THE OASIS OF HOPE

Ebei Sylvester Koloi's journey from the harsh environment of the great village of Kanakurudio in Turkana County to Budapest, Hungary, is a testament to determination, resilience, and the pursuit of education.

Born and raised in Kanakurudio, a village where life was a daily struggle due to arid conditions, koloi faced numerous challenges from a young age. His family, like many others, depended on livestock herding for their livelihoods. Access to basic amenities, such as clean water and quality education, was limited. However, koloi was driven by a burning desire to change the course of his life and the lives of those in his community.

Koloi's educational journey began in Kanakurudio Primary School. Despite the odds, he excelled in his studies, showcasing remarkable dedication and intelligence. With the support of his parents and community members, he persevered through long walks to school, often under the unforgiving sun, and a lack of educational resources.

After completing his primary education, koloi continued to pursue his dreams. He secured a place at Lodwar High School, where his academic prowess continued to shine. His journey to high school was not without its challenges, but he remained steadfast in his commitment to education.

Upon graduating from Lodwar High School with flying colors, koloi earned a place in Kabianga University. This opportunity was a turning point in his life and a source of inspiration for the youth of Kanakurudio. Koloi pursued a degree in a field he was passionate about, working tirelessly to excel academically.

With his bachelor's degree in hand, Koloi's journey was far from over. His determination to further his education led him to pursue a master's degree in Budapest, Hungary. This international leap was a testament to his unwavering commitment to learning and personal growth.

The Turkwel Hydroelectric Power Station and Lake Turkana Wind Power stand nearby, yet other parts of the country enjoy power sourced from here. We, on the other hand, remain in darkness.

The County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) has ordered the County Assembly of Turkana to submit reconciliation statements for three bank accounts to the Office of the Auditor General for review.
Failure to present the documents, will leave the committee with no choice but to conclude that the money was stolen.

At a meeting with the County Assembly leadership, led by Speaker Christopher Nakuleu, CPAC further directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate financial dealings at the Assembly with a view to instituting criminal proceedings against the culprits.

“You must provide Ifmis reconciliation of the three bank accounts to the Auditor General within the 7 days,” directed Senator Moses Kajwang, who is also the chairman of the committee.

The Assembly operates and maintains four bank accounts which as at June 30, 2021 held deposits totaling Sh32 million.

However, the County Assembly did not present annexures to the financial statements for reconciliation which is contrary to the guidelines issued by Public Sector Accounting Standards Board.

Instead, the documents submitted by the leadership of the County Assembly for reconciliation shows that only Sh250 of the Sh32 million in the four bank accounts was reconciled in the Ifmis.

Similarly, the Assembly borrowed Sh73 from the Car Loan and Mortgage funds scheme. According to the Assembly, the borrowings were due to delay of exchequer releases that affected operations of the institution.

However, these borrowings were not returned owing to budget constraints. Most of the payments for DSA were done outside IFMIS since the funds were obtained from the Fund Account.

However, the Committee said the borrowing was illegal as the law ring fences the funds from such withdrawals.

Patience Cherotich was charged with Arson by ELDORET law courts.

Cherotich and his lover haven't been in good terms and when she visited her boyfriend's house, the man asked her to sleep on the sofa which the lady agreed. At around 4:00am , cherotich angrily knocked the bedroom door so that she could be accommodated.

The boyfriend opened went straight away to sleep on the sofa leaving cherotich in bedroom alone.

The lady says she had no otherwise isipokua kuchoma hiyo bedroom yenye inawakosanisha.

I HAVE LIVED IN A DICTATORSHIP BEFORE. I FEAR FOR MY COUNTRY.

1. Let me thank the leadership and members of the International Press Association of East Africa (IPAEA) for honoring our request to meet today and exchange views.

We meet at a time of great fluidity in Kenya and much of the region. From your incisive reporting, which we very much appreciate, it is clear you are in touch with the developments.

2. I am here to speak to you about the on-going tax protests in Kenya, which will continue. We will also talk about a problem we never anticipated; the unprecedented horrors of police brutality against protesters. With constitutional guarantee for protests, we never imagined that police would outlaw protests, confront protestors and kill so many as is the case now. We never expected the State-sponsored genocide that is taking place.

3. My intention therefore is to jumpstart a candid discussion about these developments, share our fears and perspectives and listen to yours too.

4. The most important discussion in our country today is the high taxes, rising cost of living and the ensuing protests.

5. Although the Tax Protest had been initiated by Azimio, it has since gone beyond the party. After the passage of the Finance Act, Kenyans have defied party, political and regional divides and united to resist punitive taxation and demand the lowering of the cost of basic commodities. That the tax burden is unbearable is no longer a party issue; it is a Kenyan issue.

6. The response by the State to the protests has given way to something that now looks even more ominous than the high cost of living that the protests were initially about. We are witnessing unprecedented police brutality. We are also witnessing an unprecedented phenomenon of the State resorting to armed militia to quell protests.

Cars leave clubs overloaded with more than 6 people inside and they will be dropping each other at their doorsteps for safety purposes but in church people leave one by one in their beautiful vehicles without lifting people going same direction.
