incitement to cause harm.โ
Ingonga expressed regret over the loss of lives, destruction of public and private property, and other unlawful activities witnessed during the anti-Finance Bill protests, particularly on June 25, 2024, when protesters stormed Parliament, destroyed property, and set parts of it ablaze. Shops in Nairobi's CBD were also heavily looted that day.
Ingonga has instructed the DCI to forward the investigation files to his office for review and further directions. โThese crimes cannot continue unabated. Any individual found culpable will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,โ he insisted. He warned that any acts of violence leading to loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure, including Parliament, Judiciary, and National and County Government facilities, will be met with the full force of the law.
Despite President William Ruto's decision not to sign the controversial Finance Bill 2024 into law, young Kenyans (Gen Z) are determined to take to the streets starting today, July 2, to protest against poor governance and the deaths of their peers during previous demonstrations.

Over 1,500 residents in Kirinyaga County have benefited from free eye treatment and cataract surgeries during a medical camp held at Kimbimbi Sub-county Hospital. The three-day event, organized by the County Government of Kirinyaga, Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), and Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB), saw 36 people undergo cataract surgeries to remove clouding of the eye lens.
One patient, who had lived with cataracts in both eyes for five years, expressed relief after regaining clear vision. Patients were also provided with glasses, medication, and white canes at no cost.
County Executive Committee Member for Medical Services, Public Health, and Sanitation, George Karoki, highlighted the rise in eye ailments in the Mt. Kenya region, attributing it to the increase in non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. He emphasized the county's commitment to healthcare, noting that Governor Anne Waiguru has prioritized the establishment of an ultra-modern eye unit at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
โWe have invested in establishing a state-of-the-art eye clinic complete with staff, an ophthalmologist, and a fully equipped theatre for eye problems,โ Karoki stated. He urged residents to undergo regular eye checkups for early detection and treatment of eye conditions.
KSB Chief Executive Officer, Samson Waweru, praised the county's efforts to provide specialized eye treatment, which has reduced the need for residents to travel to Nairobi for care. Waweru highlighted that around 10 million Kenyans are at risk of blindness, with 85-90% of cases being treatable if detected early. He noted that uncorrected refractive errors, cataracts, trachoma, and lifestyle diseases are leading causes of blindness in the country.
REREC Board Director, Mark Nderitu, explained that while the primary mandate of REREC is rural electrification, their involvement in the medical camp is part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. REREC is running 322 electrification projects across nine counties in the Mt. Kenya region, aiming to electrify over 15,500 households. In Kirinyaga, REREC has 20 projects targeting 1,250 households.
Nderitu emphasized that expanding electricity connections will reduce the use of firewood and kerosene, which are linked to respiratory diseases, eye problems, and other health issues. He expressed gratitude to the Kirinyaga County Government for the partnership, saying, โWe are pleased with the massive turnout and the opportunity to impact the lives of the community.โ
Residents who benefited from the camp expressed their gratitude. Lydia Mugo, a 78-year-old from Murinduko, appreciated the free services, saying, โI have never seen a free eye medical camp offering surgeries. We are thankful to have these free services through the Kirinyaga County Government and REREC. I have been attended to and my eyes can now see clearly.โ
Stephen Njeru, a 70-year-old from Kanjo Sub-location, shared his relief after undergoing a free cataract surgery. โI had cataract issues and needed surgery and medication. I struggled for over 3 years and was told I needed Ksh. 70,000 for treatment. Yesterday, I came to this medical camp, had the surgery done for free and now, though the eye hasnโt healed completely, I have started seeing images more clearly than before. I can see well, and the problem is gone. I am grateful,โ Njeru stated.
