Spacing in BANANA FARMING

The spacing depends on the Soil fertility level, rainfall (water availability).
The following spacing is recommended under a five-year cycle on a fertile soil with adequate rainfall:

· Short variety (Dwarf Cavendish, Giant Cavendish) 2.5m × 3m.

· Medium variety (Valery, Williams) 3.0m × 4.0m.

· Tall variety (Lacatan, Poyo) 4.0m× 4.0m.
Planting Materials

Clean, healthy planting material consisting of side shoots, or pieces of corm with one to two eyes can be used

MAIZE POPULATION PER HECTARE
Whatever the case, the minimum plant population for maize is 36,000 plants per ha. A seed rate of about 25 kg/ha is required, but this depends on the seed size. 10 kg is enough to plant 1 acre and 5 kg for half an acre. Small seed will go further, and give equal germination and yield performance as large seed.

Here is what your crops are telling you.

HOW MUCH ONION SEEDS ARE ENOUGH FOR AN ACRE

An acre requires 1-1.5kg of onion seeds depending on the variety and the spacing. The spacing normally affects the size of the bulb onions.

Onions can be grown by direct seeding, which requires intensive management or one can decide to first establish a nursery bed.

Just like other vegetables planted on nursery bed, site selection is key to proper planning for production of healthy and vigorous growing seedlings.

The site should be in a secure environment, near a water source and preferably near the crop production site. It should be raised to a height of about 15cm to encourage drainage, 1m width for easy workability and the length of your own desire depending on the number of seeds to be sowed.

How to Install a Drip Irrigation System

Step 1: Connect Tubing to Water Source
Use an outdoor faucet or water valve to connect the water source to the main water line tubing. Connect the two with a backflow preventer valve to stop contaminated water from leaking back into the initial water source.
Note: In nearly all cases, an anti-siphon valve (a combination valve and backflow preventer) is recommended for most home irrigation systems. However, there are strict local codes to follow when using these valves. Check your local code for installation guidelines before you begin.

Step 2: Distribute Tubing Line and Connect Emitters
Once the water source is connected to the main water distribution line, it is time to lay the tubing in accordance with your garden layout.
Roll the tubing out around the garden beds, laying the line flush but not too taut. Once the tubing is in place, use a punch tool to make a hole in the tubing line wherever an emitter goes. In most cases, position your emitters so they are close to the root zone of each plant. To punch the holes, use boiling water or a hair dryer to heat the tube, which makes it more pliable.
Once you have the tubing laid out and your emitter holes punched, secure the tubing into the ground with tubing stakes (which should be the same size or just slightly larger than the tubing circumference).

Step 3: Test the System
Before you turn on the system and bask in the glory of all your hard work, you may want to make some adjustments. Before closing the tubing with clamps, leave all of the tube ends open to test the system. Turn on the water and allow it to run freely for a few minutes to flush out any dirt or debris. Once you see the system runs properly, close the tubing with an end cap.

13/01/2023

Maintaining adequate soil moisture content during the growing season is critical to nutrient use efficiency. Soils with moisture deficiency such as sandy soils show a low water-holding capacity and high evaporation. The goal of soil moisture management is to maximise the intake of rainwater into the soil and to maintain the soil moisture content at near field capacity as long as possible during the growing season.

To maintain soil water content following strategies are used:

Planting a cover crop to slow runoff
Mulching with crop residues or plastic sheets to slow runoff and reduce evaporation losses. It can also prevent crop drought stress during dry spells in the subhumid regions, especially during the early stage of crop growth.

Using no-tillage with a crop residue mulch on medium to coarse-textured soils improves rainwater infiltration and reduces evaporation.

Early sowing at the onset of the rainy season to optimise soil moisture use.

Adjusting planting density to optimize soil moisture use.

Relay cropping ad intercropping helps maximising water use by crops during the rainy season.

DROUGHT- pastoralists suffer big time
Livestock farmers in ASAL regions in kenya and the horn of Africa must adopt climate smart farming methods in order to realise better results of their farming ventures.

In the recent past, due to climate change, farmers have lost a huge percentage of their livestock to drought. In Marsabit county a total of more than 224,000 animals, including cattle, sheep and goats, succumb, according to a March 2022 KALRO survey.
MITIGATION MEASURES
1. Fodder growing and stocking is a sure way to ensure animals have enough feed during the dry seasons
2. Keeping manageable livestock levels also enables farmers to ensure a fruitful stock
3. Adopting new methods of livestock management such as FEEDLOTING ensures a well controlled livestock management situation

Did you know?

Kenya production of CABBAGES is the highest in Africa, with an annual average production of 0.86 Million MTs, which is also nearly 24% of Africa's Production

Behind Kenya is Egypt 🇪🇬 (0.49 Million MTs), Niger 🇳🇪 (0.43 Million MTs) and then Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (0.42 Million MTs)

At the global stage, Kenya ranks 11th; where China 🇨🇳 (34.5 Million MTs), India 🇮🇳 (9.1 Million MTs) and Russia 🇷🇺 (2.6 Million MTs) takes the top 3 slots globally.

Kenya yield (Tonnes/Hectare) is also doing well and ranks 26th globally with an estimate of 36,043 MTs/HA.

South Korea 🇰🇷 takes the lead on yield with an estimate of 68,512 MTs/HA

Further, a Kenyan on average consumes about 16 KGs of CABBAGES every year

January is knocking 😊
